Google now removing over 1.5 million URLs/wk from search DB

Google is now removing over 1.5 million URLs/wk from search DB due to DMCA takedown requests.
»torrentfreak.com/google-url-take···-120824/

During the week starting August 13, Google received takedown requests for 1,496,220 URLs, up 35% on the record set just two weeks earlier and a huge 1,137% increase over the 131,577 URL takedowns requested August 8 2011.

Google says that during the last four weeks it was asked by 1,825 copyright owners and 1,406 anti-piracy reporting organizations to remove 5,733,402 URLs across 32,545 domains, truly huge numbers which on recent trends look likely to increase.

At this rate people who used to use Google to find copyright protected music & movies of recent vintage to illegally download will be out of luck.

Uh, they will use a different search engine? Knowing how many false or marginal DCMA claims are filed, everyone else will have to as well. Google Fiber and Google Auto better catch on, because Search is dying.

Re: Google now removing over 1.5 million URLs/wk from search DB

I ask this not rhetorically but honestly since I would like to find alternatve search engines.

Which search engines exist that give decent results besides google or bing that are not powered by two companies? Only two I can think of is Baidu and Yandex. Baidu I don't think yet has an english language version. And Yandex is honestly not all that great.

One thing I have learned (from being around since BEFORE the damned internet), is not one thing popular connected to the internet can actually be expected to be worth anything to the internet past 5 years.

And I suppose that means Google and anything with the word Google in the description of whatever it is being referred to.

I have lost track of the number of supposed must have or must use options online. And that includes search engine/programs/services.

If Google is around this time next year fine, if Google rolls over and dies thus joining so many other that have done so, equally fine.

There WILL be a replacement, and that is likely the only real true fact of the internet.

I recall when everyone just had to have a web page, or an online journal, or a blog, or My Space. I am enjoying the crap out of Netflix and I don't mind Facebook, but I don't really expect them to remain long.

Either technology will make them fizzle, or something neater will arrive. It's just no one can know what it will be.

I actually never thought I would stop wanting a web page, now I couldn't really care. I didn't reeeeeally expect to have a spindle of blank discs ever last more than a year. And I sure never saw my wife agreeing to Netflix being so easy actually.

I like Google, but most of the time, I am just using it for lazy things like math to be honest. I don't reeeeeally need it as a means to steal. We usually already know where to find the 'stuff'. Too bad if you are a newb and don't.

Well this site has been around for well over 5 years, and it seems to be doing quite well! I joined back on September 25, 2000 . Last time I did the math, I'm coming up on my 13th year here. And, I know a lot of other people that have been members for at least 10.

There are LOTS of members here who feel this site is worth a lot to them, and I know that if this site did close, it would be missed.

I was primarily pointing to the concept of forums in a broad sense, and not to specific forum communities.

Still I am sure there are some that likely will reflect back on a time when this forum was 'a different sort of place'.

I have witnessed that with a number of forums that started out humble small and very friendly, but success makes most places grow, and size and magnitude makes it hard for staff to retain that personal touch.

Today when I come here, if one of my posts has been 'moderated' I generally am 'whatever' about it, as the comment means precious little to me, so I am not going to cry over it not surviving. I appreciate that they at least send a notice that it happened.
I have been on forums that just ditch comments in a fickle whimsical fashion no warning or reason or even that they did it. And you get left to wonder what happened.

But the whole concept of 'forums' has lost the shine it might have had from between 2000 and 2005.

Largely because today, programs like Facebook allow us to say what we want, and be seen by who we really actually care about, as well as others that might become interested. And we are not limited to just being on a forum.

Granted, I would not like being forced to replace this specific forum. The site owner provides a very good portal to a great many businesses. Without DSLReports, I'd be stuck on a phone to Teksavvy for long waits for virtually any troubles or input.

There is a flip side to your out of luck argument. Google will lose those users that did rely on their search engine for that. This is great news for other search engines. You have to remember that switching search engines isn't as hard as say... Switching providers.
This behavior is the sort of thing that will slowly benefit startups outside the US. So I guess it's a good thing google is now censoring the web if you are their competitor.

Apple vs Samsung patent battle jury reaches decision

The knockdown battle between Apple & Samsung(a stand-in for Google & Android) has come to a decision. The Jury reached a VERY quick verdict after a 3 week trial and the Judge and 2 antagonists are perusing the jury forms before the judge announces the results. The results are expected any minute.

»live.theverge.com/apple-samsung-···ct-live/

It looks bad for Samsung so far. Jury is ruling for Apple and against Samsung for patent infringement on most of Samsung's smartphones and tablets. Samsung was found to have WILLFULLY infringed. That may mean a big buck award against Samsung.

