Verizon Offering 3 Mbps FiOS
As Both Retention Offer and DSL Upgrade Path
by Karl Bode Friday 15-Jul-2011 tags: prices · business · bandwidth · consumers
User elray See Profile writes in to note that he noticed that Verizon is now offering select users 3 Mbps downstream and 1 Mbps upstream FiOS service for just $20 a month. For years cable operators have offered "lite" tiers to users who call up to cancel as a retention offer, and it appears that Verizon's following suit here. "We introduced the 3 Mpbs offer in late spring," Verizon's Bob Elek confirms to Broadband Reports adding that they're also offering it as a gateway migration offer for DSL users. "We're using the 3 Mbps FiOS Internet offer principally to migrate our 1 mbps High Speed Internet (DSL) customers and as a retention offer." While the offer may not appeal to more mainstream users who know what the FiOS network is capable of, it's potentially appealing to light users who don't need blistering speed.

Lite?

Wow, I remember ISPs used to offer 512kbps "lite" offerings for $20/month to both get people of dial-up, and to retain customers who just didn't feel like paying $50+/month was worth the expense. I just upgraded from 3M to 5M a couple months ago.

Re: Lite?

ATT has 6 meg/768k DSL for $19.99 with 1 yr contract. Unfortunately they put an increadibly low 150GB cap with $10 per 50 GB after that so ATT is worthless now. 150GB a month is like the equivalent of what you can download with a 500 kbps connection a month.
When I signed up they had no caps, if any other provider comes along with no caps or if ATT tries to charge me $10 per 50GB, I will switch.

Re: Lite?

Still good deal if u live not far from grandparents and they don't use and pay for Internet but have dsl available. Naked dsl is only $5 more they charge unless they got other bs fees like "active line". Then u get it and pay under your name, combined with your wireless bill u can get maybe $5 bundle discount. Worth it when u drop by for weekend every week or two weeks or. $150 gb instead wing limited to 4gb under smartpone tethering plan.

Damn, that's one sweet deal compared to what I pay.

I have 15/2 service from the local cableco. I pay $55 a month- and have a 50 GB cap, which used to be an 80 GB cap... :-(

Maybe for you it's a bad deal, but for some of us it's a lot better than what we have, or can get, where we live.

Just saying...

It was certainly a great deal until they started with the capping bullshit.

It won't pay off VZ's massive fiber investment but...

3/1 for $20 is a better deal than i've seen from any other ISP in the US, so good on 'em. Maybe it'll get DSL-ites to upgrade to something that costs VZ less to maintain, and is all around better anyway.

It doesn't need to...YET.
THIS is phase 2, in phase 1 you got the high value "want it all" customer, then you draw in the reluctant to change, and eventually you force the last few off the copper.
THEN you've got a monopoly on the telco service.

The biggest capital was already expended in getting the fiber out in to the neighborhoods. It just sitting there doesn't return anything for those that stay with copper. Plus, getting them switched over to FiOS also opens up the possibility for video service as well.

Re: It won't pay off VZ's massive fiber investment but...

The biggest capital (and value) is in establishing and HOLDING the RoW, plus installing the pathway (conduit).
pulling copper, fiber or quantum strings, as needed is fairly easy after that.

The time and cost of that last half mile i.e. VRAD to homes, is far more expensive then most believe, even when things go perfectly (almost never) reaching each house WITHOUT disrupting the existing regulated plant is one of the most expensive parts of any network.
study carefully Verizon's experience... yes they intended to dump Hawaii, and probably upper new england ME,VT,NH., but much of the rest (now frontier) they really thought they could do, on the initial push, but that didn't work out that way.

'Now, if they would just build it all out a bit more'

They might actually get a few more people to sign up. I know a lot of dishes came down when FIOS came through my neighborhood. Adelphia never upgraded, Comcast tried to I think, but charges an Arm and a Leg, so every roof in the development seemed to have a Dish or DirecTV receiver connected to it. And now, poof, all gone.
One of these I might actually get around to pulling mine down too, but it's bolted to the chimney and I'm not going back up there.

Same state as you, same price. I have 3/1 from Earthlink for $39 and was interested in this to get the same speed (with a huge upgrade potential) for the same price, but that pop-up window killed that idea real quick.

You may need to go deeper in the order process to see your actual price. Just don't submit the order. You can also call and have a CSR price it for you, without ordering.

FIOS customers have been telling Verizon to offer this for 6 years. Now that they have mostly drawn out the easy demand, they're looking for higher penetration percentages.

Then they should consider lowering the price

for standard dsl as well, I'm paying $40 for a dry loop 3/768, with no choice, because my building has no cable tv, 34 direct tv dishes on the roof, incredible considering I live just across from lower manhattan, in williamsburg brooklyn

I'm paying $45 a month for 3/768 DSL dry. They refuse to lower it unless I bundle with POTS.

Still need lan line

They only give you the price if you get a lan line with it.

I'm on the 25/25 plan... they claim I'll pay -$5/mo to move down to the 15/5 plan or -$5/mo to move down to the 3/1 plan...

So looks like via the web they are keeping the 3/1 plan equal to the cost of the 15/5 plan, I guess when you call them up and claim you'll cancel is when they will offer the lower price...

Depends on how "local" you want to consider the last kilometer/mile (Well, actually, it should be upcased, as in LAN)...

no, just kidding, definitely missing the "d"

As long as they keep it unlimited

Verizon will remain the only true major ISP out there.
The plan would be perfect for cord cutters on the budget.

$20 for the first year

unfortunately it's only $20 for the first year then has a huge increase after 12 months. My girlfriend checked into it, but with the big increase after 12 months it makes no sense for her to switch from her $20 DSL line until Verizon forces everyone in the area to fiber.

?

So, Verizon is going to offer this stand-alone... WITHOUT a phone line or basic Video/TV? Not sure the retention angle, where are these customers going actually? Wireless (hahaha), HIjack the neighbor's wifi?

IMO, it should be 5-7 megabit symmetric for $20, 15/15 for $29.95. Many multimedia websites can push around 10 megabits these days without breaking a sweat (while the data loads or streams, ie youtube in HD).

Vegas price

I'll chime in here, I pay 34.99 for 3/412 from Cox, Centrylink wants 29.99+a bunch of F@*ck you taxes so its probaly around $35/mth for 3/? DSL. Their using ADSL2+ modems and allow BYOD but say "no support it you don't rent our modem" supposedly this 29.99 plan is for what ever is available to your address up to 10 Meg! SO it you live in richville (I'm looking at you Alliante and Summerlin) you can get this level for the same price as i would pay for 3meg service.
Their also yacking about their tv service (prism tv)and even send me a direct to mail glossy postcard, so i go to the office, guess what....still not avail at my address.
It would be great to see Verizon buy out centrylink in Vegas and throw down some fios.
I tryed to find a alternate carrier that offers DSL and its like tring to find a ghost!
