Coast's integrity (or lack thereof) costs them
(old news - 11:25AM Saturday Feb 05 2005)
tags: business · spyware
As we've criticized, spyware/adware vendors are trying their best to buy legitimacy; either through striking marketing deals with anti-spyware vendors who in turn weaken their detection criteria, or worse; somehow infiltrating anti-spyware groups like COAST (so they can pretend they aren't part of the problem). The tactic obviously has many people angry; Castlecops noting that Webroot Software has quit COAST (Consortium of Anti-Spyware Technology Vendors) because of their recent decision to let adware vendor 180Solutions join the organization.

Well, DUH!

When COAST (Consortium of Anti-Spyware Technology Vendors) starts letting crapware companies BUY their way in to a group of anti-crapware companies... time to get the hell out! It's bad enough that some of these vendors of s*** have bought their way out of detection from the individual companies... now they are getting on the inside? Pass!

WTF??

What is wrong with you AquaBlaze?
That type comment just turned me off to the rest of the subject at hand.

I am aware that everyone has the right of free speech, but your type of M. Moore comments make me SICK! You better hang on tight to your extreme leftist views, as your kind is becoming an endangered species.
Why must you attempt to make a psuedo-political statement out of MALWARE? Just another sore (John Kerry-Ted Kennedy-Tom Daschle) loser I suspect. GET A GRIP.

Re: WTF??

Try reading the scientific questions into the 9/11 tower collapse then...interesting stuff. Not to meantion all the aid we gave to "the enemy" while they were "our friend". There were hands involved each and every way...and sad to say, the image as a whole isn't pretty.

But, if you prefer to live inside the media-fed box, accepting such tripe as "the magic bullet theory", etc., and enjoy not having to think outside the pretty picture painted for us all...be my guest.

Back to the topic at hand, I don't really feel that there's any connection between crapware writers and crapware preventers...but like many things have proven to me before, you have to keep your mind open to such possibilities.

LOL...yeah, that's why there's right-wing media boys writing pro-whoever topics for sale to the highest bidder, not to meantion the entire Fox-Propaganda-Network crapola.

Honestly, that "liberals control the media" is such bunk. If that was the case, why am I getting hit with the latest right-wing media spin on EVERY DAMN CHANNEL I TURN TO? If liberals were really in control of things, they certainly aren't doing a good job in "controlling their media".

Please.

Good Move Webroot!

Now I can trust your products again! I'm surprized though that they didn't pack up & bail out the day COAST signed up 180solutions. My guess is that they tried to hang around, fix the problem from within, and found irreconsiliable differences with the other members. Moh well, their loss.

What actual Spyware-removal programs do they still have signed up under COAST now, 1? 0? Aluria doesn't count here...anything that lists WhenU as "Spyware Safe" is just another spyware peddler, IMHO.

On a side note, something interesting in the articles listed above. They go into details about how WeatherBug is spyware. Many people have felt that they've cleaned up their act, but I personally feel that any crapware vendor can't be trusted - period. Nice to have some evidence to back up my gut feelings on this one.

I agree, good move Webroot. Nice to see there is still some ethics left in a few boardrooms.

I for one will be again renewing my subscription to Spy Sweeper.

Absolutely. It is about time they showed some ethics. Hopefully this will become a trend.

Re: Good Move Webroot!

I agree, the freebies are the best spyware preventers available. I can't believe anyone pays for that, they leave alot of stuff behind, and spybot and adaware are the 2 best by far.

Re: Good Move Webroot!

Well, I have a Webroot licence. And although I agree Adaware is a good spyware remover, Spyware goes further.

It has shields to prevent Spyware getting on you PC in the first place.

For me that's worth paying for.

But to react on the topic starter. Good move of Webroot. Ad/Spyware companies have no place in COAST.

Re: Good Move Webroot!

Actually, I use IE-Spyad for ad/spy/crapware prevention...and it does a remarkably good job too, without interfering with the user at all. Even old definitions (several months and going) still hold at bay most of the crapware install attempts out there.

AD-Aware Pro has a smiliar shield, -> Ad Watch which comes with pro

Last time I checked, SpySweeper detects over 2x as much spyware as Spybot.

Of course, most just look at the numbers and say "look how many it found!!".... without realizing that most are cookies and not spyware programs. Many don't have any idea there is a difference.

No offense, but I don't want tracking cookies either. What good does it do me to have them on my computer? Nothing...hell, they may even be giving away more information than I'd like. IE-Spyad prevents a lot of these cookies from getting inserted, and good riddance.

