Verizon's Double Data Cap Offer Returns Friday
$30 for 4 GB of Usage Offer Returns
by Karl Bode Tuesday 07-Feb-2012 tags: prices · business · wireless · bandwidth · wireless
Last November Verizon Wireless launched a new promotion offering new LTE users double their usual data allotment for wireless data plans, something Verizon admitted was both to push users toward new LTE phones -- and away from their EVDO network in order to ease any possible iPhone congestion issues. The deal recently ceased, but was part of the reason AT&T raised their caps ever-so-slightly (unfortunately, their prices increased as well). Now, in addition to the launch of the Droid 4, Verizon plans to bring the deal back starting February 10. As of Friday, anybody that buys a new LTE smartphone can once again get double data for their selected plan, which for most of you means $30 for 4 GB of monthly usage.

Well timed VZ

VZ timed this well, especially considering the AT&T fracas this week.

Only thing that will make AT&T change its ways is better pricing by its competitors that makes people leave.

Yawn...

If we must have caps, then I will still object to not being able to use data in ways I wish to, such as tethering. If I am going to pay by the byte, then the data provider shouldn't care what devices use those bytes.

I can tether my tablet without a problem. Verizon didn't restrict anything on it. Do they disable all of those features on the phones that have caps?

You do have the ability to do it, but if you are caught doing it you get pushed into a tethering plan. That plan just charges you more money for the same bytes.

Re: Yawn...

They do give you 2GB of extra data for the tethering plans, which comes out to be the same rate as their overage fees, at $10/GB.

How do you do that without a tethering plan? Is your device jail broken. I am not able to tether unless I have a plan which I currently do with Verizon. I tether my iPhone to my iPad to save 10.00 versus having a separate iPad 3G plan.

times like these

..I'm glad to be on little U.S. Cellular with 5GB/mo. and a droid that isn't as locked down.

Sure, I rarely use more than slightly over 2GB/mo, but I like not having to worry.

3-4GB/mo should be minimum standard. 2GB is right at that limit where they KNOW people will cross it.

Re: times like these

I'll be calling Friday to get this added to my recently purchased 4G phone on my family plan because my other phone is unlimited grandfathered data.

Re: well well

Of course I missed the 2x data offer buying my RAZR MAXX last week. Hopefully a call this friday can get me that offer. Hope they don't give me a hassle like return the phone and re-order of some crap since I'm in the 14 day return period.

This is where Verizon tells people that anyone

using over their caps is KILLING THE NETWORK and HURTING OTHERS.

Oh, except if you pay a little more...you can use more....oh, and we won't ever actually explain HOW they hurt the network.

But trust Verizon & AT&T, they do!
