| Re: Forget AT & T Am I the only one that finds the hypocrisy in Vonage's statements? They said they submitted an app to the App Store and it was approved... but they are currently beta testing the app? If they are still beta testing it, why did they even submit it to the App Store? Even if they had submitted the app and are still beta testing it, any fixes or revisions of the app still has to go through the Apple approval process, which may result it in actually being denied... I smell some B.S. in what Vonage is selling. | |

1 edit | Re: missing something said by gigahurtz :said by footballdude :Vonage provides VOIP. Why would anyone want VOIP on an iPhone? Does AT&T bill the phone service and data service separately? Unless this is something new, this app could also be used on the iPod Touch. Some head phones with a mic and someone should be able to use it as a phone when near a WiFi connection. From what I'm hearing, it looks like another VOIP application for the iPod Touch/iPhone (using WiFi). Stuff like this is already available for the iPod/iPhone for Skype and other SIP/VOIP providers (using an application like SipPhone for iPhone from the App Store). Nothing revolutionary, although using your phone adapter (ATA) I feel is more reliable.
I'm thinking they'll want to charged extra for this service, as that's their pattern. If it was a free add-on, it might be worthwhile, but I wouldn't be willing to pay extra.

Right now I have it set to allow for downloads >10mb from the App Store and downloads from the iTunes store irregardless of size. Greater than 10 mb? Because for example, a Vonage customer could have yet another tool to access their VoIP service from a Wi-fi for example. I don't know how the call plans go, maybe some people are paying by the minute for phone service, but the wi-fi would be free where ever you could access it. -- Fight Insight Ready (Was NebuAD) and the like: Click Here to pollute their data

| Let's see...
On Monday I got an email from my company's telecomm team, telling me that I have been using the company's blackberry sim card in a non-company owned iphone. It took them 2 freaken years to figure this out... but ok... I ran to tmobile, got a data only monthly plan for 40 a month less 15%. Obviously TMo's 3g being on the 1700Mhz frequency sucks, since the iphone supports 1800 and 2100 I think... but just imagine... if all I had was a data plan and I had a working VoIP app. actually I tested skype over EDGE yesterday and it wasn't that bad either... to make a long story short.
If we could simply get data plans on ATT for 30 bucks, I wouldn't doubt that most of the Techies would simply get the data plan and drop a VoIP app on the damned thing and carry on with their lives as usual.

| Precursor? All of this VOIP stuff would be great if you could just get "data only" plans from the various providers. Given how much the terrestrial HSI providers are fighting just becoming "dumb pipes", I somehow don't see that happening without legislative intervention. Would be interesting to see if someone with the financial power of a Google would get into a data-only wireless carrier business. -- The trouble with the world is that the stupid are cocksure and the intelligent are full of doubt. -- Bertrand Russell | |

No only if T-Mo had decent coverage... and their freaken 3g wasn't running on the 1700mhz band... but hey we can't ask for too much... can we?

| Waste! When I first got my touch I put Skype on it and paid the $2.99 per month to be able to make outgoing calls and receive calls. I NEVER used it. You can ONLY use it over wifi, same as Vonage. Even if you have 3G it does not matter. It's VOIP so you need a wifi connection. I don't know about where you live but where I live most wifi connections are locked and there are very few free hot spots. To make a long story short, it was a complete waste so I took Skype off. Not to mention they give you a tel. number which is the last thing I need. I could not rely on forwarding my cell calls to Skype bc the connection was not consistent. Bottom line, waste! Hope this helps. | |