Jeesh and someguy,
Oh believe me, I know the difference.
You're not dealing with a noob here.
I lose track of counting how many times Spybot thinks a PC is clean, when SpySweeper will find real, not traces or cookies, spyware running on the PC. Free is good for what it's worth. Witnessing this from a real world, hands on experience with countless PCs speaks for itself....

Re: Good Move Webroot!

Personally, I use Spybot/Ad-Aware to detect the presence of a Ad/Spy/Crapware infection. Upon getting back a positive test result, I know that it's time to just wipe the damn system.

I use spybot/ad-aware and microsoft anti-spyware, no spyware here.
Microsoft's software works great. It is after all just repackaged Giant software which was one of the best on the market.

Why hate Webroot? It's good software. It does it's job (removing Ad/Spyware) as well as the big boys, includes nice auto-updating features, (for those not liking to play with IE-Spyad) and the software is very reliable. True, it would be more cost-effective to use Spybot/Ad-Aware/IE-Spyad (free), but this commercial product does what it claims well, and it's the user's choice wether or not they want to pay for use of this product.

Plus...have you seen some of the competing for-pay Ad/Spy/Crapware vendors? Some just rip-off the freebies, and some even install crapware themselves! Another big plus for Webroot.

Actually, this is the 2nd major spyware removal player to leave COAST - Lavasoft did it in Dec 2003.. take a look at COAST's membership list, no real big names there. BBR has a better support listing and membership following (as an example).

Spybot S&D is just one of the "trusted" removal programs available for free, but a good techie uses more than 1 tool in his arsenal / tool kit to get the job done.

Spyware Sucks

I truly wonder, why we can sue the tobacco company for billions, because it kills people... Yet they knew the risk.. Yet, we cant sue the spyware companies for millions or billions, when the risks are less evident, but it is still destroying our sense of life. While not killing us, this shit damages property at huge costs, IE personal computers... Wish some state would hammer these fucks with a few class actions, not that the money would benefit the normal people.... but least maybe get rid of these guys. Im so sick of removing this crap, ive finally avoided many places and careful to click no to those popups. Still, some backdoor ya regardless, and i think they should be forced to pay for the time of removal and the damage.. But hey Im not a politician and Im not on the take from soft money, so i guess this rational opinion means squat once you move up the food chain to bribery.

Microsoft has a free antispyware tool, and there are no subscription fees, so why are we even talking about this?

Re: I use....

Ad-aware, Norton.... makes no difference! The best thing to use is: netstat -a to see what's running on what port and what it talks to, there's also a nice little utility called openports, tells ya what .exe is sitting on what port. Ethereal is also yet another good tool. Clean out the c:\Windows\Prefetch folder. Run MSconfig and see what starts when the machine is booting up, anything that looks funky, i.e. hjdfhgkjysg, is definitely not supposed to be there. There should be no services running out of c:\windows\system\ (i.e. lsass.exe), or c:\windows. Also, turn off System Restore.

I know, it's a lot of manual work, but I haven't had any issues in years! no pop-ups at all! ( I guess the fact that I also filter all inbound AND OUTBOUND traffic helps).

Spyware/Adware Webroot Quits

I've read what all your folks are saying pro and con but most of you seem to ignore one basic premise and if you'd cry to your Senator and Congressman as much and as often as you cry on these boards you could get real action. Maybe I'm old fashion but I use DIAL UP, for those of you who think that's ancient, let me remind you it comes through my telephone line and that's where we got the purveyors of adware and spyware by the old bazookas ... installing a program on my machine to spy on my activities is a trespass onto my property. I'm not a lawyer, but I know for a fact, no one can tap your telephone line and track your telephonic activities without authorization from a judge. The same thing applies, why is law enforcement allowing these people to do what is in effect "tap your phone line" to track your internet activity and to control your machine without the approval of a court of law. If some of you dim wits would hire a lawyer or two and start filing law suits a lot of this crap would stop and it would stop real fast. If I were rich and could afford such a suit you can bet your bottom I'd be right there in front of a judge filing a suit for tresspass and violation of privacy. SO GET WITH IT AND HOUND YOUR CONGRESS LIKE YOU HOUND THESE COMMENT SITES, IT WOULD DO A HECK OF A LOT MORE GOOD AND REMEMBER THE SQUEAKY WHEEL GETS THE GREASE, ENOUGH OF YOU LET WASHINGTON KNOW AND THESE A-HOLES WILL BE PUT IN THEIR PLACE DAMN QUICK. IF NOT THEN YOU GET WHAT YOU DESERVE.

Uh CQA, take a chill pill or something. Geesh, enough with the shouting (CAPS!!!) It's really not necessary. Anyways, it appears the spyware makers are the ones who are filing lawsuits, while I agree it should be us filing lawsuits against them.
