Verizon FIOS GPON in Nine StatesNew installs in those states now all GPON ( old news - 09:07AM Wednesday Jan 09 2008) tags: Fiber · business · bandwidth · telco · networking · Verizon FIOSTipped by traitors Verizon has long told us they'll eventually migrate their FiOS network from BPON to GPON (Gigabit Passive Optical Network) fiber technology. Their current BPON technology splits 622Mbps downstream and 155Mbps upstream among 32 users. GPON technology will allow them to offer 2.4Gbps downstream and 1.2Gbps upstream among 32-64 users (eliminating ATM, making it also more efficient). The company has been testing the technology in a number of communities, with some employees having 100Mbps access. According to Verizon, they've initially focused on California, Maryland, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Pennsylvania, Virginia and Texas. They're now saying GPON deployment will ramp up substantially in 2008, and all new installs in those States will be GPON. You likely won't see any new speeds at first, as the upgrades are a way to "future proof" the network. 100Mbps connectivity may emerge eventually, but even Verizon admits that such a speed is more a marketing weapon than anything else at this point. When it is deployed, Verizon says limited demand will have them employing the over-subscription model. "Both B-PON and now G-PON give us all the headroom we need to continue evolving our products to meet growing customer demand for more bandwidth, both downstream and upstream," says Verizon Mark Wegleitner, Verizon Telecom's senior vice president-technology. "However, moving to technologies like G-PON helps ensure that we stay ahead of the competition."The folks over at the Verizon Policy Blog continue to shrug off Comcast's promise of 160Mbps connectivity, given GPON upgrades theoretically allow them to offer speeds up to 400Mbps. As we mentioned yesterday, Verizon also has the initial advantage that pre-certification DOCSIS 3.0 gear can't yet offer faster upstream tiers, which means that symmetrical FiOS is a real competitive boon for the folks at Verizon for the next few years. I think his point was, unless the band-end (back haul) infrastructure is upgraded, the last mile upgrades don't matter. For pure internet speed anyway.
Luckily, it seems like Verizon has been pretty good about upgrading their back hauls if necessary, or at least planning for a reasonable over subscription ratio.

But I can download 5 large files simultaneously at 3 Mbps. Is it only Microsoft's site, or is that for all distant sites? Have you tried something like apple.com that also has large files available from the left coast? its not just your download that makes it fast, you could have a 1,000,000meg's down and still receive the same. the person your downloading from needs a fast upload connection for you to get a fast download, and also u have the distance and all that technical BS to.

| Re: The tubes are full!! You guys missed my point entirely. I was limited to a 3Mbps download speed per file by Microsoft, but I was able to download multiple files from Microsoft, each at 3Mbps. Obviously the pipe between Microsoft and myself was wide enough, and Microsoft may have been speed limiting individual downloads. It's just an example where greater bandwidth is useful for multiple simultaneous connections. | |

Just because your driveway is really, really wide doesn't mean you can get to the city any faster during rush hour. The analogy with Fios is more so: Just because your driveway, neighborhood streets, and county roads are really really wide, doesn't mean you can get to the city in another jurisdiction any faster during rush hour.
Within Verizon's network, whether it's last mile, regonal, or long haul, they designed it from the ground up.
If we were talking about other network technologies, that oversubscribe, advertise higher rates then available, use vines and sand to throttle traffic, nontransparent caps, or share last mile connections amongst 250 to 500 people... Well, then I'd totally follow your analogy. I'd probably add one more thing about the pavement being pitted or something

I'm 2 miles north of you in PA, and I STILL can't get Fios.
Half the town has it, the other half doesn't. All the conduit was installed 6 months ago, and still nothing.
Verizon blames "equipment delays" for the lack of deployment.

The Francis reference is from the movie "Stripes".

Would be my plan with 100/100 in testing. But I do think that it's stupid to oversubscribe something like 100/100, especially if you pay a premium price and expect to use the service.

| 4 months too late, not proactive at all... I've been reading about Verizon's GPON transition since before Verizon started to offer FiOS in Brooklyn, NY in August. I'm one of the few customers that signed up immediately when it became available. There are perhaps 6 FiOS cusomers on my entire upscale residential block (I'm in Bergen Beach - a neighborhood with many amazing homes). Since installation I've been scratching my head as to why they didn't deply GPON, and now wondering why people are congratulating them now for being proactive. Brooklyn, NY has GOT to be the most densely populated area that Verizon has deployed FiOS to date (and it will remain so until Manhattan is deployed). I don't think it was proactive, but rather reactive to cable competition's continual domination. I can't wait to hear whether the Ave. R CO which is being wired as I type will have customers using GPON ONT's or not - I bet they're going to be BPON since the CO was probably equipped before this anouncement. | |

| Re: 4 months too late, not proactive at all... Think they've been testing the technology for some time, and probably waiting for equipment to be standardized and manufactured. Of course, they could have stopped all FiOS design and installation while waiting for the latest upgrades, making you wait even longer.
The upgrade from BPON to GPON will be soon. Meanwhile, enjoy what you are gonna get.

@verizon.net
| GPon vs. BPon If they stick with 32 houses/fiber then its 75/37.5 before they even have to think of oversubscribing
At splt 64 its 37.5/18.75 again BEFORE oversubscribing....
with even 5:1 oversubscribing (at 64 split) they could do
187/93.75
So yeah 100/100 is pretty easy to do with Gpon and 200/200 (with 32 split) are both realistic....

| Fastest in the marketplace.. How is there really going to be any incentive for Verizon to throw out new higher speeds without anything new from the competition?
GPON will be essential if Verizon plans on offering symmetric tiers going forward beyond 30mbit. This is what Docsis 3 threatens to be capable of.. but no isp is committing to faster internet speeds just yet..
