Ok we have got to the bottom of the problem. Earlier today NAC lost
airconditioning in the data center for a while (!) and this cooked
the rack until the database server shutdown or hung up, (it also killed
a drive in at least one other machine we use).

Now I have to run database consistency checks before going back up
which take several hours..