Yet to come is Samsung's claims against Apple and the summary of how much each party will owe the other.

A jury has found Samsung guilty of infringing at least some Apple patents in the mega-infringement trial between the two companies.

The jury’s verdict, which is now being read, finds Samsung guilty of most of the charges read thus far, which cover various utility patents. The jury also found Samsung guilty of violating various design patents held by Apple.

The jury has yet to announce its decision with regard to whether Samsung willfully violated Apple patents or on Samsung’s countersuit.

Apple winning big so far:
»gizmodo.com/5937762/samsung-vs-a···updating

Apple wins approx $1.05 billion against Samsung.
$1,051,855,000, to be exact.

Now on to Samsung claims against Apple.

So far Samsung is losing on every claim of infringement against Apple. Bad day for Samsung and Google and other users of Android.
Samsung gets ZERO($0) money in lawsuit.
Samsung lawyers may all need to commit Hara Kiri.

Just shows how stupid the legal system has become.

Now Apple will slap injunctions on importing of most Android products and then demand huge royalty payments like $50 a device.

Apple wins, everybody else, you and me included, loses.

Who needs competition.

But it looks like not all their devices were found to be infringing. So Sammy will do some redesigns to some of their handsets and move ahead better than before.

You are sticking your head in the sand if you think this decision means nothing. Sure Samsung can appeal, but in the 2 yrs before that can all play out, other makers of Android devices will have to make decisions on redesigning, making deals with Apple to pay royalties, etc. It will just further cement Apple's domination of the smartphone market for another couple years.

The fact that such a complicated trial ends in such a quick, lopsided victory is evidence itself in how well the system can be abused.

oh I don't know. She was equally nasty to both parties. But the Jury obviously loves Apple and the iPhone/iPad/iOS system. Looks like a home court jury in San Jose stuck it to the Korean company.

Now we get to see how much of the jury verdict & award is set aside by the judge as is often the case in big civil lawsuits. And then the inevitable appeals.

Such a quick decision. I'm sure there's a number of Apple Fans on the Jury. This is such a bad, BAD decision. The patents stand too despite obvious need for invalidation.

Also, Samsung is a Korean based company, although they are multi-national and world-wide.

Except maybe the USA.... soon.

CNet debates how bad this might be for Android.

»news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-57500···1_3-0-20

CNET looks at why the Android community should be a little more nervous after today's ruling.

While the monetary damages are significant, they pale in comparison to the precedent set by this jury that Apple's design patents are valid and worth protection, giving it license to go after any company with a similar looking product. That's bad news for any company building an Android smartphone or tablet.

"This is a big loss for Google," said Roger Entner, an analyst at Recon Analytics. "There were actually two parties being sued by Apple. Google just wasn't named."

So yes, the battle may range on for another few years. But thanks to this decision, public perception will be on Apple's side. The decision was so lopsided that it has to make all of the other Android partners a bit nervous. While an appeal is an option, it doesn't look good.

Even as the legal machinations roll on, Android players may indeed start lining up to strike licensing deals with Apple.

Do any of them want to subject themselves the kind of circus that Samsung has had to deal with? Samsung spent the last few weeks revealing all kinds of juicy details and pouring resources into a legal strategy that ultimately was fruitless.

Samsung is by far the strongest Android player, and had the resources to mount the best possible legal campaign. In addition, Google had been quietly providing its own support.

But if all of that wasn't enough, what chances does HTC or LG have if Apple were to begin looking elsewhere? HTC is already smarting from a loss with the ITC, and isn't relishing another legal clash against Apple.

With many Android users already paying a license fee to Microsoft, and now needing to pay an additional fee to Apple, Google's free operating system isn't as free as it used to be.

"Google distributes Android for free, but the IP licensing costs -- from Apple lawsuits and Microsoft's successful IP licensing business -- are getting quite expensive," said Avi Greengart, an analyst at Current Analysis.

In reality Google is in an excellent position. At WORST Google can start charging for licenses and could do it any day they wanted. Android is a proven platform with gazillions of loyal users and handset makers committed.

And where are handset makers going to go? They going to start all over and write their own harrrrrrr-e-ble OSes? No way. They would would eat it with a smile on their faces thankful for the billions they make in profit on the back of Google developers.

And maybe Google could take the dough and really accelerate R&D in the mobile handset space to come up with something really spectacular that will be totally obvious AFTER they do it.

With all of this said, the jury assigned royalties to products that didn't infringe, and Judy Koh threw out evidence that Samsung was wanting to make (And not just late evidence). If this doesn't scream 'mistrial' in appeals court I don't know what does.

Judge Lucy Koh worked on several apple cases(2002-2008) as their outside console/attorney, was given apple stock options, and still has many relationships with her former employer.. Her failure to recuse herself is a gross miscarriage of justice.

