Acoustic Energy is preparing to release what they claim will be the world’s first Wi-Fi Internet radio. It will have the capability to access over 99% of the internet radio stations broadcast on-line from around the globe. The Wi-Fi radio will access internet radio stations through your broadband connection via Wi-Fi (802.11b or 802.11g) from virtually anywhere in your home. The device is expected to hit the streets in November and will retail for around £199 ($357 US).

I bet when the new iPod comes out it'll have WiFi which will in turn somehow tie it to iTunes and allow you to listen to their radio stations anywhere with WiFi or on your home wireless net .

Insane!

I could build a whole computer that does this with surround speakers for less! Why does this cost so much?

Because they will be the first company to make one, trying to rip people off.

In about a year these things will be like $19.99

No WPA security option???

With no option for WPA security, it opens open your wireless AP to the vulnerabilities in WEP security. Since it is a brand new product, why wasn't WPA an option?

Also, sounds like an overpriced product to me.

I used to use an original SliMP3 with a D-Link wireless bridge to listen to Shoutcast by simply putting http addresses in playlists. (I still have the SliMP3, but I moved and it's now on a wired connection. )

Definitely will be sold at Sharper Image and Brookstone; there's a definite niche for overpriced toys.

Too expensive and much too late

Acoustic Energy needs to go back to marketing school. There have already been two 'internet radio boom boxes' which came and went.

Plus, there's this: »www.rokulabs.com/products/soundbridge/ which is much much cooler, and already works with everything including iTunes.

Not to mention any computer.

I'll pass.

Exactly. There are far too many kinks that need to be worked out and other products that need to be explored. I run an internet radio station but I still wouldn't talk someone into buying one of those. I still think Sirus was a stupid idea. I can't tell you how many people have it and just play their FM tuner. All people need to do is play internet radio from their laptop/desktop and turn it up. There you have an internet radio boom box.

ehh...i allready got one.

I've been using my pocket pc as my internet radio for a year now. I use a pair of powered sony bookshelf speakers, and GSplayer has superb support for shoutcast and features a timer that will shut the ppc off after set amount of minutes. Dozing off to sleep to the best 80's station on earth has no equil. And its portable too, take your ppc around the house with the headphones on.

For $179 you can get a handheld unit that has 801.11g built in, does Internet Radio, FM reciever, MP3 player, and can record the data stream onto SD memory.

My Onkyo receiver already does this.

Except for the built in 801.11g, my Onkyo reciever already recieves Internet Radio and can stream from my computer. For Wi-Fi, I just have to plug an adapter into its ethernet port.
