Verizon: FiOS Reaches 54% Of NYC
On track to goal to reach 100% of city by 2014
As part of their franchise agreement with New York City, Verizon was required to deploy FiOS services to every home in New York City by 2014 -- though the agreement allows Verizon lawyers to wiggle over, under and around those obligations should Verizon not see the kind of service uptake they'd like. According to Verizon, they've now passed about 1.8 million homes and businesses, or 58% of the roughly 3.1 million households in New York City. Verizon says they're ahead of their agreement to pass 54% of NYC premises by the end of this year. Of course while Verizon is moving forward with FiOS deployment in several cities where they've signed franchise agreements, they've frozen overall FiOS expansion elsewhere.

meanwhile, NOVA languishes...

You'd think 30 miles outside of DC would get FIOS, but no.

You'd think 1 mile outside SA city limits would get cable or DSL, but no.

We get it here. Not quite 30 miles but around 25 miles from DC.

There's Fios all around DC, just not IN DC. It's pretty hit or miss. There's Fios in parts of Fairfax, Wood Bridge, Dodge City, Manassas, and many places in MD. It's just the luck of the draw, I guess...

FiOS is available in parts of D.C., much of northern Virginia and the Maryland burbs, too.

30 miles outside of DC? Are you serious? 30 miles outside of NYC can easily be the boonies.

You've never heard of the Beltway Baronial. Its a 2 mile drive to get out of your gated subdivision.

At least they can get standalone internet

for no extra charges. Att makes it very hard, either pay $150 installation or bundle with TV.

As long time ATT customer who had with them Yahoo DSL for 3-4 years, has cellular service since 2008 and his household even still uses POTS, I got no other offer. As the result, I moved to Comcast. And guess what I am happy with them in my area.

They probably know that and no longer honor this.

Either way I'll wait at least until comcast's promotional monthly price expires.

5.5 years......

5.5 years of the fiber here in comcrap land.

Will never use copper again, trying to switch to fios tv for the triple play savings, but comcrap keeps us on some super low deal, probably to keep us from going 100% vz, but i'm getting tired of tiling and mismatched audio/video, as well as their dubious anti-fios and "xfinity" advertising.

If i ever move to nyc, (somewhat likely) i'm glad that it will be there waiting for me.

false advertising

Veriizon has billboards suggesting people sign up for FIOS. Yet nobody in populated neighborhoods can get it. They need to stop advertising the service and just use the money to roll it out. Lots of people want FIOS bad here and are ready to switch.

robo & commissioned sales calls

In other news, cablevision and time warner "robo calls" and commissioned sales reps trying to woo customers away from symmetric broadband, and competitive triple play deals kick into overdrive. Obviously Verizon IS making a dent in the NYC market and it's hurting the competition. So, when the annoying calls to switch back come.. it better be a sweet deal... I personally dont' think 5 megabits upload is worth it.. they both can do better.

Both cable companies lost ALOT of customers over their poor haggling strategy with content providers. Now are trying to win them back 'on the cheap'-- don't be apathetic and bite, just yet.. force the cable companies to improve services. Then maybe, just maybe that will get Comcast subscribers to pluck up some courage to tell their service provider to improve service-- or else cancel the account.

54% my butt

FiOS is available a block away from me, but my block doesn't have it. It'd been 1.5 years since my friend 1 block away got it. The heck is taking so long for Verizon to wire to my block? -_-;;

54% in verizon bs. please i live in manhattan and I haven't seen anything not even 10 blocks away from me. sure they have wired many buildings, but as many to claims 54% in nyc. Maybe 54% IN QUEENS NY, but In manhattan maybe only 15% is wired. not a single old building is wired with fios, however all new recently buildings are wired.

Verizon Bought by Frontier

Wasn't Verizon bought by Frontier?

July 1, 2010, 4:09 pm EDT
STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) -- Frontier Communications Corp. closed its $5.3 billion acquisition of phone lines in 14 states belonging to Verizon Communications Inc., the company said Thursday.

Re: Verizon Bought by Frontier

Not necessarily; that just means that they've bought the phone lines. Not the company.

Oh, and FiOS is only available in the southwest corner of the state. Rest of CT has been high and dry for about 5 year.

Absolutely not. Verizon sold off several states' phone lines (some with FiOS) to Frontier. It's completely different than Frontier BUYING Verizon.

I'm sure that the wiring is going from south to north in the borough of Brooklyn. Maybe some techs can explain where the rollout trucks are wiring currently...

Please come...

A friend of mine live in the same area with me, just on another side, and he already got fios in the first big snow in last winter.
Now another winter is coming soon, and I am STILL waiting.
Just saw a fios truck (not the cable one) a block from my home, but no one is inside, so cannot ask for any info

It is stupid for verizon to keep advertising fios, but still a large portion of household in the city cannot get it yet. Those funny ads mean nothing to us...
