What's good for the goose...

"Cable's monopoly power has eroded so much that forcing cable systems to carry local TV stations is no longer a legally sustainable policy, according to Verizon Communications.."

Guess this spokesman does not read BBR.

While people keep talking about how FiOS is GREAT! Verizon will poo-poo all the "must carry" and local subsidies (aka extortion) and continue to red line in neighborhoods (to the dismay of many).

Keep up the good PR work Verizon. The masses have not picked up on the plan yet.

Some quotes from Verizon

"[An extension] would not meaningfully serve the commission's interest in promoting diversity, and instead could crowd out some of the diverse programming that video providers carry today."

"Even robust systems have some capacity limits, and any capacity that must be allocated to satisfy new carriage mandates necessarily takes away capacity that could otherwise be used for other purposes."

"And those other purposes may include the carriage of other diverse, local, or niche programming or the carriage of more HD programming."
Yeah -- think about all the diverse, local, or niche programming you'd miss out if your TV service was forced to carry low-power stations (those best known for diverse, local, or niche programming)!

And there are a lot of diverse, local, and niche programming that is on cable-only, and would be the most likely to have to get cut if must-carry low-power meant they needed to get rid of a few stations.

bullcrap, but with ISPs running for caps and throttles, they are making the argument for LPTV must-carry rules.

In any case, have you ever seen a Verizon representative say they're in FAVOR of any sort of regulation? Honestly, every single issue that comes up you have some Verizon spokesperson saying that they say they believe regulation isn't necessary...

Hulu to start streaming broadcast shows BEFORE 1st broadcast

The net gets it before TV does!!!

»news.cnet.com/8301-1023_3-100307···1_3-0-20
Fans of such NBC shows as Knight Rider, Chuck, and 30 Rock will be able to see their season premieres first on Hulu.

NBC Universal, which created Hulu in partnership with News Corp., decided to debut the season premiers on the Web video.

While this is the first time that Hulu has streamed season premieres from a major network, this isn't the first time it's happened. NBC.com did it last year and according to Chris Albrecht over at Newteevee, HBO released Flight of the Conchords on the Web last year as well.

Still, the trend of premiering TV shows on the Web continues to illustrates how much TV networks and cable channels are beginning to respect the Internet as a distribution channel.

Re: Hulu to start streaming broadcast shows BEFORE 1st broadcast

Works for me. Though it's only a few shows altogether, I watch more shows via Hulu than any other single source (the others being OTA and DVD).
