Traditional copper? Who needs it?
(old news - 10:01AM Monday Oct 27 2008)

Tipped by JeepMatt See Profile
Verizon issued their third quarter earnings this morning, which indicate the telco added 233,000 net new FiOS TV customers and 225,000 net new FiOS Internet customers during the third quarter. On the flip side, the company also lost 96,000 DSL customers, some of that due to FiOS, some of it due to cable triple play competition, and some of it due to the economy. Some of it is also due to Verizon themselves -- the telco has lessened their marketing and general upkeep budgets for DSL services in order to push FiOS and wireless, something some workers haven't been happy about. The company continued to lose landline customers as well, though wireless services continue to be a cash cow even in the face of iPhone defections. Wireless revenue helped to drive a 31% overall increase in third quarter profits.

So how will Verizon answer the loss of copper subs?

Price increases and new junk fees. But it looks like putting customers over a barrel with endless crap fees works give their profit increase.

Why upkeep DSL when....

Youve invested 70 BILLION in running fiber to homes.

Re: Why upkeep DSL when....

Especially when they intend to switch to an all fios network. It requires less maintenance then dsl and the regular copper network. SO long term they save on how many employees they need to keep the network up.

Nah. It's an all FiOS network. if you look back they've talked about running xDSL to rural areas instead of fiber :/

They do not intend on switching to an all FIOS network. When will that get through to some of you. If you live in the big city, upscale neighborhood, or a politically favorable area, you may get it. Those of us in rural areas will never see it.

If Verizon gets their way, you won't be seeing big Red as your ILEC for long either- the long-term plans appears to be to convert what's profitable to FiOS, and sell off the rest to someone else, ideally with huge tax benefits.

I live next to Lawrence, MA, one of the 5 poorest places in the US. They were wired for FIOS before we were. Does this fall under "politically favorable"? In that case, what doesn't fall under one of the three.

I expect them to install their network everywhere they can get an adequate ROE. Would you expect otherwise?

Depends how you define poor. $1,100 of per capita income goes A LOT farther in Texas than it does in Mass. My info is dated, I'll admit, but I don't think its gotten any better over there. At least not according to the daily police log in the local paper.

No, I'm sure ROE plays into most of the reason an area get FIOS, but I'm sure politics also does. Perhaps Lawrence, MA is in the district of some hotshot politican, or maybe they are deploying there to avoid charges of red lining. All I can tell you is that FIOS will never reach 100% of Verizon's copper customers. The only way Verizon will be 100% FIOS is if they are able to sell off areas that they don't plan on deploying it to.

Of course not. Because it will never be profitable to string 300 miles of fiber optic cable to a shack in the Appalachians (otherwise known as West Virgina).

Lets not forget

While Verizon is pushing FIOS to SINGLE OCCUPANCY HOMES, all I get in my APARTMENT mailbox is Verizon offer “amazing fast” 768K/128K. At the same time, Comcast offered me an upgrade to 8Mbps tier. MDU FIOS still vaporware and I will be switching to digital voice. Can it be Verizon putting all its attention to fiber and neglecting its copper customers is the reason for loss of DSL customers? Nah says the cult of fiber.

Uh, I thought it was commonly accepted that Verizon was neglecting its DSL infrastructure to push out FiOS faster?

Actually, I am posting right now using my FIOS connections in the comfort of my apartment. It has been almost a year since my apartment complex was wired up with fiber and when I ordered service Verizon installed an ONT right in my closet. I'm in the Dallas area and some apartment complexes even advertise FIOS availability. You should checkout apartmentguide.com, it has an option to search for complexes with FIOS available as one of the amenities.

Verizon has been expanding to apartment complexes for a long time now. Just about every apartment complex in Verizon territory in Lewisville is wired for FiOS as well as many other cities in North Texas. I've had it for 1.5 years in my apartment myself. The only complexes that don't have FiOS are because they have Time Warner contracted exclusively It just depends on whether they are deploying it in your area. It wouldn't make sense to give the housing neighborhood next to you access to FiOS but leave the apartment complex with 200+ residents out.

