Keeps nosy network sniffers away
(old news - 10:08AM Saturday Jun 19 2004)
tags: wireless · security
British defense contractor BAE is pushing new "stealth wallpaper" to help prevent outsiders from accessing corporate wireless networks, but will let other radio and cell traffic through, notes Silicon.com (via Techdirt). The FSS (Frequency Selective Surface) consists of individual panels made up of layers of copper on Kapton polymer, the same construction process used in circuit boards. Companies can buy either passive panels - where the effect is always on - or active panels - where certain blocking aspects can be turned on or off.

Re: OR....

Well, you can try and try but even the best admin can have trouble securing a wireless network.

Enable WEP and someone can still listen and grab the key (or keys). Enable MAC filtering and someone can capture the valid ones and use those. Don't enable DHCP, that can be figured out too.

If you have some stuff to risk do not use wireless networks and guard your wired one.

BAE ?

Hope this works better than the latest thing we are working on that came from them.

But it is a good concept, and if it is truly frequency selective that would be good for many places.

Re: BAE ?

It'll probably impede phone at 2.4Ghz as well...

This is so stupid, nobody is going to use it, it'll do nothing, people will remain insecure.

Sheesh, use a directional antenna and adjust the power output for crying out loud...

Re: BAE ?

Actually, if it worked I could see my workplace maybe using it. Cells are banned for security reasons, so if it does kill them, so what?.

And Directional antennas are fine, but what about where the beam is pointed? and the side lobes? Mobile devices can not have a beam antenna, otherwise you can not have a truly mobile device what with fiddling around with the pointing instead of walking and working.

Why bother, when it's so much easier for some people to just get new wallpaper?

WEP is not bullet proof, and can be broken. The best way to secure a network from attack is to limit the access physically.

If they can't get a signal, then they can't break the WEP, spoof a MAC, or any other such nasties.

I've always wanted to paper my bay window ....

Of all the hairbrained products ...
Anyone with data worth going to these lengths wouldn't be on wireless anyway. And, dslknowitall, praytell what's wrong with properly implemented WEP? Am I to believe that someone's gonna (1)install an undetected keylogger on my laptop, (2)sit around on my front porch (again, undetected) until I happen to, (3)logon (and they happen to successfully trap it), and (4)ditto my MACaddy - then they spoof that on their system, and (5)they logon to my network as me without setting off any alarms (did I forget anything?), and finally (6): steal my astoundingly good concerts collection? The same bad porn they already have? And -no! no!nooo! NOT the credit card number!!
It would be much easier to knock on my door and request an FTP account for the music (granted to all comers for the price of a good beer - in a growler if you want the infringing stuff) and dig through my trash for the CC#.

Because WEP is always insecure. True it's better than nothing, but anyone can sniff a bunch of WEP traffic and figure out the key. WEP doesn't protect you frm a determined attacker.

Shit. I was *so* wrong & I stand corrected. Big apologies to dslknowitall: I bow down and grovel for your forgiveness. And thanks to Rhobite for the clue. I was totally foot-in-mouth with my snide (1)-(5) hypothetical of what's required to break-in ... especially on 802.11x APs that pre-date mid-2003 (like mine) which is when manufacturers began to ship better key handling. There are no shortage of googlable whitepapers on the topic, but this Rutgers HowTo is an easy read & decent intro & over here is a 2yr old paper but well writ & delves into details.
Again, my bad for believing the claims on my Nortel AP. The industry screwed up big time on the WEP key management and then again on loose keygen tolerances for WPA.

Edit: All of which still leaves this wallpaper product looking equally silly, but I learned a thing or two about wifi security.

Re: I've always wanted to paper my bay window ....

Hi,

There's not enough traffic on my WLAN to break through my WEP in less than 3, probably not even less than 12 months. The password changes more often than that I never do Internet downloads on my WiFi laptop, just as an occasional cordless surfing/email station.

WEP is not perfect -- but it's actually much safer than you think for home networks on modern access points (2003, 2004). However, if you run file sharing on a wireless computer (KaZaA, for example) then you're much unsafer, since there'll be lots more packets flying around. You need to continually monitor a network for a long time to crack the password, catching vast numbers of packets, in order to get enough information to crack the code.

Maybe in corporate espionage and stuff like that where a secret WEP cracking machine is hidden near a worksite for months... Or some kind of really high tech thief putting a hidden machine near a rich house. There's too many easier targets for them to go after. It's far easier to get your online banking password through many other means, to crack a WEP network.

Re: I've always wanted to paper my bay window ....

I agree. You have to pump a good deal of traffic through your AP in order to have your WEP broken by a passive attacker. But - a lot of people use their wireless connections a lot. I transfer files between my laptop and my desktop, frequently several GB at a time. That's easily enough for someone to break my WEP. Now the likelihood of someone sitting in my driveway sniffing my traffic is low, especially since there are about 25 unprotected APs within a block from me. But I still try to change the key sometimes. Unfortunately WPA won't work on my garbage Netgear card (WG511).

If that paper stopped cell phone signals...

I'd be all over it... First thing I would paper is the classrooms where I have classes. We can't have a single day go by with out a student interrupting the lecture for a call.

As for it blocking Wi-Fi... Considering most people want access in more than one room, how is it suppose to help ? The only way this could be useful is you only want wireless in ONE room (in which case, just run wires) and that room has NO windows...

Don't forget about the floor.

It's an interesting idea, but I don't see the market. The real paranoids aren't going to be using wireless in any case, and the less-paranoid aren't going to pay the price.

It will never work

Didn't the company think about windows, floors and ceilings. I don't think covering up your walls is going to help. I would recommend placing a big wire mesh around the building.

Re: It will never work

Sometimes you need to even make the existence of a wireless network, a complete secret.

You can still detect encrypted networks, because a computer scanner can detect WiFi-style noise on the 2.4 Ghz band. But if you want radio silence outside a building...

eh, the real revolutionary use for this. would be class rooms and movie theaters, and blocking ALL rf...no more fucking damned cellphones in the theater, yaaaaaay.

Is securing a Wi-Fi network really that difficult? Tried wallpapering lately? Securing the CIA is easier.
