As the dubious installs roll on...
(old news - 09:51AM Thursday Nov 09 2006)
tags: software · spyware
Last week we mentioned that the FTC has decided to fine adware vendor Zango (180Solutions) $3 million for installing adware without user consent. Techdirt points out how, despite the fine, the company is not changing its ways, and new dubious install methods are popping up all the time. Vital Security has more detail.

hmmmm.....

The problem with the fines is that they are ridiculously low, and totally meaningless.....up it to say 25 or 30 mil and you will then start seeing some action, along with a strict cease and desist....which if ignored and then you really start escalating the fines....JMT

Re: hmmmm.....

Even that amount is too low for this scumbag spyware
purveyor - make the fine 10 times that and perhaps they
will clean up their act. Or then again maybe not.

And changing their name from 180 Solutions to Zango
does nothing to improve their image. You can't polish a
turd...

Easy way to eliminate spyware is to find the CEOs of these companies and riddle the car there in with bullets. But unfortunately that's not legal

What they should have done

They should be treating these guys the same way and with the same harsh methods they do with the Drug trade.

100% confiscation of all monies and assets involved in the crime.

I second that suggestion.

$3 million is just peanuts to them

180 solutions is without a doubt one of the worse spyware companies on the face of the earth. Back when I was tracking botnet networks many of the botnet owners bragged about how much money they were earning with 180 solutions and they did nothing about it. 180 claims they can't stop it but they can, you see what what 180 solutions doesn't tell you is most of its spyware is distributed through affiliates all of which are given unique tracking codes. If an affiliate is getting 30,000 installs per day with 0 visits to their affilite url shouldn't that be a big red flag that they are doing something illegal? 180 solutions has simply decided that they would turn their backs to this activity and pretend it doesnt exist in order to keep profits up.

But it doesn't stop there, it gets worse for website owners. The way 180 solutions/Zango make money is by having advertisers bid on domains where they want popups and visitors redirected. For example if you owned an auction site you could simply pay Zango/180 solutions to redirect everyone who goes to www.ebay.com to your crummy auction site instead. If eBay wanted their users/customers back it would have to go to zango and pay them more than what the current advertiser is paying just so they don't lose money. All this is just e-racketeering where both advertisers, consumers, and affiliates are getting screwed over in every sense of the word.

Everyone needs to write to their government so they do something to make this type of adware/spyware illegal and impose much more severe fines. $3 million is a joke considering 180 solutions made $54 just in 2004 alone. Now that they have tripled in size and revenue thats just 1 months worth of bandwidth to them.
