Not official, but faster tier does seem imminent...
(old news - 09:30AM Tuesday Dec 11 2007)
tags: dsl · business · bandwidth · telco · Verizon Online DSL
Yesterday we mentioned that users in some Verizon territories were starting to see a 7Mbps residential tier being made available to new customers, but only in some eastern states. At the moment, the fastest option available to most DSL users out of the range of FiOS is 3Mbps -- unless users sign up for a 7Mbps business-class line.

While the telco is usually tight-lipped about new deployment plans, they did tell us that "we’ll be making an announcement about this at some point." They're not ready to chat about it in detail on the record yet; our guess is it's in testing and you should see broader deployment sometime next year.

Faster Technologies

Hopefully, although unlikely, it would be nice to see Verizon deploy faster ADSL2+ lines, as it seems they are starting to use the protocols in some areas already with the same speeds as most of their ADSL lines. It would be a nice gap-bridge to tide over DSL users until some of these more remote areas are lucky enough to be reached by the Fios service.

Re: Faster Technologies

I am using Verizon lines from CO to home but Cavalier DSL to get speeds like this
(10 mbps down and 903 kbps up. I only get 2.8mbps down and 768 kbps up with Verizon). Standalone DSL here is $34.95 with Verizon and $39.95 with Cavalier (3X the speed for $5). Just have to watch the billing and customer support with Cavalier like a hawk. But many have the same issues with Verizon (including me).

Re: Faster Technologies

Anyone know a good reason why Verizon does this stuff.

I live close enough to my RT to cook my dinner on it, but all they'll give me is 3 MBS down.

What gives?

Higher speeds mean more trouble and the sticky tube from the CO to the ISP will have to be made less sticky.

I forgot to mention that I am 5000 feet from the CO and get 10mbps. I also am using a Zoom X6 adsl wireless modem/router which further bumps up the speed. The Cavalier tech I met lives very close to his CO and gets 13mbps down. But I do see that the average for Cavalier on dslreports is lower. DSL reports does not yet resolve my IP address correctly to Cavalier (unlike speed test.net) so my results don't impact the dslreports average for Cavalier.

OK

That's great, but it took them forever to even service my area with DSL... and it's only 1.5mb at that. I don't have much hope that this will be available to me anyway.

anyone know if there is faster upload as part of the package? I'd love to send out faster than 768.

Re: faster upload?

Yeah same here. I just signed up for 3MBps DSL, I passed on 8Mbit Comcast because Comcast only had 384 upload.

Good luck, especially if you're running standard dmt/ADSL2+. The sync cap on dmt/ADSL2+ is 1Mbit, and you won't get that after overhead. Also, a lot of CPEs/modems will only sync at 896K max. I believe Annex M is supposedly something that may help/change this, but, as with any DSL, highly distance sensitive. And, not too many providers are running Annex M ADSL2+ Excuse me if I got some of that wrong, I'm just going from memory here. All I know that is the max you'll be able to get is around 768-850 after overhead, anyhow. And that's only if your Rx rate is sync'd at 1Mbps. Verizon doesn't utilize Annex M. I'm pretty certain they're scrapping further DSL innovation, to make way for FiOS, which makes complete sense.

It would be nice if

It did come to pass as I'm paying about 75$ per month at home for the 7.1/768 speed from verizon.

Did they offer the increased speed for more money or did you have to dig it out of them?
