ZoneAlarm

Well, I have installed today SP3 and my ZoneAlarm doesn't let me use the Internet anymore. I went for now with Microsoft built-in firewall and disabled ZA.

Now what?

Iowa town adds Wi-FI service to municipal utility bill

Can't get subscribers to switch from DSL? Hell, just make them pay whether they want it or not.

Gotta love gov't. They just think we have bottomless pockets from which to steal.

Re: Iowa town adds Wi-FI service to municipal utility bill

Well, do you know if the town even has DSL (or cable) available?

On the other hand, are they now going to have people who don't have computers paying for wireless internet?

Re: Iowa town adds Wi-FI service to municipal utility bill

According to the article yes, DSL is available in at least part of the town but from what I'm understanding from the article is that they're charging everyone (the article says "Tabor residents") for Wi-Fi via their sewer bill. This is my assumption based on a description of the service (that it's a roaming service).

Unless I'm reading this wrong. Perhaps they're only billing wireless customers and doing it via the regular utility (eg sewer) bill instead of a separate bill. If that's the case, then great. But the way it's described is that it's a roaming service so how would they control access to only paying customers unless they had a portal which would complicate use by residents (eg for game consoles, DVRs or any other device without a browser).

If all goes as planned, Tabor residents will pay for their web surfing service on a municipal utility bill, as with water or sewer service.

Microsoft update kills ZoneAlarm

So *that's* what happened!

I got a call last night from my in-laws about how their computer wouldn't get online after my father-in-law updated Firefox. It turned out that ZoneAlarm was set to High. When I set it to Medium, all was well.

However, as I was heading to my in-laws' house, I got a call from my wife's grandmother saying that her computer wouldn't connect. This seemed trickier as ZoneAlarm wasn't in the system tray. Then, I realized that ZoneAlarm's service was loaded, but the tray icon wasn't. So I loaded the GUI for ZoneAlarm and sure enough it was set to High. Setting it to Medium restored her connectivity.

It had been awhile since I used ZoneAlarm, so I couldn't remember off-hand the correct Internet setting and just assumed that some rogue ZoneAlarm update had changed some settings. With the news that a Microsoft Update messed things up, it all makes more sense. Here's hoping that a fix gets released by Microsoft or ZoneAlarm soon.
