By having them do troubleshooting on their own
(old news - 03:09PM Sunday Jan 13 2008)
tags: business · trouble · VoIP · consumers · Vonage
Vonage has launched an initiative, called MyVonage, which is designed to retain the customers that the VoIP company currently still has. Many Vonage customers fled the company in the last year as the provider dealt with its many patent lawsuits. Concerns about bankruptcy and problems with outages caused those customers to start looking elsewhere for VoIP services. The company hopes that MyVonage will give them more credibility with their remaining customers. The first step in MyVonage was the recent release of V-Portal, a troubleshooting gadget that should make it easier for Vonage customers to fix their own problems instead of having to rely on customer service.

Vonage Tries to Keep Customers

Lets spend less money on marketing & more money on making the service more dependable. Rather then sending some calls to Philippines it would be better to spend marketing dollars employing more American personnel in the United States.

Wow!

MyVonage product strategy with the introduction of the V-Portal -- a "digital voice adapter and single port router with a built-in LCD." Reportedly, the screen can be used for "caller ID, timing calls, call logging, easy access to Vonage service numbers and for displaying the date and time," »www.engadget.com/2008/01/07/vona···-portal/
Wow! All the features that I've already got on my $30 2.4ghz phone LCD screen, plus a router I can't use with my internet service anyway. Doubtless somebody will claim that the technology is already patented!

I've never had an issue in 2 years

If vonage fails it forwards to my Cell phone and it's as simple as that. I'm not dependent on the service being there as much as I want my cell phone to work. Past that if Vonage goes under I'll just buy a voice adapter for a cell phone to allow it to make calls for my security system.

Aren't those around $75 or more and cost $20-$30 a month? If that is all you're using it for then why not just go with nextalarm.com? They don't require a phone line. You just plug your security system into your internet connection. They also contact you when they lose connectivity to your system I have been using for a couple years. Its great. instead of paying $25-$35 a month to ADT or Brinks I pay them about $10 a month. There I just saved you $50 a month or so. If you are interested please contact me so I can send you a referal also.

Give us what we WANT Vonage

All I want is the ability to block specific phone numbers, not some useless doo-dad. I'm not the only one who has been wanting and waiting and asking for this for over three years.

They STILL haven't added that? It was the reason (ok, only one of the reasons) I switched almost 3 years ago.

Nope it's one of, if not THE most requested features to be added . . .
and Vonage has IGNORED requests.

I don't blame you for leaving over this . . . it looks like it's gonna' be the straw that broke the camel's back for me, too. I was all set to leave for ViaTalk, but then I started seeing reports of the issues there, and decided to wait for a little while.

I've been extremely happy with my decision to move to VoicePulse. They don't have the prettiest user interface (the web config) but it works, and once you learn it, you are gold.

Was a vonage customer for 2 years before my RT31P2 router died...after that it was a horrible mess trying to get a new router that worked..after spending upwards of 15 hours on phone calls i gave up and am much happier with my 40 dollar a month verizon line through FiOS :P no more hassle...

Vonage has been solid the past 4 months

The service has been great to me. No outages, or any other service issues. I hate to see the company go belly up, it's a good value, and loads of features. I could not be happier. Much better than most cell phone providers in my experience.

4 Months? Try rock solid service for (almost) 5 years. No $40+ a month verizon bill for me... I LIKE saving money, not wasting it. All my friends and family are on Vonage also.

Re: Vonage has been solid the past 4 months

Going on 4 years of service without any problems. The worst that happens would be either an ISP outage which would take the phone down, but well can't help that. My POTS line has been down more than my Vonage line and it nearly cost as much as vonage with no features or long distance or touch tone dialing for that matter. The only reason I have it is for a security system and emergency phone just in case.

Problems?

No problems noticed here in Sacramento. I use Vonage on a dailly basis and EVERY day I have recordings on the answering machine while I'm at work from my Vonage line. Sound quality is fine, dependability is great. I do agree with one previous poster that selective call blocking, for me, is the biggie that Vonage is lacking.

Yep, me too. No problems really at all over almost 3 years and 3 lines; one of which is a fax. Couldn't be happier with Vonage.

Fled?

