Sleeps under silver plated mosquito net...
(old news - 05:55PM Wednesday Mar 21 2007)

Tipped by neosolace See Profile
There's been no solid scientific evidence that Wi-Fi is a health hazard, but that hasn't stopped a parade of people from trying to stop Wi-Fi deployment, usually based on absolutely no evidence of any kind. Teachers have sued schools to derail installs; angel guidance consultants have launched homeowner campaigns against Wi-Fi in their free time; some colleges have even banned Wi-Fi after equating it to "second hand smoke." Some claim they can immediately detect if such signals are present when they enter a room. One UK woman has a solution though: she painted her house with special black Wi-Fi blocking paint ($492 per can) and sleeps under a silver-plated mosquito net to fend off electromagnetic fields.

Re: tin foil hats FTW!

Actually, tin foil is the WORST thing you can use. The foil actually focuses the radiation on the brain. Far better to use a full faraday cage (copper is best) to protect yourself.

Re: tin foil hats FTW!

Maybe in its flat form. But when you take the flat tin foil and form a hat with it, its new shape allows for the deflection of all EMF including mind probes from aliens and major league baseball.

Well, yes, except for radiation emanating from directly below the hat. In other words, that guy who told you where to put your cellphone was trying to cause the cellphone radiation to be concentrated within your tinfoil hat....

Tin foil is almost impossible to find. Almost all foil is made from aluminum.

@mindspring.com

Using a cellphone and living next to one of those transmission towers are entirely different circumstances. People have developed cancer from living close to power lines, even though they haven't proved that the victims developed cancer at a higher rate than from the general population. But then, it took them 50 years to even admit cigaretes cause cancer. It'll be curious how many cell phone users develop brain tumors over the next 20 years.

Tin foil should be cut in strips equal to a 1/4 wavelength relation to the center frequency you are trying to reflect.

Well why are they only worried about Wi-Fi ?

People Are DUMB ASSES the amount of electromagnetic radiation from Wi-Fi should be the least of there worries when we have thins like say the sun, radios, phones, cell phones, tv, microwaves, radar, light bulbs, and any thing else that uses electricity. it all produces EM radiation. maybe the should find a big cave and go live there.

Stupid people should be shot.

Re: Well why are they only worried about Wi-Fi ?

If Angel Guidance Consultant Lady lives in Naperville (and she does) she's probably yapping away on that cell phone every day while she crawls along in her 9 MPG SUV on route 59.

This one, however, seems to be suffering more from a PR deficiency which she hopes to correct with this little adventure.

"her husband, a writer and environmental consultant"

Hmmm...wonder if he sells carbon paint and silver nets...

Painting the walls with an RF-absorbing paint is a start, but you have to also do the ceiling and floor. And what about those areas left covered in clothing? Does she develop a reaction there too or just to areas she's probably sunburned a hundred times.

Or better put by a commenter in the originally linked story:
said by Dunston, New York, NY USA :

She is doing exactly what her husband wants - drumming up clients for his consulting business. The human body is not sensitive enough to electromagnetic radiation at the levels and frequencies put out by Wi-Fi, cell phones, and microwaves to cause her symptoms. She either has allergies to something detectable or this is a huge scam.

Or she has talked herself into these symptoms. The human mind can be a very powerful tool. When a person seriously thinks that they have an illness, symptoms for that illness can manifest themselves (or seem to to that person). This woman is probably so completely convinced that she is allergic to WiFi symptoms that her body is manifesting symptoms.

I'm not usually one to reply to my own posts, but I just coincidentally came across a Wall Street Journal article that read:

said by »www.postgazette.com/pg/07033/758973-115.stm :

The power of the mind also shows up in conditions that involve the immune system. Exposing people to what they thought was poison ivy caused them to develop a real rash, a 1998 study found, and giving people what they thought was a caffeinated drink (but was decaf) raised their heart rates just as real caffeine does.
Now replace the fake Poison Ivy with the suspected presence of WiFi signals and the normal expected reaction one gets from Poison Ivy with an expectation of a similar reaction to WiFi signals and you could easily explain away this woman's reaction.

