story category Verizon Expands 7Mbps DSL Availability
9.7 million households in 21 States and DC
08:53AM Wednesday May 20 2009 by Karl Bode
tags: dsl · prices · business · consumers · Verizon Online DSL
Perhaps to offset the fact that they just announced they'll be selling a huge swath of rural customers they couldn't be bothered to upgrade, Verizon announced this morning that they've continued to expand availability of their 7Mbps DSL service. According to the telco, by July, 9.7 million households in parts of 21 states and the District of Columbia will be able to order the faster DSL service -- quite a jump from the 400,000 or so users who could get the tier when our users were the first to spot it back in December of 2007. New users who sign a two-year contract pay get 7.1 Mbps/384 Kbps 768kbps (Verizon's press release is wrong) for $37.99 per month (plus the usual fees and unfees).

Verizon has 768kbps on the upload, not 384kbps. The 384kbps speed is for the 1.5Mbps and the 1Mbps provisioning.

There is no 7.1/384 DSL tier - Karl, your article is wrong.

Yes. The press release was wrong. Verizon reached out with a correction.

Not a good deal.

Considering that I have 12 Mbps/2 Mbps for $33 per month from Comcast with a 2 year contract, that's not a very good deal from Verizon. Especially since I didn't even have to be a new customer to get it.

Verizon has been very heavily advertising DSL in my area. Here's a tip Verizon, why don't you deploy FIOS in my area. Then maybe we'll talk.

I've never been throttled by Comcast and I've never come close to the 250 GB cap, even when downloading a number of HD movies, so for me it's a non-issue.

The throttling and the 250GB cap have nothing to do with each other, one is to control peak usage in the afternoon, the other is to control P2Pers/bulk transfer/streaming blu-ray.

I never said they did, I was simply responding to a post saying stating that Comcast has limits and Verizon does not.

Re: Not a good deal.

Very true, if you aren't affected by Comcast traffic management, then they are a good deal. But if you happen to be a user than is, even a dirt cheap $33 price isn't a "deal".

Re: Not a good deal.

This depends, I have Comcast internet with Vonage phone and Directv. What does Verizon charge for the 7 MB internet stand alone service? Comcast, while having higher speeds, charges me around $60 per month.

$37.99 plus junk fees for 7Mb dry loop
»news.prnewswire.com/DisplayRelea···3&EDATE=

And the price is locked in for as long as you have the service.

quote:
New customers who sign a two-year agreement for Verizon's stand-alone, up to 7.1 Mbps/384 Kbps (kilobits per second) HSI service, based on digital subscriber line technology, can lock in a rate of $37.99 per month, which is guaranteed for as long as they keep the service.
They say 384 up in this press release but in my area it is 768 up.

I just received $29.99 for 2 years (no TV or phone) thru Charter, this is 5down/1up. I am 18k feet from the CO, Verizon I love your internet but you need to bring me FIOS! Otherwise I am stuck with Charter, yuch, well it might be getting better then they are going bankrupt.

no thanks but where is FIOS, this is the nation's capital

I live in the heart of DC and guess what? No 7.1Mbps down for $37.99 available. The best they do on my block is 5Mbps down for $42.99 month.

Where is my FIOS? This is the nation's capital and I can't get fiber?

So many better options. If you can, get RCN. Otherwise, COVAD ADSL2+.

If you look at my reviews I did a review of Covad. Not a good choice.

Right now there is only one broadband choice in Washington: Comcast

Not sure where you live, but in my neck of the woods there's Comcast, RCN and, of course, Verizon. Sure, I'd like to have six choices, but three is probably better than what 90% of the country gets.

Fios is better than the rest. Oh, I have Comcast, btw. Had Fios... It was better. I hear horror stories about RCN.

Re: no thanks but where is FIOS, this is the nation's capital

Unfortunately, FiOS won't get to my 'hood until long after I've moved, I'm afraid.

I have RCN and haven't had any problems with them. I had Verizon DSL when I lived down in Chinatown, and while it was only 6 Mb compared to the 10 I get with RCN, the service was a lot more stable. I didn't have nearly the speed fluctuations I get with RCN.

I've never had Comcast but have heard enough to make me decide I don't want to chance doing business with them.

hey what is this 21 States and DC business?

I am offended by that subtitle. It should say 22 states. Or maybe 21 states and the future state of Columbia. Karl Bode, you need to be more sensitive and politically correct to the residents of the nation's capital. We already suffer taxation without representation and slow internet speeds (see my other post).

Yes I hope Verizon does better in our nation's capital city but don't get us started on what's wrong with a single city becoming a state, if you want to be part of a state see if you can get Maryland to take D.C. back.

Why is it wrong for 1 million people to have representation so that we can vote on issues of cell phones and broadband?

Maybe Penn should be absorbed and controlled by say New York or Virginia? How does that make you feel?

My point was that residents of the future state of Columbia have just as many concerns about broadband but have no voice and are treated as second class citizens.

Plus it is just rude to say "states" and, oh by the way you other "non-important non-state" D.C.

I'd be fine with PA and VA becoming a single large state although I don't know if West Virginia would mind joining us together.

Personally, I don't care if DC becomes a state, is absorbed back into Maryland or if they just stop levying federal taxes on us (DC certainly levies enough on us already!), but the current situation is exactly what started the Boston Tea Party and the American Revolution. That's a pretty ironic situation for the US capital to be in.

Good point about the federal taxes, Puerto Rico doesn't have representation either but they also don't pay federal taxes.

NO NO NO, we don't want the district back. The Peoples Republik of Maryland in its desire to emulate Kalifornia is in a deficit thanks to its illegal immigrant "magnet" policy and "Who wants to Tax a Millionaire" policies. We don't need no more stinkin' deadbeats.

No I am not joking. Maybe we should strip away statehood from Maryland and Virginia just to be fair to the people in D.C. that get stuck paying taxes and have no representation in Congress.

Wyoming has a smaller population than DC, and yet they have two senators and a congressman. Maybe they shouldn't be a state?

That was My experience with 7.1, It is last I looked 768K up, Not 384K up as 384K is for the 1M/384K DSL only.

Increasing 7Mbps coverage??

Funny, part of the reason I dropped DSL, in the first place, was that my 7Mbps connection dropped to 4Mbps. And, yes, it *had* been giving me nearly 7Mbps. They rerouted the loop and my speed dropped by half. Oddly, my bill didn't drop by a similar amount.

wait what?

OK i'm completely confused here, maybe someone can clear this up.

First we get an article about how verizon has just sold off a chunk of biz to Frontier. In my case Idaho was included in that, or at least the article stated it was included.

NOW we get an article about expanding DSL service to 7.1, and guess what state is listed..... IDAHO!?!?!

So my question to those in the know, Has my state been sold off to Frontier or not? I live in Post Falls, ID which is Northern idaho. Right next to Spokane, Wa about 15 minutes away.