I had Vonage for a rather long time, I left for no other reason than I didn't need a home phone any longer, the kids needed a line that was not land locked by any provider. Course that could open a very large can of worms too.

We have heard the screaming masses that have claimed Vonage would go down, that's been going on for almost two years, time they gave that dead horse a break.

$40 divorce fee

Any chance of eliminating that $40 divorce fee for leaving Vonage? It's only a matter of time before Vonage raises its prices to pay for the coming patent settlements as it chews through it's warchest of profits.

I doubt that they would raise prices. They have been at this price a long time. If they raised prices then more people would leave. I actually think they should lower prices some to compete more since people are more likely to go with the cable company $99/mo deals and then just stick with that (even though you have to fight with them). My grandmother lives in a valley and her cell phone barely works in the house. She wants to keep all on one bill and have the 1-2 day fix that comcast has.

I love Vonage

I've had the service since February of 2007, I was so satisfied with Vonage, that last month (December, 2007) I ported my home number from Verizon (I was a customer since August of 1978, when it was known as New Jersey Bell) to Vonage, my oldest son also ported his personal Verizon number per my positive experience with and my subsequent referral to Vonage. My porting was completed in 5 days, including a toll free number that I've had for quite a few years, my son's porting took 3 days. Due to the porting referrals I'm getting 4 months of free service, my son's getting 2. I'm currently trying to convince my parents and my wife's relatives to also dump Verizon. I love Vonage and I hope that it survives the onslaught from the overpriced behemoths with which it competes.

ride it...

I'll ride Vonage until it dies.

I've been a customer for about 4 years and only had 2 issues and both were handled efficiently by very competent english speaking support people. Also when my internet goes out the calls have always been forwarded to my cell phone so it's a non issue.

I'm sure over the years I've saved hundreds, I hope the big telco's don't sue them out of business.

Cut my phone bill in half and got many extras like long distance and lots more. Love my Vonage. We just signed up my sister-in-law two free months of service. Got to love that, I would give it back to keep them afloat

Quality of service depends on your situation

The quality of service with Vonage seem to be dependent on your geographic location and ISP. No sense just arguing that "it rocks" or "it sucks". Both are true and dependent on your particular situation.

I'm no longer a Vonage customer but I think it is in EVERYONES best interest that Vonage thrives.

uteck

@ual.com

Happy, but still looking

I have had Vonage for about 5 years now and all the problems I have had were due to bad routers, but the original Cisco ATA they sent is still working fine. Evey now and then people I am talking to say the call quality is not that good, but they sound fine to me.
I would drop Vonage if I had decent cell coverage at home, but my house is in a 'valley' between towers so all providers have a tough time and it really comes down to the quality of the antana in the phone.

Vonage for 3 years; not been all that bad

I'm paying about $30/month with the fees for the unlimited plan with Vonage. Have had it since I moved into my first house 3 years ago.

I've considered going over to Comcast Digital Voice, but the very fact that they have to come in and drop a $30 install fee on you to set up a router BEFORE they charge you $40/month is just too much to swallow.

Comcast has never provided by house their plan inclusive Speedboost technologies that I see on so many other computers in Atlanta at friends' houses/apartments. I seriously have issues relying on them for phone service. Esp. if Vonage works fine and we have cell phones for emergencies.

Vonage sound quality has been the only issue, and I have reason to believe that has somewhat to do with Comcast traffic shaping in my area. When Digital Voice was launched about a year ago, our Vonage call quality suffered -- it's come back up, but some in-laws swear it sounds awful.

Your mileage may vary...

@verizon.net

I already did, because it offered the blocking features for specific phone numbers that Vonage doesn't. I made the decision to switch when Vonage customer service had made it clear that there were absolutely no plans in the works whatsoever to add such a feature.

I was actually surprised at how much better the call quality is on CallVantage. It absolutely sounds as clear as any typical land line phone. I can't say the same for Vonage, which I had for over two years. I was often plagued with complaints of echoing from whoever I had called... and service would just go out sometimes. In nearly a year, I have yet to have any such problems with AT&T CV.