Of course, the best way to test this would be to have the woman enter a series of rooms. Each room would be contained within its own Faraday cage (to prevent outside radiation sources from spoiling the experiment). Some rooms would have WiFi enabled (via a normal WiFi router hidden from view) and some wouldn't. Neither the woman, nor any researchers she interacted with would know which rooms had WiFi and which wouldn't. She would be tracked through these rooms and would be both physically observed, would have vital signs (Blood pressure, heart rate, etc) taken while in the rooms, and would fill out a short survey about how she felt in each of the rooms as she was in it. When she was done, the data could be compiled. If any link between WiFi rooms and her physical reactions existed, it would show up in the data. Otherwise, other things cause her reactions.

I would not rule anything out yet. To most of the population Wifi could be harmless. But I bet its harmful to people that are sensitive.

She’s not a nut job. Just someone that is sensitive to EMF...

Docs should be looking for other causes

Autoimmune disease
Poisoning
Chemical irritation from soaps, makeup, etc
Psychosomatic mental illnesses

Next, they'll be looking to get cellphones banned in their community like banning smoking everywhere.

you do have a point here, although i thought this combination was ironic,
wife = a health spa manager
Husband= environmental consultant

the wife probably has access to who knows what for chemicals in soaps and what not at the health spa.

While Wi-Fi may in fact cause health issues, they are probably a much lower risk than being around people like this woman.

Lets blame WiFi!

I think this women's comments about Starbucks is extremely dumb:

Average Wifi - 35mW
Average Cell phone - 2,000mW
Average Microwave - 100,000mW

So yes, LETS ALL BLAME THE WIFI! ITS GOTTA BE THAT!

Average Wifi - 35mW (accross the house)
Average Cell phone - 2,000mW (against your freaking head)

Cellphones are 200-500mW... the most powerful cellphone I have seen was an old Analog "Bag-Phone" which was 1.5W (or 1,500mW)

And Microwaves, are not 100,000mw, but 1,000,000mW (1000W).. But then again, they are in metal boxes, with a "Faraday cage" like grill on the front

walk within 15 feet of an MRI and you will feel "odd" even with it powered down.

I can put my router on my head and not even notice it's there.

stand near a cellphone tower, and you get an odd feeling from it too.

point of all this, if they use a cellphone or ever go in for an MRI, they should be stopped to prevent an "alergic reaction" to the EM fields generated by the equipment.

And even if either one made people feel "odd", an MRI machine or a cell phone tower are orders of magnitude more powerful than a wireless network.

Only affects outer layer of skin?

Since EMF can go through her body, shouldn't she be completely cooked on the inside also? This isn't like poison ivy on your skin giving you a rash, these are waves that go completely through your body. She should be burnt from end to end.

Test her!

Should be fairly easy to figure out if she's "telling the truth". Setup 5-6 different rooms far from each other. Ensure that some have wifi signals present, others do not. Make sure there is no way to figure it out visually. See which rooms make her get an "allergic reaction" and which ones do not...

Of course, if she was just doing it for attention/money, she'd never agree. That too would prove she's BS'ing.

Err

I can sense Wi-fi in a small cubic area. Not in a large one, but a small one, like an apartment. Not "allergic" to it, I think that's impossible. But I am definitely sensitive to it. I run a G router in my home and use a wireless enabled laptop and I can definitely feel the difference when I'm not at home versus when I am. It's subtle but it's there.

Re: Err

I wouldn't call it an ability. I would call it a sensitivity to certain types of radiation. Incandescent light is the same way; if I walk into a room where incandescent light is being used, I can feel it; if the light is turned off, I feel it. It's been tested. Almost seems like I can feel the heat being generated from the bulb, though from across the room that seems unlikely.

LCD light, LEDs, flourescent, and "natural" light like sunlight is different, I don't feel a thing.
