Backfeed! Well there you are, you naughty boy.

I was wondering where you were.

It's terribly dry here too. We really need some rain. The grass has turned brown, and our little garden isn't doing well between the heat, and lack of rain.

Did you get any of those 100 degree days? Man, it was brutal here. Thank God for air conditioning!

I hope you and the Mrs have a good weekend!

Thrust me, bunkers and silos are much overrated as places to live.
I spent 4 years as a Minuteman ICBM Launch crew commander living 90 feet underground for a couple of days a week. It was noisy and cramped quarters. You always hoped that the elevator wouldn't fail because that was a long climb up.

I am aware that it was a movie. I know it wasn't a comedy, but that is what it seemed to be to those of us who were in the business.

One of the funniest parts was the power opening blast door into the Launch Control Center, the only power involved in opening the real one was 1 person power. Even though the door weighed about 8 tons, it could be opened with relative ease by a crew member.

Re: 1st

The fictional world is riddled with inaccuracies & "artistic" license. Something I'm sure you know well.

It is amazing how well they can balance so much weight with so much precision that a single man can move a door of such mass...

This video was just the first thing that popped into my head reading the thread this morning. Everything else aside, it is an entertaining move & movie clip so it's posted in that spirit. I enjoyed this movie when I was younger & see it more as a tech thriller than an "anti military" work. There is a heavy dose of anti military in this movie, but I didn't see that when I first saw it as a child.

When this hit the big screen I was 10 years old and obsessed with computers & technology, growing up in the climatic days of the Cold War wondering if the Russians were going to get me when I was taking out the garbage in rural Pennsylvania. Childish, no doubt. Being a child & childish is kinda permitted IMHO.

If you were manning a missile silo when this movie came out (or any other time) I owe you & those you served with my gratitude. It's a tremendous amount of responsibility to shoulder, more than I ever have & I've had my share. I have a great deal of respect for your service.

Google can make a nice profit on 16GB Nexus 7 tablet

»allthingsd.com/20120711/googles-···atdtweet

eight gigabyte model of the Nexus 7, which sells for $199, costs $151.75 to build.

The higher-end 16GB model, which sells for $249, costs $159.25, the difference being the cost of the memory chips inside.

Some reviews of Nexus 7, with links to more detailed info:

Re: Google can make a nice profit on 16GB Nexus 7 tablet

I would really like to get a tablet.

I was thinking about the Nexus 7, but the lack of an SD card slot is a deal breaker for me.

Specs look pretty decent otherwise though.

Exactly.

Charge another 20 bucks for a device with a card slot and micro-usb port. These are features most people want.

I want an easy way to transfer files onto the device, not have to do it over a network. That is way too slow.

Nice review of file storage & sharing web sites; some free

A nice review of file storage & sharing web sites, some of which are free:

10 file-hosting services that can be used to distribute files to an audience via links or email. Four are dedicated to sending and hosting large files in a corporate context (MediaFire, RapidShare, ShareFile and YouSendIt), while the other six (Box, Dropbox, Google Drive, Minus, SkyDrive and SugarSync) are more general, personal-use file-storage services that have mass distribution as an adjunct feature.

There is extensive info on each of the services.

I use Google Drive & SkyDrive to share groups of photos taken at family events. It works well on both services and costs me nothing.

Not to mention that with slow upload speeds- and caps- backing up large amounts of data online just isn't practical for most people.

Facebook iPhone app is unstable

I am starting to get fed up with the Facebook iOS app for iPhone. It is very unstable and has way too many bugs. For example, I hit the comments on a post and the nearby friends page comes up.

When I first got an iPhone a few years ago, the app was stable and worked flawlessly. Now with several revamps including an iPad app, it is unstable.

I cannot believe that a multi-billion dollar company like Facebook would put out an app that ain't even worth two cents.

Get your Olympics apps for iOS & Android before games start

To use NBC Olympics apps(iOS & Android), you must be a subscriber to a cable, telco, or satellite TV provider that has MSNBC & CNBC in the tier you subscribe to.

Story:

The only downside is that you will need to be a subscriber to a service that includes MSBC and CNBC to use the two apps called The NBC Olympics App, and The NBC Olympics Live Extra App.

This Olympics will be the first that includes live streaming, social networking and other related content on a number of connected devices and shows that the TV networks are finally embracing online content rather than being afraid of it.

“The NBC Olympics “Live Extra” application, offering live video streams and full replays for all 302 events across all 32 sports!”, and, “Follow all the action with live updates on every event from London. Check out NBC Olympics news, results & schedules, TV & Online listings, medal counts, video, photos, and much more! Plus, you can follow your favorite athletes, teams and sports, and engage with other fans on various social media platforms.”

The mobile apps have been created by Adobe Systems Inc. who say that the software will give NBC data on how their viewers interact with the apps both the content and the advertising.

You can also just use your mobile browser without being a subscriber, but will not get the streaming video options.:

The mobile optimized website is available by entering www.nbcolympics.com into your device’s browser. You can also access the mobile website by entering m.nbcolympics.com, mobile.nbcolympics.com or wap.nbcolympics.com directly into your browser.

The link below also has links to download your iOS(iPhone & iPad separate) apps & Android apps. But the Android apps are apparently only for selected tablets and not smartphones. It won't install on my Nexus S.

Re: Get your Olympics apps for iOS & Android before games start

P.S.>> the Olympics start on July 27.

And I tried out the apps on my iPad and they are not working well yet for video. Maybe NBC isn't ready with the infrastructure yet. Videos stutter, pause, and then just stop altogether.

iOS NBC Olympic Apps are getting crucified in the app store with most users rating it 1 out of 5 and wishing they could go lower. Most blame Adobe as the cause of a messed up app.

Online Internet purchasers will soon pay sales taxes

Looks like the drive for states to get sales taxes collected on internet purchases is finally gained enough support to happen. Will that hurt online sales??

»online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142···752.html

governors, eager for new revenue to ease budget strains, are dropping their longtime opposition to imposing sales taxes on online purchases, a significant political shift that could soon bring an end to tax-free sales on the Internet.

Conservative governors, joining their Democratic counterparts, have been making deals with online retail giant Amazon.com to collect state sales taxes.

Mr. Christie called taxation of online sales "an important issue to all the nation's governors" and endorsed federal legislation giving all states taxing authority.

The move toward taxing online sales has broad implications. Online shopping will become more expensive for consumers. Brick-and-mortar retailers won't have the price disadvantage they now have compared with online sellers. Strapped states suddenly could be flush with $23 billion in new annual revenue, according to the National Conference of State Legislatures.

Seizing on the recent political shift, Sen. Lamar Alexander, a Tennessee Republican, and co-sponsors from both parties are attempting to speed up action on a bill they wrote to give states authority to compel online companies to collect sales taxes.

One of the co-sponsors, Sen. Dick Durbin (D., Ill.,) said, "It gets down to a basic issue…of simple fairness for small businesses that create jobs and opportunities all across America. And with the sales taxes they collect, they provide for local police and firemen, for the sewers and streets."

"The handwriting is on the wall that states will collect sales taxes on online purchases," Mr. Alexander said. "This is going to happen—if not this year, then definitely by next year.
"

Well, there goes another $23 billion/yr out of consumers pockets in to government coffers.

Brick

Looking to build a whitish brick home. Does anyone know whether colored brick is, eg white all the way through or is only the outside of brick colored and then once it's chipped, you end up with a multi-colored house?