Re: Apple vs Samsung patent battle jury reaches decision

They needed to do that before trial. Now it has to be a legal error. She could have worn an Apple Genius shirt every day, but if no legal errors were made, Samsung goes nowhere. Appeals are still rooted in facts already presented, no new evidence can be heard. Legal errors, such as tossing evidence that shouldn't have been tossed must be a "clear" error. So they can't appeal based on her 6 years ago working for a firm that represented Apple but they could appeal based on her denying admission of certain evidence such as the prior art (2001 ASO) or the Sony CAD stuff. They can also appeal based on the award. Metatron mentioned that the jury awarded damages based on non-infringing products, I would think that portion of the award could be reduced through appeal. But I read that the error was caught by Koh and the damage award was reduced as a result, unless he is talking about a different error.

Far more likely, given Apple is still Samsung's largest customer by far, the appeal will be what Samsung uses to negotiate the damage award down. Samsung will agree to pay Apple less in exchange for dropping the appeal. In the meantime, Samsung will be well underway if not already finished with the workarounds. Neither company wants this to go on forever.

Ultimately the damages, even if enforced in full are only a small fraction of the profits Samsung has made based on the "infringing" designs.

Somebody and Samsung executive had a New Coke moment. If one is compete with one's competitors do not make a product look like your competitors. What gets to me is the sheer numb of product that were declared infringing on apples products. If it was one or two products ,it would sow some doubt in Apple case in my opinion.

The funny thing is that Apple claims Samsung stole its ideas... yet Apple itself was one of the biggest thieves in modern silicon valley history. They and many others stole as many ideas that where not nailed down as possible back in the late 1970s all through the 1980s back before people though to patent the color of an icon....

Good News

Good News: Apple wins patent war on Samsung. I owned Apple and Android devices. Both are similar in feel and operation but I quickly went back to iPhone.

The fact of the matter is patents are first come first serve and that Apple came out wit iPhone first. Several of my Facebook friends (that I've known since middle school nearly 16 years ago) are Apple Fanboys (like myself) and they are as happy that Apple won. I am happy too.

Can't wait for Karl Bode See Profile to report on this on Monday.

A little tech Nostalgia

I am 28 years old and I am too young to remember the Ma Bell/AT&T monopoly. I was born in October of 1983 and the phone company was broke up two months later in January of 1984. Some DSLR users remember the phone company before the breakup and I am wondering what the opinion of the phone company is before vs after the breakup. I am old enough to know how to use a payphone (which many kids today have never done) and I have used postage stamps (some kids today have never used a postage stamp) and I still keep a home phone (some younger generations are ditching their home phones). I grew up in a time when only wealthy people had home computers and we had WebTV when the Internet was new. I remember when the Super Nintendo was the king of gaming systems and Super Mario World was the hottest selling game. I have used a rotary phone (only because my grandma gave me an old phone from the Bell era). I remember paying per minute for long distance and 35 cent local calls on a payphone. Mom used to get the daily newspaper and I now read that same newspaper on my iPad as I moved away and they'd have to mail me physical copies. I remember when computer time in school was a reward for good behavior. I remember smoking and non-smoking sections in restaurants (which smoking is banned completely now, thankfully as I have respiratory problems). I remember when fast food tasted better and was served hot and a can of soda out of a vending machine was 55 cents (coins only) including bottle deposit (and the machines did not take paper cash or credit/debit cards). I remember listening to the radio and they played more music than commercials or DJ chatter. I remember laundromats where you could wash a load for $1.25 and dry the same load on one quarter. I remember Arcades before you could get the same games on your smartphone. I remember when a ride on a city bus was 50 cents full fare and you showed the driver your pass and transfers were ripped off a stack. I remember when bill changers had seperate slots for 1 and 5 dollar bills and you laid the bill in the tray and pushed it in. I remember playing Duck Hunt. I remember the VHS tapes and going to the library to borrow movies instead of downloading movies and the trips to the record store to buy CDs and cassette tapes (used cassettes up until 1995 and we got a cd player the same year). I remember getting our first cordless phone in 1996 and the answering machine had tapes. I remember when only doctors and lawyers had cell phones and they were voice only and the size of a brick or mounted in the car.

I am wondering what the average age range of the DSLR member base is and if they could add a little technology nostalgia to this thread.

My grandma who is 80 years old (who can barely operate a cell phone or computer) remembers not having a home phone as a child and 3 cent letters and penny postcards. She remembers 78 RPM records and getting into the movie theater for 11 cents and popcorn was 5 cents and soda was 6 cents (never mind $12 for soda and popcorn). Mom (56 years old) remembers keypunch and computers that were the size of a mobile home back in the '70s. She also remembers when calculators were $50 (in 1970's dollars) and the Betamax vs VHS not to mention pong. She remembers 8-tracks and LP records.

