Philly, Boston and Dallas to follow Baltimore, Chicago and DC launches
(old news - 12:46PM Sunday Aug 31 2008)
tags: business · wireless · alternatives · bandwidth · Sprint Broadband Direct
Sprint execs are celebrating the fact that their oft-delayed plans for WiMax deployment are now ahead of the most recently-announced schedule. They had an internal infrastructure target date of having 1000 WiMax base stations on-air which has been met one month earlier than planned. The company has confirmed that the first-market launch in Baltimore is set to go ahead on schedule next month. Sprint had also announced 2008 Xohm launches for the Chicago and DC markets which are also on track. Additionally, it has now been announced that Boston, Philadelphia and Dallas/Ft. Worth will be next in line for deployment although a time frame for those cities was not stated.

Re: Exciting !

Can't wait for it to be live here in Miami. The School-Board of Miami-Dade County leased a whole bunch of spectrum to Clearwire a few months ago. Read about it here: www.wlrn.org/download/ITV_RFI.pdf

Unfortunately, Clearwire leasing of school spectrum is not technically WiMax. It actually uses a technology by NextNet that was acquired by Motorola.

The current Clearwire business model is the leasing of FCC allocated spectrum to school districts and while providing "free" internet to the schools, they in turn resell the bandwidth to subs.

Bell South tried this just prior to the ATT merger as a hedge against inroads Clearwire was making in the local DSL markets.

Clearwire's WiMax plans are pretty much dependent on Sprint/Xohm. When I had Clearwire, I asked them how soon they were going to upgrade everyone to WiMax, the answer I got was "as soon as they have enough money". That was 4 years ago.

Re: Exciting !

WiMax could be deployed on school spectrum, couldn't it?

Of course, there could be the issue of band incompatibility with the devices they're planning on releasing.

Delay allowed more market to be ready

The initial delay was due to backhaul supply and a need to ensure customer billing was ready. The delay allowed other markets to build up while dealing with those two issues.

Spirnt must provide EVDO/WiMAX combo cards

Sprint absolutely must provide EVDO/WiMAX combo cards to allow fallback to areas that do not have WiMAX, which will take many many years to hit equal coverage.

Re: Spirnt must provide EVDO/WiMAX combo cards

Would the existing EVDO cards be able to use Wimax with their WiFi capabilities?

Somehow I think they will drop the ball and they will come out the day before the bankruptcy filing.

Re: Spirnt must provide EVDO/WiMAX combo cards

The day they file that is the day MetroPCS, Revol Wireless, and Cricket all team up to buy Sprint and then merge into one.

That would be one big ass power house. And all I would have to say is look out VZ, AT$T, and T-M and anyone else that would stand in their way.

Lets Just Hope!

I really hope that Wimax does come with a Mixed EVDO mode because the whole purpose behind this technology is to have mobility and flexibility. So lets hope that Sprint does this one Right.

Re: Lets Just Hope!

There are no signs yet of EVDO/WiMAX combo cards yet. Would be a huge mistake. The Xohm group really needs to make this just as high as a priority.

They're coming...

that's all I can say.. but expect WiMax/EVDO cards, Wimax only cards (duh) and other nice toys. Complete different bill system structure / design, unique equipment and features, and of course when Intel starts shoving (or is it slamming) wimax chipsets ala centrino style.. then it will be intersting...

Providence, R.I. too

Sprint also says Providence will be on the list too. Likely in 2009.
