| Verizon...Ha Why has Verizon not changed its public policy on the "unlimited" limited connection? Has this not gotten there attention or do they just not care? Probably the second, if they can still sell it to the naive, that will pay more for a "more" limited service, which they will. I will never give a company like this my money. I understand that a company must do what is best for itself but at what cost? They have decided to just lie to us (customers). Bad Form. | |

sprint upgraded most areas around here to rev A and i get 2-3mbit/s down and almost 1mbit up with higher burst. you can actually game off it.. ping is about 40ms.
yet sprint advertises:
450-800 Kbps down with peak rates up to 3.1 Mbps
300-400 Kbps up with peak rates up to 1.8 Mbps
everyone else is still years behind.. | |

| Interesting Results I keep seeing reports of how Sprint Wireless beats the competition, but in SW Florida, that's not necessarily the case. A friend who, is a Radio Engineer for a Broadcaster in the area, recently tested Sprint, Verizon, Cingular and Alltel. His stations wanted to test the feasibility of using wireless cell services for remote broadcasts. This guy is more anal than me (that's not necessarily a bad thing), and is very thorough in any task he undertakes. His results for the Fort Myers and Naples area showed that Verizon beat them all. I was surprised due to the reports I read here and other sites. I just thought I'd pass this info on and was curious if anyone else has compared the competition for themselves? | |

I can see why Cingular came last especially in Rural areas as the Service sucks (I can speak from personal experience having seen and used Cingular Nationwide from Miami, FL to Timbuktoo, MT).
Verizon needs to stop advertising "Unlimited" when it isn't.
If it wasn't for that fact Verizon should have beat Sprint by far.
Don't get me wrong, I am a Sprint user (Voice only) and it works pretty good for the price I am paying.
Given the choice though, I'd take Verizon for Wireless Broadband.
BTW, the reason Cingular has the fewest dropped calls is because you can't drop a call you can't make  | |

I had AT&T Wireless free2go prepaid analog service which worked quite well even in rural areas. After Cingular brought AT&T Wireless they replaced that service with their digital GO phone service.
Since I was an existing customer I was able to stay with the AT&T service until my phone died. So the new phone ended up with the Cingular prepaid Go service which was supposed to be the same but totally sucks.
It shows on the map that it is supposed to work in Orange County, NY but does not work anywhere north of Rockland county. | |

| . I use my sprint EVDO constantly. When I drive down to East Chicago in North Indiana, I stream TV or DVD's using ORB to my Sprint Samsung A-900 phone, and it's seemless streaming all the way, not once loosing connectino to the EVDO network! When teathered to my laptop, i believe the lowest EVDO speed I have tested was 500k/s, while driving on the highway around Racine County. Otherwise, I average about 750-800k/s using a roadrunner speed test.

I live in a somewhat similar situation...though there are no mountains in my area, and the population per square mile is 4 times as high.
Anyway, what kind of uploads and downloads do you get? What about latency?
If EVDO Rev. A really is deployed near nationwide, then rural people can FINALLY stop complaining (hopefully). | |

| Re: more coverage I only have a Rev0 card, but I get ~1mbps down and about 120kbps up. Latency is around 150ms. I'm about 3 miles away from two towers (NLOS). I have an external Wilson trucker antenna that gets me an EVDO signal of -65dBm.

I take it that there are no other options for you to get broadband, but EVDO and satellite?

| Rural Sprint I live in WV and the Sprint coverage is great, along major interstates and towns. I use voice+data (PPC-6700 PDA phone, AND old sanyo phone always tethered to laptop) We dont have EVDO here, but always 4-5 bars of 1x service. Every speed test I've ever done with 2 or more bars I get 140k up/down. Ping is a lil slow, but it does what I need when I need it. I have a Cingular Treo, and voice service totally sucks on it, and data through it is never more than 80-90k with 400+ ms pings. Hands Down sprint beats cingular. I've never made a call to a cingular customer that worked completely. Either thier phone never rings, or they dont have service (including friends that live in Larger cities (San Fran., Buffalo). | |

| Re: Rural Sprint I have the same sprint PPC phone and can't seem to get it to to work to provide internet connectivity using the usb cradle for my laptop. It's amazing on it's own for checking email - anywhere in the country it seems like since I travel for work. I may have had trouble in the south one time.
The download page at sprint has too many downloads, most of which don't really seem to be for that phone - merlin card, etc.

| Re: Rural Sprint The necessary files are on the CD that came with the phone. There is a folder called "OEM" on there that has 3 files in it. A driver for the phone, the dialer program, and a word file with instructions. I cant remember if the instructions say so or not, but you have to start the "Wireless Modem" program on the phone BEFORE you plug in into the laptop for it to be used as a modem. Start->Programs->Wireless modem (on the phone) If you need anymore assistance, PM me. | |

| Cingularly SSLLLLOOOOOOWWW!!! I've never used the other 2, but I currently have the unlimited data plan with Cingular for my pocket pc. I can not believe in this day and age how slow this crap is. I would guess it is about 1/4 the speed of dial-up at very best. I have no worries of hitting any invisible caps because I could leave that thing downloading 24/7 and doubt I coult hit a gig in a month. I've pretty much scaled down my use of it to checking some email accounts every 15min and the occasional lookup of a phone number or mapquest query. Not good for much else.

What do these companies have in common they use CDMA and use EVDO 1x/2x.. I'm curious I would like to here some sort of score card for each company for the amount the people pay on these companies..

| has anyone ever looked at a spectrum lease map? you will be surprised how little overlap there is. For this reason alone I don't know why people try to test Cell Co A v B v C in a given area, because typically the spectrum is all bought out by one of those companies. So no shit sherlock, you wont get good coverage by all three companies.
