The model you refer to doesn't seem too good. IMHO Stay away from anything Toshiba, Acer, Gateway, EMachine, and cheaper Lenovo. They are all made by Acer anyway AFAIK and they stick their own plastic bits on them. Kinda like Saturn selling Chevys and Saabs like they made them. Stay very far away from HP/Compaq DV series esp. with AMD CPUs. They are like Bic lighters. Flick them until they stop working then throw them out. They burn themselves up very quickly.

1 edit | Bleh I am praying that I get the helpdesk job at the bank I work at (contract to hire position) for past 4 months. I'll find out next friday. It sucks that they have to do a credit check since it's at a bank. Trying to not think about it too much since I was able to rent an apartment anyway with my not so perfect credit score. Already have written proof that I have paid off most of my debt which prob won't show on my credit report.
Also finally moving out for first time also so it's going to be an exciting month. Found a nice place. Just live in peace by myself Other than that, going to attend my sisters graduation today. Boy I remember when I graduated. What a mess I was. I thought it was going to be easy getting into the job market. Definitely was not. High school sucked anyway lol so don't want to go to the stupid graduation where they spend hours and hours giving hopeful speeches during this messed up economy for our future tax payers who will take care of us when we are retired. -- The Internet is about to go down....it is actually.

| Re: Bleh Yea actually I found a nice place that's $795 a month. Paid utilities (gas, power, and water). No parking spot yet but hopefully soon. Nice big living room, small kichen area with closet and small storage room. The bathroom is nice and big perfect for just myself. Laundry room downstairs (coins are needed). I am about to pay the remainer of the deposit tuesday and first month rent AND moving in on 30th of this month (the tuesday following).
So yea, my friends are going to help me out and prob buy me a frig as a present. I found some nice furniture stores that I'll take a look at but first two things that I will need to do when I get there is 1) Have a frig, 2) Internet access LOL and prob 3) buy some cleaning tools to get the place spotless (it's already real clean but I want to make sure I don't get sick). The cool thing is that the apartment is really close to my friends house and the gym which I go to 4 days a week. -- The Internet is about to go down....it is actually.

| Whatever happened to calling/writing back?
So over the last month I've been hunting for an apartment, as my current lease expires at the end of this month and my roommate is moving out-of-state. I've been in contact with a few people, but out of the seven people I contacted by phone or Email:
- Three never got back to me in any way, shape or form - One wrote back to me today (three weeks after I sent the inquiring Email) - One promised to call me on a Friday to set up a meeting to see the place, forgot, contacted me the following Sunday to promise to call me again this Friday, and forgot again - One went so far as to show me the apartment, but when I got back to him to tell him I was no longer interested, he told me he'd already rented the apartment out to someone else - One took the time to stay in contact, letting me know that my current landlord wasn't being responsive with a reference, and keeping me abreast of what was going on
I'm going tomorrow to sign a lease with this last guy. Not just because I like the apartment and the rent amount, but because I appreciate someone who actually values the time of people who are looking to give him or her money.
Why do so many people fail to follow through, especially on something so critical as a place to live? Errggghhh. -- Hexadecimal humor really turns me 0FF.

| Re: Whatever happened to calling/writing back? I went back to college last fall and had to move from Pittsburgh PA to Erie. I am convinced that many landlords are dumb.
I had gone up to look at apartments and not finding anything that wasn't an absolute dump I found a nice apartment that had been listed in the paper for 3 weeks. Called the lady and after talking for a while she says she can't show me the apartment because there was a waiting list and she had to show it to someone else first and would call me if the other person didn't want it after they saw it. I told her that's fine but asked if I could still see it since I was in the area and that way I don't have to make another trip if the other lady doesn't take it.... she says "but there's a waiting list?"...to even see the apartment.
I get home call a guy, seems pretty nice, set up an appointment to show me an apartment the next week. I get up that morning to drive up, give him a call to confirm that it's still good, he says yes and I leave. 2 hours later I show up and the guy isn't there, after waiting a half hour I call and he says "yeah, I rented it out this morning" ....
So I call the other lady with the waiting list back cause her apartment is still in the paper. She says the other lady was too busy to see the apartment so I still have to wait. I tell her, "look, if you show me the apartment and I like it I will pay you six months rent today and another six months when I sign the lease". She says, but I can't show you the apartment until the other woman sees it.
I swear to you, IQ of 3, what landlord not only turns down a year of rent in advance for someone who isn't even in a hurry to see the apartment, but refuses to show the apartment.
Incidentally, she called me in October, 2 months later, to set up an appointment to see the apartment and seemed a little miffed that I wasn't still looking. -- Come let us reason together.

