Verizon LTE Expands
One New Market, Four Expansions
by Karl Bode Thursday 16-Feb-2012 tags: coverage · wireless · bandwidth · Verizon · wireless · cellular
Keeping pace with AT&T's freshly-announced new LTE markets, Verizon has a few new market announcements of their own. According to a Verizon press release, they're expanding LTE network coverage in Little Rock, Arkansas; Rapid City, South Dakota; Clarksville, Tennessee; and San Antonio, Texas. The company is also turning on LTE for the first time in Cookeville, Tennessee. With this latest launch, Verizon says they now offer LTE service in 196 markets, which are broken down with Verizon's latest LTE availability map (pdf).

Definitely agree. Kansas City has 4G now and that was back in November I believe.

One tower in a downtown area should not constitute having a market lit.

No it's not. Showing Cookville which was not showing 2 days ago. Also showing Clarksville 4G going all the way past Dover almost to the TN river which is wasn't doing the other day.

Who is stupid enough to look at that instead of the actual coverage map on the verizon site?

How are they false advertising? each company admits there are places they don't cover and give you maps as well

they also state that even though the map may show coverage that it is not always true due to things out of their control. They can not be sued.

they provide service where they have coverage, that is made clear.
they make no promises about coverage, no liability.

You ever read your subscriber agreement? All of them clearly state that cellular phone service is radio based and that technical issues beyond the carrier's control could render the service useless. No warranty expressed or implied, yadda yadda yadda.

To be blunt. If it don't work, you're SOL.....

How about expanding outside Scranton, PA?

They installed LTE antennas on the towers near me 10-12 months ago, and even put up a brand new tower last April. None of it is turned on yet. I can only assume they're struggling getting fiber to some of the cell sites.

Re: How about expanding outside Scranton, PA?

that's when they call in a partner such as the MSOs who already have it close by.

But just because its been there for 10 months maybe its not ready for customers and still in testing, etc.

Re: How about expanding outside Scranton, PA?

Where their 4G is now, the speeds aren't even that great. For a while they were maybe 10mbps, maybe 6 or 7mbps. It wasn't anything special. I think Scranton was one of their rushed-to-market attempts at LTE. I suppose it's within their scope of "5-12mbps" but still unimpressive for all the hype.

I just ran a speedtest using my Droid Bionic 4G LTE (inside my house)
and I just got 15 megs down 6 megs up.

It is extremely fast.

For some reason

For some reason I am only getting 0.5 mbps on my Pantech UML 290L USB modem when I do speed tests but I get 4 Mbps upload when I do speed tests with the above mentioned device plugged into my MacBook Pro.

Re: For some reason

That Pantech UML290 USB modem was a great modem on LTE but absolutly horrible on 3g and got so frustrated with it I took a hammer to it. Now using a Samsung hotspot and it pretty much does the same thing. Great on LTE horrible on 3g but not as noticable. It might last till I see LTE in my area. But as far as LTE speeds Most of my downloads are well over 15 Mbps down and 6-10 Mbps up.

Winter slowing deployment?

It seemed like Verizon was deploying a batch of 15 cities a month during the warmer months... we went like 3 months without any announcements.

I used to be a Sprint customer and then switched to Verizon Dec 3rd.. Deployment has all but halted since then.
