Make it wear Faraday cage diapers?
(old news - 01:06PM Friday Mar 10 2006)
tags: business · wireless · world · Oddities
In 2003, a group of Illinois parents sued their local school to stop them from installing Wi-Fi - citing health concerns and using rather specious scientific arguments. Last month we reported that one Canadian University banned Wi-Fi on campus, the College's president likening Wi-Fi to second hand-smoke.

Now Toronto's public health department wants to investigate potential health issues stemming from the city's plan to build a city-wide Wi-Fi network, according to the Toronto Star. Officials say they simply want to learn more about any potential risks such a system could pose.

For the record, not a single legitimate study has concluded that Wi-Fi or 3G poses any serious health risks. Health officials will realize this when they dig deeper, but some locals remain worried. "I do not want my daughter exposed to this unwanted health risk," one concerned parent writes in to the Star. "Why should we all become guinea pigs?"

"Cordless phones, garage door openers, baby monitors - there's a lot of stuff that has used this spectrum for a long time," says Dave Dobbin, president of project planners Toronto Hydro Telecom. "If something concrete comes along and says this is bad, we will take immediate action at that time."

Hydro Corporation is Toronto's largest municipal electrical utility, and the plan to wire the city would be the largest of its kind in Canada. Hydro purchased all of the city's light-poles last year for $60 million. The plan is to perch transmitters and receivers on every fourth of fifth lamp-post, and use a Wi-Fi mesh-networking solution.

Perhaps concerned individuals could force their children to roam the streets wearing mobile Faraday cages?

It's actually lead (Pb) that blocks Government Mind Control Rays. The European Government has found this out and they are trying to get rid of it with RoHS.

The tin whiskers problem is huge because the tiny whiskers just act as antennas for high frequency waves and amplify the government signals.
I'm surprised nobody has ever thought of this. I guess the government puts out mind control rays that tell you not to think about the tin whisker issue and you are basically screwed.

You know, I just read in either PM or PS that tin foil hats actually increase the chances or your brain being read. ;):D;) I can scan the article if you would like.

PM = Popular Mechanics
PS = Popular Science

But seriously, until there is hard evidence showing it causes harm, it's just a signal.

While I agree about some items, you have to admit that they cannot get away from radio transmissions, cell towers, or how about all the radio frequencies that they are being bombarded with from satellites.. I know the signals are low but they are still there.. So maybe we shoue get rid of them all..

What a bunch of total horse shia't. We have been living in a world of RF fields all of our lives. You have Hamradio operators who have been soaked in such EMF for nearly a 100 years, except for problems with RF induced fevers in the late 1920's there has been no problems. The only documented problem I am aware of with RF fields in the frequencies used by the devices mentioned here is USN sailors who worked on ship board radars in the 50's and 60's developing cataracts years after the fact this because the equipment of the time was not shielded that well and the power levels where thousands of time higher.

And early pioneers in Ham radio have had health issues arise just like the military you mention, which is why there is a standard for Maximum Permissible Exposure today and Hams have to acknowledge that they meet MPE limits at their operating site when they renew licenses. Many countries also have a version of MPE requirements. Heck, even the evil commies in the old USSR had one, on paper anyway. And in our RF lab we have shielding and rules to limit human exposure to RF because of empirical proof of RF damage. I have had several co-workers over the years diagnosed with tumours that were thought (not proven) to have come from RF exposure due to the location of the tumours and the normal environment they worked in.

Now as to the affect that many Wi-Fi emitters will have, that is still an unknown, but like the Ham Radio operators of the early 1900's we will find out one way or another.

Even if they did ban it in the schools, WiFI will probably also be transmitted from somewhere else nearby!

Honestly people should be more concerned about the pollution that their cars put out! I guess they enjoy that smell of exhaust. Must think its ok to breathe in!

Wow why didn't the Bells think of that long ago. "WiFi will cause your children brain damage!" That would be much more effective at eliminating competition in the wireless arena than anything else. Heck they could probably eliminate small WISP's with pretty little effort.

Aluminum foil hats for anyone?

What about cell phones and cell phone towers, CRT TVs, Cordless phones, garage door openers, baby monitors...

I understand that RF radiation can sometimes be an issue... but Wifi is a drop in the bucket. They should just re-paint their walls and ceilings in aluminum paint or have the exterior of the house insulated with aluminum foil... Even better make aluminum foil hats!

What a bunch of BS!

In the US alone i haven't heard of a case of WiFi Health risks at all, hell you go to a McDonald's and Wifi is installed as you munch on your burger! i think some canucks up there is taking the issue too far out of hand, don't get me wrong i am sure there could be some device that may be out of their respected spectrum and out of safe levels but that can't be based on that ALL RFI/EMI or other devices is the same. other wise, get rid of satellite's in space, cell phone towers, satellite's dishes, and cell phones and cordless phone and go back to the stone age!

