ISP: RCN - I plan a few choice words with the idiots... [02-05-0-2009] Update: I whined loudly and no only did they drop me back down to the original rate (a tad lower actually) but they refunded three months of overcharges... Their billing systyem is weird. They charge full price, but then have to issue credits against it. Whatever, I'm mostly happy at this point. Some data slowdowns but might be this end. ISP charge/month: 72.95 up from 42.95 (FOR DATA ALONE????!?) UPDATE: Now back to $42/mo but I suspect for only 6 months this time around... I'll keep reminding them Comcast is right next door... Setup: Toshiba PCX2200 direct to Netgear 4 switch/WiFi access point. Auto-cable detect on WAN port so "po-man" cross-over re-assigned. No more ICS. Real HW FW. XP-FW disabled.
Next idea: hardwire antenna pigtail to access point, build a couple cantennas, and hit the web 1500' or so at the lakefront using a (likely Linux) laptop and planitarium app to stargaze (yeah, you can see about 10 in Chicago!)
Direct line of sight to my windows.
Prior idea, and will have to test ;-) hitting the local McDonalds and Starbuck's etc. hotspots within a couple blocks of here... heheh. Might lead to a new chapter in "intelligent pre-engineered mischief... ." nah ;)
UPDATE... Well unfortuneately, despite my hopes, these Netgear wireless routers cannot bridge and hence I cannot use it to hit other WiFi channels....
Although I have a MR814V2, which CAN be flashed with V3 firmware (contrary to what Netgear claims will nuke the world), AFAK, the V3 firmware only adds the missing encryption options in the V2 device. I have found no way to bridge networks despite forcing the router into an access point...
If ANYONE knows differently, please post a thread...
Location: Chicago - Edgewater @ the lakefront. Speed down/up: 10000/800