Lay juries should not be deciding patent cases. This will likely get altered on appeal and some of apples patents may get tossed due to cases like this »en.wikipedia.org/wiki/KSR_v._Teleflex

The patent system has become perverted from what it was originally intended to do. The trolls have been weeded out but now we have a few mega cos with thousands upon thousands of patents in their portfolio to scare little cos with. This was the whole reason google bought Motorola. See any handset maker start ups lately? just on design side not mfg.

I think samsung makes some apple components. wow that must be uncomfortable. Apple better make sure samsung does not put any gremlins in them. lol

I agree 12 people too stupid to not be able to get out of jury duty should not be deciding cases having to do with technology.

How did the Jury return a verdict so quickly?

Is TunnelBroker.net down?

Some of my web sites kept getting slower and slower this morning. I noticed the ones that were getting slow and not loading at all were the ones that were being routed over my IPv6 tunnel with tunnelbroker. I turned off IPv6 and now things are retrievable.

Oh and one more thing. I can't get to their web site at all this morning to verify my account.

Anyone else?

[Update]

Darn tunnel broker isn't down AT&T U-Verse has some type of DNS/capture issue going on. I just tested my OpenDNS entires and sometimes I get the message you are using OpenDNS other time the message that I am not.

If I go to TunnelBroker using my LTE network connect I am there. If I try with u-verse no reponse from the web site. I am really upset with AT&T.....

Gas prices will be going up - refinery fire in Venezuela

Looks like gas prices will be rising strongly this week as an explosion and massive fire has hit Venezuela's largest refinery. This will put a small dent in world gasoline supplies, especially in US. And even if supplies didn't change, the news about the fire will cause prices to rise anyway.

I bet zero loss in US supply, but a certain increase in prices since fuels speculators raise prices if somebody so much as farts in the elevator after lunch.

I don't think the USA currently gets any gasoline or oil from Venezuela.... (Chavez)

However, as you stated, speculation on World markets will drive prices up. It's a good thing the economy is so strong and people have lots of spending money to absorb this type of completely unnecessary expenses, or I'd start to worry.

Venezuela & Isaac causing jump in gasoline prices:
»investing.businessweek.com/resea···cker=VLO

With the threatening prospect of Tropical Storm Isaac turning into a hurricane and making landfall in the midst of one of the busiest refining hubs in the U.S., refining companies have begun closing their facilities in the U.S. Gulf Coast, shutting down at least 8% of the country's total fuel-production capacity.

The storm-induced refinery closures have already shut down 1.3 million barrels a day of fuel-production capacity, or 8% of total output, according to the U.S. Department of Energy.

The market will likely feel the effect of the resulting fuel-supply crunch for about a week, said Dominick Chirichella, analyst at Energy Management Institute.

Isaac is "certainly a refinery issue more than a crude-oil issue," Mr. Chirichella said.

Meanwhile, emergency crews were still fighting a fire at Venezuela's largest refinery, a 640,000-barrel-a-day plant in Amuay, after an explosion left at least 41 people dead. As of Monday's market close, worries of a regional capacity shortfall had sent Nymex gasoline prices to $3.17 per million British thermal units, up 7.7 cents from Friday's close. U.S. refiners, which export gasoline to Latin America, could see demand rise to make up for Venezuela's lost production.

Gas prices could go up $.25 in the next week.

The X vs Y company thing re patents of any sort actually

I don't like Apple, but then I don't like MS either. And Samsung is just a company really, and it isn't my company either.

Would my world crash and burn if Samsung rolled over and died? Nope.

My tablet is an Asus as is my laptop. I am happy with them, but I only bought them because they seemed to have the right parts I wanted. That and both of them are chocolate brown which I thought was cool.

I think the Apple vs Samsung case is just two greedy bastards fighting in a parking lot to be honest. They can call it whatever they want but fighting over rounded corners and shapes? Really, do they not have anything better to pick in their fight to see who gets my dollars?

If the market was Apple Apple and only Apple for a tablet I likely would not have one. 400 seemed insane and stupid when I got the one I have, so Apple asking for 600 at the time, well if my wife had said yes to me at the time, I'd have just assumed she said yes to everything and acted accordingly.

I used to think 'patent' meant something, but increasingly it seems patent is just another aspect of why society is full of crap. There is no right or wrong in these fights, just greedy swine and the lawyers that are getting rich fighting their battles for them.

Even the RIAA/MPAA slobs have a better justification for being in court.

Isaac - what fun

Just sitting here waiting with 5 dogs waiting for Isaac to pass through. Looks pretty nasty outside right now. Anyone else on here going through it?