That's what happened in my area, we have 300 in the complex where I live. but only the homes around us got FIOS. I stand corrected. I wonder about is there an exclusive contract.

I'd expect their VZW division is carrying the company.. When they are charging 20 cents PER text message for no-plan customers is just highway robbery. I remember reading how much it costs per MB of data was huge!

DSL is slow, FIOS is much better

Why would I get DSL when the fastest tier is 3mb? I had Verizon for home phone service and with the Caller ID, Call Waiting, Long Distance, etc... that we wanted, the bill was about $60 a month. With Comcast I have the triple play bundle and the phone with all of those features (plus web access) is $33 a month (will be $39 a month) which is cheaper. Plus Comcast HSI with Powerboost is MUCH FASTER than crappy DSL.

BUT on the flipside, if Verizon invested in a FIOS network in Berks County, PA, I would go with them. Verizon knows they need to spend money to make money. Build it and we will come. I'd love to have 100 HD channels and Verizon Fios TV, plus sustaned up and downstream speeds. Multi Room DVR, advanced DVR software with PC connectivity, reliable service and all in a triple play bundle. Verizon do you hear me? Build it and I will come!

Re: DSL is slow, FIOS is much better

Verizon now has 7.1mb for $37.99 a month (with a 2 year contract). 7 megs is more than enough for most people, unless of course they are downloading extremely large files on a regular occasion. Also you have to keep in mind, that is an uncapped dedicated line. My friend who has Comcast gets near dial-up speeds between 6pm-Midnight when the kiddies are online. I'd rather stick with my 7 meg DSL connection that I know I can do just about anything I want with.

Pretty much, you can use your 3 Mbps with Verizon as much as you want. With Comcast, you start getting in trouble if your usage starts to average more than about 750 Kbps.

Well, to each his own. I will continue to order DSL at $13 a month, versus Fios at $48/month. We have no need for even 3Mbps. To date, I haven't seen performance by any cable company that would convince me to rely on them for phone service or internet.

I would think Verizon has to be either eating something or subsidizing this with some other monies cause I can't see how they can afford to keep the power on and maintain your line for $13/mo unless their not planning on making any profit. If I am right then your time with this rate may be limited.

Verizon nerds! Question

What if I want to go hard core and tell the verizon sales people I have a fiber optic nic card in my pc.

Could I possibly be able to still use it and bypass all that extra junk that they might try and rent to me?

Anecdotely

90% of the DSL I take out in the CO are customers moving to Fios.

pfilg

@comcast.net

who cares

Verizon blows, it's even funnier that they blatantly lie about being the biggest wireless carrier in their report.

After they screwed me over 3 times while I was a wireless and DSL customer I'll never use their services ever again, ever. Not even FiOS. I'm happy with Comcast now, and I'll be happy with U-Verse when I move next year.

SprintWimaxLuvr

@sigmanet.com

Re: who cares

AT&T has the most total subs, but Verizon Wireless has the most customers who sign up with them directly and like all telcos they'll use some form of SPIN to bolster up appearances.

Over 10 million of AT&T's headcount actually subscribe to America Movil (that's Tracfone to those who don't know).

VZW likes to brag about this detail since it proves that more wireless users in the US are loyal to their brand. Even though Tracfone uses AT&T's network for the majority of its service area, their customers don't know this.

It's just bragging rights. Nothing to get all hot and bothered over.

no dsl no fiber

Just curious if they have any numbers on how many homes they serve with just POTS and thats it... No DSL no fiber no nothing... I know my household is one of em... I'm still curious as to why I have them for POTS. OH WAIT I KNOW WHY THEY LOCKED IN MY TELE NUMBER. So if I wanted to switch I cant keep my number. And having the same number for 10+ years I'm not going to switch but I'm half tempted since it takes them a week+ to come out and fix my copper when it goes down. :-O
