Skype call works in tunnels with no problems

Passengers who ride the Heathrow Express between Heathrow Airport and Paddington Station in London are now able to access full Wi-Fi service. The service maintains speeds of approximately 2 Mbps even through several miles of tunnels using WiMax technology. Initial reports indicate that the quality of the service is high including when it is used to connect Skype callers via voice without a headset. The ride is only a short fifteen minutes but there about 15,000 people who take it each day so it’s an appreciated service and one which bodes well for both the future of WiMax and the future of public transit Wi-Fi.

.

Even though this is great for WiMAX, it's under a closed environment where frequencies outside cannot effect it much so it will work at it's peak performance.

Results on open city platform performance is yet to be seen, even though Sprint has shown that you can achieve 5mbps while traveling at 45mph down a city street with just 3 bars of service, actual customer reviews and having the network under normal traffic conditions affects the quality and strength of the signal and simply having one user connected on one station simply makes the lines more dedicated and have all device resources focus on that locked signal.

When the device needs to handle demand with several incoming and outgoing signals and still be able to handle the capacity given by it's clients then we can say, there has been a successful WiMAX real world test involved.

It's not just about the hardware and signal strength/quality in a real world environment, a lot more variables affect that.

WiMAX has only shown on this train that it can be used as a reliable backhaul solution, this does not include any info about mobile WiMAX which a different beast.

Again I wait patiently.

Re: .

Just think of the positive outlook if the test was run with LTE as the platform. People would be jumping up and down screaming yippie.

Re: .

The average joe does not care about the platform of delivery as long as he has reliable service where ever he goes.

It's us nutcases in here who care so badly what the platform will be.

Re: .

Yeah.. I know but I had to toss in some sarcasm. I'm not a verizon fan much less LTE. I'm rooting for the underdog (Wimax and Sprint/Clearwire).

Frequencies outside? The train is probably nosier than a CO.

More noisy sure, but not anywhere near the Ghz bands that it should operate.

Great Service

I've ridden the Heathrow Express several times. Great timely service to Paddington if not a bit pricey. The tunnels don't start until you get closer to London, but the ride is somewhat short for true surfing use.

I would think the buffeting of passing trains would distract you enough that it would cut into your attention span.
VoWiFi is used in many places in central London, so I could see where this may be popular with some locals.