Someone else here proclaimed that Vonage is all over AT&T CV because it leads in subscribers. Let's be real there: AT&T isn't even remotely *pushing* its VOIP service because it doesn't want to siphon away from its own analong, land line services. Having experienced both, I can tell you it definitely has nothing to do with Vonage being ''better'' in quality - because it isn't.

How intelligent.

Don't hold your breath, it seems the majority of people are happy with their service. Too bad others bailed out prematurely.

Optimum Voice (the only other alternative that I would even consider) is a bit more expensive and doesn't have free, UNLIMITED calls to Europe....why would I want to switch when Vonage works great?

Most issues are the fault of the user's ISP being flaky.

Solid for the past 4 years I had Vonage

I had Vonage for the past 4 years. It has been solid, never any problems. I had a toll-free number added that my mom calls me from Michigan. Worked every time. I really like it. Forgot a number, log in to the page and there it is. I started when they were $30 a month then dropped to $25.
I also call international a lot no problems ever. Very clear. I am very happy with it. Hope they stay in business.

what some former Vonage Customers want!

Without a doubt we compete with Vonmage in a small way. I always hear the same kinds of things from former Vonage Customers....

"You Mean I can not use my Vonage ATA with your service?"

"...switching from Vonage because we want to call users on other networks free of charge"

"...Switching from Vonage because when we originally sighed up we did not really know what internet Telephone service was capable of and now we want to use voxalot/asterisk/other services"

And here is a big one

"...switching from Vonage because they will not allow annonymous SIP inbounds / do not peer with other networks"

Give em what they want, and you do not need to spend millions on customer retention!

Vonage

What I find amazing is the fact that every forum has someone in it making statements about Vonage. (I have no intention of offending anyone or putting anyone down here). The reason everyone says what they say is because they don't know what is truly happening. Here is what I mean:

1. Vonage is still the best rated VoIP provider in the country. Now this is based on various different things such as: price, clarity, and innovation. Forbes and all these other magazines say this, not just me or Vonage.

2. If Vonage has such horrible service, why do they beat AT&T's Call Vantage, Verizon's almost dead VoiceWing, and SunRocket (Oh wait, they are dead)?

All I am saying guys, is that Vonage is a very innovative company and yes it has its flaws but so many things are offered at such a low price and good quality. The new device that is coming out or already has come out, the V-Portal, is not just another device with an LCD screen. It is a self diagnosing device which is supposed to make the end-user's life easier. It will tell you what is wrong or broken. What I dont get is that people still complain, when Vonage had devices with blinking lights, people complained then too.

Also this device will have future features such as running a bandwidth test right from the device and never turning on your computer.

Also, a lot of people have issues with Vonage because honestly...they either dont set it up right or are stubborn and refuse to move the device off of a router with a SPI firewall and put the Vonage router direct to their modem.

I dont know what else to say. I admit, tech support isnt the best. But I have been with them for 2 years now and i have just had to reboot my device like 2 times a year and that even was because my ISP changed my public IP.

Not Bad At All

I had two minor problems in about four years. Both required some echo canceling issues, on two different devices and numbers. Once I left Adelphia (now Comcast) things worked great. Yes, Verizon DSL is "slower" but it is MUCH better for VoIP. The dropped packets and jitter just kill it on cable.

I have used several other VoIP providers which I WON'T recommend. By far, Vonage has the best customer service (which isn't saying much) and BY FAR the best service, and features.

The thing I had with Sunrocket (out of business) and TeleLink (a disaster ready to fail) is number blocking. MAN, I enjoy that feature. Some telemarketer calls me and BOOM, they never get through again. My call logs show roughly 30 to 60 calls A DAY blocked! Imagine if I actually had to answer them!

The Do Not Call List should apply to businesses too.

Now there is one other issue with Vonage. I left a job and no longer needed the out of state business number I had. It was TORTURE canceling the account, and that is the only reason I would be reluctant to sign up again. By the time I got off the phone I was extremely angry. While they never offered me actual FREE service, they offered to lower my Business Limited to Unlimited Residential, then to Limited Residential $15/month.

OK, that is yet another issue. They collect an unadvertised charge every month. They call it "regulatory recovery" or something similar, making one think it is required by the gubbernment. Not so -- they are ripping people off. THIS is the reason I will never use them again. I hate many cellular carriers for these lies too.