If I was the landlord and it became clear to me that the other lady wasn't in much of a hurry to rent the place I would think that that is grounds for skipping her in the waiting list. -- Come let us reason together.

| New Computer I got my new Dell computer delivered at work today before I split. Stoked. I brought it home, set it up, and am loving it. I was going to blow away Vista, but I think I'll keep it.

However, downgrading a new system to XP can be a serious investment in time. If the manufacturer doesn't have the drivers available (usually the case) or if someone hasn't already pioneered a driver pack for it yet (more often than not) then I/You get to blaze that trail.
Eight to twelve hours is what most of these new downgrades take, after patching and app loading. Two-thirds of that is driver ascertaining and locating (also for mini-apps to run specific hardware functions). It'd take a lot longer without Everest Ultimate. I should point out that when I'm done, it's exactly as if it came from the factory, minus the subsidized crapware.
All this assumes it's not a *nix you're looking at. In that case there are a few really strong contenders in driver ability; the first being Fedora 11. I have the beta on a thumb drive and it loads in nearly everything I try it on, with little-to-no additional effort.

I have been on Vista since yesterday and I'm surprised that I'm already comfortable. There are those GUI issues that annoy most peeps, but I'm getting over them. Some tasks in Vista seem kind of sluggish, but maybe I am expecting too much. I do have a performace index whatever of 5.9 though. Cha ching.
What I ended up doing was virtualizing my XP box with the VMWare Standalone Converter. I'm running that VMWare image in the VMWare player in a seamless window on my second monitor. Very convenient.

I've been using it on my work computer since the beta, and it's like Vista but better in every way. | I just saw comcast's fios install ad.... I think vz should sue comcast for 400 million dollars & the lost time explaining the install process to confused customers.
Really comcast? "Resist FIOS"? Is that the best you can do? As a customer of both comcast & vz i can say that i'm shamed to have comcast's slimy wires in my house. Will be jumping on the fiber tv boat asap. will save money since we all ready have internet & phone with them.
If anyone is wondering why i'm disturbed by this ad...
Basically it shows an excavator digging up a yard with a huge deep trench & pulling up a water pipe & it spraying all over, then the house being damaged & the ONT falling off leaving just a huge mess of black wires on the outside of the house & the salesperson being creepily pushy ending with a "resist fios" banner.
My install took 3 hours TOTAL & left the yard utterly intact no visible difference at all, nothing was dug up or damaged. The crew running the equipment was courteous, polite, friendly, and the guy who set up the wiring and the router and ONT was a total gentleman, a former line worker for bell atlantic with 35 years under his belt. Explained everything perfectly, made no mess, damaged nothing, did a really good job and years later, no issues at all.
I am going to be calling comcast in the morning to complain. Messing up billing is one thing, but blatantly deceiving people about what to expect from a competitor is first & foremost illegal, and it's also just pathetic.
By the way my girlfriend got me a new camera for our 2 year anniversary since my old one was stolen. It rocks, i love it.
Also i still love my iPhone 3G. Awaiting the first regular bill which should be posted today. I'm guessing 140. I can only wait & see.

So, i guess we'll be getting new boxes and remotes. No one whom i am paying for something hangs up on me twice and keeps my business. A shame they couldn't just apologize and offer some kind of concession. Oh well.
I wonder if i'll have to put the fios router in my room, since it needs to be near a converter box. I am not sure if they will have to move the cat5 jack or simply run a cable or what. Whatever the case, i welcome the change to proper quality tv. Will keep all posted on the weekend threads.