There are a number of my (idiotic) fellow canucks who do want that. They believe they suffer healthwise from too much RF in the air, more specifically due to the RF generated by the cell phone towers. In Toronto, there are no very few, if no, dead spots where a signal cannot get to - plus these towers are littered all over apartment building roofs.
The point of their complaints is that not enough research has been done on this subject, and they are looking to push Health Canada into doing a thorough study.

But to be fair, just because no study has found any higher than normal cellular or DNA degradation due to higher than normal RF in the air does not mean it is not happening. If it is - tinfoil shielding just MAY be the way to go.

Re: What a bunch of BS!

I recently became an uncle and love my niece dearly. I was shocked to hear that 50% of all children born today will die of cancer... It's been argued that being exposed to more chemicals, at a higher concentration and earlier in life would contribute to this sad fact. These are concentrations judged "normal" or "acceptable" according to north-american laws and standards... Couldn't the recent increase in RF radiation (last 10 to 20 years) contribute to the demise of our health without us knowing it?

Recent medical developments having contributed to elongate life expectancy, could possibly have masked the effects of "modern" life on our life expectancy and health... Who knows really. Really!

Having said that, I still think banning Wifi is ridiculous. It's an insignificant drop in the bucket.

They have been using wireless devices for inventory, as well as electromagnetic anti-theft countermeasures, and not to mention the Laser Radiation emitted from the bar code scanners onto the cashier. How about those radar guns the cops use on the highway, or the ones the truck weighing stations use. What about the automated speed checkers mounted to street signs. Hooooaaaa!

(foghorn leghorn voice) "Now wait a minute!"

How do we know anything about long-term exposure (years vs. calculated lab hours)? Look at the EMF/RFI/EMI from those 'shroom' ac/dc bricks. My old CRT screen would wiggle near one. Or that every household computer and laptop needs these bricks. Are they shielded? no. Are their warning labels? no.
Are you absolutely sure that the population is 100% safe? There is speculation about sterility due to the proximity of the RF. And never walk in front of a microwave antenna...look at the pigeons lying around (seen these on a roof top once...scary)

We don't know. Do you?
For example, asbestos was the wonder product for insulation and fire protect. No one knew about until it caused lung cancer, mesothelioma, and asbestosis. Or the increase in leukemia to those in proximity to hi-tension wires.

And now we are finding that the actual innoculation drugs babies are given contain mercury, and might be the reason for autism.

And what about all the low-level radiation from cell towers, microwave transmitters, or even satellites (slow warming of the atmosphere), increase in amount of cellphones, and wifi equipment?

Seriously, you cannot ignore this. No one has done a study of the effects of ALL the low-level radiation at once.

"Does my hershey's kiss hat look crooked?"

Look, I'm no idiot. I know about the tissue tests (and how our mass of cells would need much exposure to damage...but not everyone is the same. And what is needed to trigger that rogue gene?)
Nor would I want to scare folks that the sky is falling (But damn the US government for censoring scientists for alarming the news when a close call is there), but I think that we have some companies that will push their products through to get money (think Drugs like Vioxx...). Capitalism is great, but at what price.

Irks me you damn folks that have concern. Canadian or not.

Bigger risks

I love it how these morons can pick and choose their danger de jour, yet they conveniently ignore the dangers we know are out there. Let's see...

1. Cigarette smoke: Not only is this dangerous for the people doing it, but second-hand smoke is dangerous for everyone.

2. Automobile exhaust: Cars, trucks, and other vehicles are some of the biggest polluters out there. It wouldn't be terribly hard to replace many of them with public transit. Not only would pollution be decreased, but we'd all be spending much less time stuck in traffic.

3. Industrial pollution: Factories churn out tons of industrial waste every year, stuff that we have to find somewhere to dispose of. Why aren't we requiring them to change their production methods so they make less of it?

4. Nuclear waste: This stuff will be around for thousands of years, it can kill or cause radiation poisoning. yet we keep making more and more of it.

5. Our diets: If you've seen the movie "Super Size Me", you'll know what I mean. If you haven't, go watch it. Our diets are often times terrible for our health, yet people are getting fatter and fatter.

I'd love to see how these folks would respond to this, assuming, of course, that they even have the mental capacity to comprehend it. If they could, and if they were being truthful, they'd probably say, "Yeah, but these problems are hard to solve, and solving them would mean I'd have to alter my lifestyle, and I don't want to do that. I'd rather find something that's easy to do, so I can pat myself on the back and feel like I accomplished something."

Re: Power levels

However with a cell phone you usually place it next to your head.
since the intensity drops at the square of the distance, 2-3 feet or more (more typical of wi-fi) makes a a big difference in the cumulative radiation you receive.
I don't favor adding wifi or other RF ANYWHERE due to the added RF, UNLESS wired is not possible/impractical.
but these parents would do better to take the kids cellphones away (or severely limit their use/on-time.) also taking the stereo out of the kids car, enforcing basic good driving rules, will probably save more lives than this will.

Last month we reported that one Canadian University banned Wi-Fi on campus, the College's president likening Wi-Fi to second hand-smoke.
