Security in a paint can
(old news - 09:14AM Friday Dec 24 2004)
tags: wireless · security · Oddities
British defense contractor BAE recently unveiled "stealth wallpaper", to help prevent outsiders from accessing corporate wireless networks, but let other radio and cell traffic through. Now the Wireless Weblog notes there's wireless security paint, laced with copper and aluminum fibers to form an electromagnetic shield. Only available in flat gray from Force Field Wireless, it will shield WiFi, WiMax, and Bluetooth networks ranging from 100 MHz to 2.4 GHz.

Don't you just love technology?

Now instead of tin foil hats, we will see nuts with their heads painted flat gray.

Do they sell the paint in left-wall and right-wall versions?

gray man group

Look out blue man group!

I wonder how much this will be a gallon, because you won't be able to pick this up at your local home depot. I guess if we see alot of gray buildings go up we know whats going on.

You woul probably be able to maybeuse it as like a primer and paint something a little more appealing over the top

Sorry, it does not work that way :/ (well, there MAY be a bit of attenuation, but not blockage)

Never know, a lot of people do not understand the physics of radio waves. My wife did not understand why doubling coats would not provide protection at double the frequency.

5ghz (802.11a) have been on the market for years now. If the company has 802.11a they would be wise to stay away from this.

Re: Just 2.4 GHz?

I stand corrected, I had thought 11a was a security mode change. But then I prefer to go with cable if possible for security so I do not pay much attention to the 11x modes.

Cancer in a can!

Personally I'd rather have my WiFi signal leak out of my house than breathe in little bitty pieces of copper and aluminum.

False Advertising

to help prevent outsiders from accessing corporate wireless networks, but let other radio and cell traffic through....it will shield WiFi, WiMax, and Bluetooth networks ranging from 100 MHz to 2.4 GHz.
Actually it will prevent Cell Phone usage. If memory serves, most Cell Phones are either about 800MHz or 1.9GHz.
Also, it blocks half the commercial FM broadcast frequencies.
The only way Cell Phones would work would be with an in building repeater.

I was wondering about that too. There is no way a screen like that could be tuned to block 2.4GHz WiFi and not 1.9GHz PCS signals. Unless the real market is for businesses who WANT to block cellular/PCS (restaurants, theaters, etc.)

This makes me think. In a recent article here at BBR, »Churches installing cell phone jammers, people have debated about actually stopping cell phone signals by using jamming devices [which according to some posts in the article, is illegal] but while jamming the signals may be illegal, I don't think using something to block signals is.

Re: Expensive!

On TechTV Kevin used some and it went on like roof paint. The thing is you can get aluminum roof paint for about $2 a gallon so I would use that. Actually I mainly use wires and now they seem like a huge bargain.

Oh Great

We still have to deal with lead paint now we have paint laced with copper and aluminum too. Wouldn't it be cheaper to do 4 gillion bit encryption.

Wont Work!

Been there done that (in reverse)...

Two or three years ago I was working on a wave guide design which required me to build the guide of plastic and use paint to cover the plastic and create the wave guide. Went to the local boat store and bought bottom paint. This stuff weighs like five pounds per quart there is so much copper in it.

Guess what... didn't work. Who would have thought that the paint used on the bottoms of boats and which cost about $20.00 per quart, wouldn't form a fine wave guide when applied to the correct diameter of plastic pipe?

Didn't work and unless these dipsticks have done something magical, still doesn't work.

Re: Wont Work!

bottom paint isn't doped with copper to try to create a conductive layer, as far as i know, and so isn't quite the right product. what you wanted was completely connected (low resistance) layer of Cu that has no disconnected holes in it that were bigger than probably something like 1/4 the wavelength of the em wave you were guiding, and you probably wanted the whole thing grounded as well. i don't think boat paint would work for you.

the makeup of the shape of the particles is a big deal as far as resistance goes. i can't find any spec on the Cu particles in bottom paint, but the flakes of silver used in conductive silver epoxy are specifically ground (i think they're ground) that way to form a decent conductive film, even a reasonably thin one. the cheapest shapes of small particles of metal (probably what's in bottom paint) aren't the most conductive.

for this paint to work, it basically has to form a pretty well connected (conductively) MESH of copper, not a continuous layer, and the mesh has to have a statistically good chance of not having open sections that are big enought o let through the shielded (spec) waves.

could work. would have to test. rather than worry about the particle migrating over time, i'd seal it in with a top coat of something prettier.

Copper doped hull paint isn't using copper in the metallic form, but in a sulfite form. It's a biocide designed to keep barnacles and such from adhering to the hulls of boats.

nonsense

I don't think it will ever catch on. In any case, what about the windows? I realize a lot of buildings don't have a lot of windows, but most do. Come on, what are you doing to do about that? Not build windows in buildings anymore?

yes, and years from now someone will discover that children who are exposed to this paint have severe learning developmental problems, and you will be forced to sign disclosure/waiver when you buy/sell house that has been painted with this crap.

This sucks... really.

Stop the press! I seen this on TSS, and it actually did not work all that well - there was a drop in signal, but the signal still go trough. It did not actually work well enough that anyone should spend the money to buy it.

How about a wall jack and paint that acts like a Wi-Fi antenna to help extend distance?
