Xbox as U-Verse Set Top Now Requires Xbox Live Gold
Though AT&T Giving $60 Credit For First Year
by Karl Bode Friday 07-Oct-2011 tags: business · bandwidth · consumers · AT&T U-Verse
AT&T has been letting customers use the Xbox 360 as a fully fledged set top since since last year, and while the service requires you already have a traditional set top (minimum $7 a month) and pay $100 for a tech visit and an Xbox install kit, you didn't need to have an Xbox Live Gold account ($60 annually). That's about to change.

Giant Bomb notes that AT&T is sending notifications to AT&T U-Verse customers saying that users will need an Xbox Live subscription to continue using the service. The news isn't all bad, as AT&T is going to offer users a $60 service credit to offset the cost of the first year membership.

Earlier this week Comcast, AT&T and Verizon announced they'd be bringing a smattering of their content to Microsoft's Xbox 360 console, though the press releases (and the press) floated over the fact you needed both a cable and broadband subscription from Verizon and Comcast to access this content in addition to an Xbox Live Gold ($60 annually) subscription -- intentionally crippling the disruptive cord cutting potential of the service.

Giant Bomb did talk to Microsoft, who confirmed that there will be a very small amount of content available on the device that doesn't require you have broadband and TV service from the provider, and/or won't require a Gold subscription:

"Public service broadcasters, like BBC, and transaction-based applications, like Best Buy’s Cinemanow, will be available to all Xbox LIVE members," said a Microsoft spokesperson. "Other applications and services, such as HBOGO, Bravo and Dailymotion, will require an Xbox LIVE Gold membership. We’ll have more details to share about each of these experiences soon."

So uh, at least Xbox Live Silver members get to watch the BBC and get access to Best Buy's uninspired "me too" video service -- right?

I didn't know it could do that

Will this work as a second box, for people who want to watch different channels in different rooms?

Sounds like a nice thing for people who already subscribe to Live Gold.

Yes it will.

And the Xbox STB UI is much faster then the standard STB. The UI feels much more fluid and responsive.

I'm so sick of fees

This stinks for people who are looking to use XBoxes to avoid recurring fees. I play XBox games only occasionally and have no need for an XBL subscription. XBL Gold subscription is only a hair cheaper than the STB monthly rental fee.

I guess you get more out of it than the rental fee but it still bites just the same.

Re: I'm so sick of fees

I got my XBox Live Gold card for $35 on eBay as a daily deal. That's like $2.90/month. Cable boxes are typically $8-10. That said, I hate the XBox user interface. Too damn cartoony, I'd never use it as anything more then a game console.

I believe they are getting ready to release a new version of the interface, but I could be wrong on that.

Currently an HD STB(non DVR) is $10 a month from FiOS. XBL at $50(you can usually find it for at least $50 or much less even though retail it's $60)works out to under $4.20 a month. Almost a 60% savings from renting the HD STB.

Edit: I just relaized this was for Uverse but I guess the same arguement still applies. I would think the HD STB prices are similar.

Re: I'm so sick of fees

Must be in a non-comp area. Mine is $5.99 and the MR_DVD is free (normally $20). My whole bill is (3play) $116/mon w/ Prime and 25/25. TWC is hating life. Not ONE person on my block still has TWC. Even my Luddite neighbors caved last month.

I'm just about to do antenna or QAM and cut the cord w/ just local (we dont watch "paywall" TV), and run W7MC w/ xbox extenders. I picked up a couple of used Rokus to get netflix, amazon, etc for under the price of xbox gold. MSFT can stick it. I'm not paying them crap.

Verizon business (no CAPS -- when FIOS comes) is $74 for 25/25 and phone, so that seems safer. I would take uncapped internet over cable ANY day.

Some thoughts...

If you scourer the web you will find people that have a work around for the "required" $99 truck role.

Now if the xBox had a blu-ray in it, I would be all over this and put one on each of my other 4 TV's, but right now I will leave it at just the 2.

Also, for those that don't know or remember, if you have more than one Gold account it is worth getting the Family plan as it includes 5 accounts.

It's 4 accounts not 5.

Q: I have more than four people in my family. Is there an option to add more people to a Family Pack?

A: Currently, the Xbox LIVE Gold Family Pack will only include four Xbox LIVE Gold accounts, but we’re looking forward to the community’s feedback and it’s something we may evolve in the future.

takes too long to break even

By my calculations, it takes nearly 3 years before you start saving money by using your xbox instead of a $7 per month ATT Uverse box if you don't have an xbox live gold account. If you already have a gold account, then it's nearly two years before you save the cost of the ridiculously priced software and installation from ATT.

Electricity and heat?

So.... how's the wattage and heat addition to the house (not a bad thing in the winter) working out compared to a little set top box?

No thanks.. I wouldn't run my XBox all day long just to watch TV.

Re: Electricity and heat?

Well, seeing as how the latest Xbox 360s consume less than 135 watts of electricity during peak usage (Gears of War 3), I'd imagine it's even more efficient than energy-hogging STBs.

Re: Electricity and heat?

Think you need to read your own links...

According to the study, the most efficient DVRs tested came from AT&T, and drew about 18 watts when on and 12 watts while in a light sleep mode.

Re: Electricity and heat?

Do you not understand what "peak usage" means?

The majority of the Xbox 360's processing power would not be used by the U-verse application.

It would likely have comparable performance to a STB.

Ha...even the Xbox360 slim model wishes it could only pull 40-50 watts while idle at the dashboard, the same amount of wattage as a sloppy quad tuner dishnetwork receiver.

70 watts at idle is a lot more than 20 watts of a STB. And that's a dvr. The older xbox360 is over 100 watts when it is doing nothing.

So as I said before...no thanks on an Xbox as a STB replacement. I will use their box, cheaper all around. Less electricity usage, less heat, and they fix it for free when it dies.

Re: Electricity and heat?

Funny that energy is always at the peak of most dispute zits. The sun alone dumps enough solar energy DAILY to power the current worlds TOTAL kWh usage for the next ~4k years with minimal time and resources to harness. Such a shame we are throwing it away.
