Getting beefed up for E3 HD downloads
(old news - 05:00PM Tuesday May 02 2006)
tags: hardware · gaming · bandwidth
Microsoft's Xbox Live service is off-line today (supposed to be until 6pm) as the company upgrades the 360's distribution software, allowing the much requested ability to conduct broadband downloads in the dashboard background. The move is also beefing up the Xbox live infrastructure, as Microsoft prepares to offer E3 coverage in HD for download to 360 owners and XBox Live subscribers. Access to "gold" level content will be free during the duration of E3; during which game demos and trailers will be premiered.

news worthy?

I suppose this is news. Is this the 1st time since its inception that its been down? If not then its no biggy imo. I'm surprised it didn't happen sooner.

Re: news worthy?

Live has been down before but not since the 360. Not really news for normal people, but a good time for isps to create a xbox live free baseline.

Acceptable downtime...

For a company that has it's primary products built around multitasking this always seemd like a strange weakness for the 360 to have. Glad to see they are addressing it at last.

Re: Acceptable downtime...

This will be nice ... I hate having to sit there and wait for a download while i could be doing something else.

Re: Acceptable downtime...

I agree, this limitation has actually made me change my mind about downloading things many times. Great to see they'll finally be adding this feature, although IMO it should have been in there from the beginning.

Checking out all the E3 downloads will be interesting. The HD content in particular will be fun to look at.

Yeah but sometimes if you cancel & resume a DL it will jump to 50%

Re: Acceptable downtime...

That's a bug in the progress bar. It erroneously adds 50 to whatever number you had before (if it was less than 50%).

Just try it. Cancel a download when it's at 1%, and the next time the Dashboard will make it jump immediately to 51%.

I'm not sure MS has come out and stated that they were addressing this issue with this maintenance event. I do believe that this update will occur during the next couple of weeks.

Oh yeah that's true. Oh well, I'm not in a big rush, unlike the other people who are freaking out because of the 1 day down.

There was no upgrade made to the 360 dashboard. Only to Xbox.com so you can now send and receive messages from the website.
