But you won't get to actually use it yet...

Given Vonage stock recently jumped some 33% simply on the news they were developing a voice application for the iPhone, the company is trying to milk interest further by issuing a press release stating the application has been approved by Apple. Unfortunately, you won't be able to use it just yet. "Vonage is currently conducting a beta test and general availability will be announced at a later date," says the company. While the quick approval may be the result of a watchful FCC and the Google Voice fiasco, it's still unlikely that the application will work over AT&T's 3G network.

Forget AT & T

Well, As long as there's a wireless network nearby I'm not sure it matters if you can use A T & T's Network

Re: Forget AT & T

Am I the only one that finds the hypocrisy in Vonage's statements? They said they submitted an app to the App Store and it was approved... but they are currently beta testing the app? If they are still beta testing it, why did they even submit it to the App Store? Even if they had submitted the app and are still beta testing it, any fixes or revisions of the app still has to go through the Apple approval process, which may result it in actually being denied... I smell some B.S. in what Vonage is selling.

missing something

Vonage provides VOIP. Why would anyone want VOIP on an iPhone? Does AT&T bill the phone service and data service separately?

Unless this is something new, this app could also be used on the iPod Touch. Some head phones with a mic and someone should be able to use it as a phone when near a WiFi connection.

From what I'm hearing, it looks like another VOIP application for the iPod Touch/iPhone (using WiFi). Stuff like this is already available for the iPod/iPhone for Skype and other SIP/VOIP providers (using an application like SipPhone for iPhone from the App Store). Nothing revolutionary, although using your phone adapter (ATA) I feel is more reliable.

I'm thinking they'll want to charged extra for this service, as that's their pattern. If it was a free add-on, it might be worthwhile, but I wouldn't be willing to pay extra.

Yes. You have x amount of minutes on your plan and then the data usage. So in theory you could drop you plan down to the lowest amount and use the Vonage app to make your calls. That is also assuming it could be used over 3G which it would be a cold day before that could happen.

I have used VoIP over the 3G network and it was not that hot due to the latency.

If you travel internationally, this could be handy, but there is Truphone, Pennytel, Nimbuzz, Fring, and I'm sure a number of other solutions out there.

There's always 3G Unrestrictor, for anyone who wants to take 10 minutes to jailbreak their iPhone and spend the (I think) $2.00 for it.

Of course, 3G Unrestrictor would do more than just allow the Vonage app to run over 3G... Right now I have it set to allow for downloads >10mb from the App Store and downloads from the iTunes store irregardless of size. Oh, and let's not forget enabling Joost over a 3G connection. Nothing like watching a little video at lunchtime every day.

This was probably one of the best purchases I made for my iPhone since I bought it. Removing pointless restrictions allows me to set the data free...

Greater than 10 mb? Let me know when anyone has one that can break 1 mb, LOL.

Re: missing something

Need for Speed Undercover was larger than that. I think that Apple's Texas Hold Em app was larger too.

He was thinking app size vs download speed.

Low international rates are the reason I'd want to use VOIP on any cellphone.

Voice Over Internet Protocol...

Is the most stupid thing in the universe to have on a cell phone as a 3rd party application using 3G. Hello, it's all ready a phone......... Wifi, sure, but over 3G? Why?!

$$$$

Because for example, a Vonage customer could have yet another tool to access their VoIP service from a Wi-fi for example. I don't know how the call plans go, maybe some people are paying by the minute for phone service, but the wi-fi would be free where ever you could access it.

It would be cost-effective subscribing to a cheap voice plan and append data to it than it would be using up your daytime minutes.

But yes, you're right in the practical sense. Someone needs to make a data-only device that places/receives SIP phone calls.

That would piss off all the major carriers.

Let's see...

On Monday I got an email from my company's telecomm team, telling me that I have been using the company's blackberry sim card in a non-company owned iphone. It took them 2 freaken years to figure this out... but ok... I ran to tmobile, got a data only monthly plan for 40 a month less 15%. Obviously TMo's 3g being on the 1700Mhz frequency sucks, since the iphone supports 1800 and 2100 I think... but just imagine... if all I had was a data plan and I had a working VoIP app. actually I tested skype over EDGE yesterday and it wasn't that bad either... to make a long story short.

If we could simply get data plans on ATT for 30 bucks, I wouldn't doubt that most of the Techies would simply get the data plan and drop a VoIP app on the damned thing and carry on with their lives as usual.

Precursor?

All of this VOIP stuff would be great if you could just get "data only" plans from the various providers. Given how much the terrestrial HSI providers are fighting just becoming "dumb pipes", I somehow don't see that happening without legislative intervention. Would be interesting to see if someone with the financial power of a Google would get into a data-only wireless carrier business.

Re: Precursor?

I have a T-Mobile data only plan. 40 bucks a month less 15% off and no 5 gig CAP. it's called Total Internet.

No only if T-Mo had decent coverage... and their freaken 3g wasn't running on the 1700mhz band... but hey we can't ask for too much... can we?

Waste!

When I first got my touch I put Skype on it and paid the $2.99 per month to be able to make outgoing calls and receive calls. I NEVER used it. You can ONLY use it over wifi, same as Vonage. Even if you have 3G it does not matter. It's VOIP so you need a wifi connection. I don't know about where you live but where I live most wifi connections are locked and there are very few free hot spots. To make a long story short, it was a complete waste so I took Skype off. Not to mention they give you a tel. number which is the last thing I need. I could not rely on forwarding my cell calls to Skype bc the connection was not consistent. Bottom line, waste! Hope this helps.

Stock pump and dump

This whole thing is just a way for Vonage to get a stock spike so the insiders can dump some shares. They (Vonage) don't really care if the app works or not.

The guy that runs Vonage, Jeffrey A. Citron , is a master of the pump & dump. He is doing to Vonage the same thing he did to Datec.

Re: Stock pump and dump

When Vonage went public, Jeff Citron's involvement was greatly reduced. Marconi (the guy who invented the radio) was also convicted of securities fraud, but that didn't stop him from being a good engineer.
