NYC and Philly soon to see launch?
(old news - 01:15PM Tuesday Aug 31 2004)
tags: wireless · bandwidth
While Verizon Wireless currently only offers EV-DO wireless broadband service in DC, San Diego, and Las Vegas, there's evidence that the company will soon launch the service in NYC and Philly. Endgadget floats rumors that some NYC customers are receiving signal with Philly close behind, while Gizmodo points to this mystery transmitter being wired in Grand Central Station (can anyone identify it?). The EV-DO service costs $80 a month and offers mobile speeds as high as 500kbps.

Add me onto that list.

I'm really happy with what I've seen from Verizon lately. Successful Fiber to the Premise up and running with deployments all over the country, 3mbit/768kbit rolled out in ex-BA and now this. Verizon is doing a great job at keeping us geeks happy this past week.

Fine. Tell me how I'm gonna attach fiber to my car while I drive from Atlanta to the the North Carolina mountains and stay online and I'll be your huckleberry...

Re: Verizon?

My thoughts exactly. Like other people I will only get excited when I can use it at my house. We always keep hearing about these large deployments and how they are coming soon. Yet they never seem to quite make it as wide as they lead the politicians to believe.

FIOS + EV-DO Bundle?

Sounds like a sweet pair to me! I wonder if VZ plans to offer bundled pricing.

Re: FIOS + EV-DO Bundle?

Not to get anyones hopes up or down, but I don't expect the 'overly' crowded markets to be connected to EV-DO at first. Similarly to AT&T's UTMS service (albeit faster), all EV-DO and UMTS services have targeted 'smaller' cities, and probably those that are easiest to upgrade first.

Yeah DC, NYC and Philly are just "smaller cities"

Re: FIOS + EV-DO Bundle?

If you check the links at the top of the page - its speculation - there's no official word from Verizon on it.
As usual, wait for an official statement.

San Diego, Las Vegas and DC don't add up to the population of NYC combined.

stats (2000) (city websites):
San Diego: 1.2 million
Las Vegas: 500000
Washington DC: 500000

NYC: 8 million
Philly: 1.5 million

Re: FIOS + EV-DO Bundle?

EV-DO's "Washington DC" coverage isn't just the DC city limits. It extends into the surrounding area, though I'm sure it's still not comparable to NYC's population.

Here's the map (from Oct '03):

It's been here for almost a year now, and we're a fairly over crowded area.

I think Fios and EV-DO would make a great pair. Fios isn't available to me (might be soon though). But I'd sign up for EV-DO today if it weren't so pricey (and if it didn't require a commitment). Even at the current terms, I'm still mulling over an EV-DO subscription, but a bundle price (and less commitment) would sure peak my interest.

Actually they've tagged $1 billion for EV-DO upgrades. I suppose they could then jump to EV-DV. Flash-OFDM looks more promising.

RNC Stuff

My guess is that transmitter in GCS it just adding additional capacity for the RNC and/or making areas underground have a better signal. They did similar stuff here in Boston for the DNC, i.e., Verizon parked mobile antenna's around the city to beef us signals and capacity.

Re: As usual

I'm a little confused about this thread. On one hand, there is the EV-DO rollout by the wireless company Verizon Wireless. On the other hand, there is discussion about fiber, presumably from the landline comany Verizon Communications. They are two different companies (although the wireless company is partly owned by the landline company).

Dont you think 80 is a bit steep for those speeds?

Re: As usual

It's not if it's the only service you can get (No cable/No DSL). I've called Verizon and begged them to get DSL to my house (Note, I prequalified on their website three times and placed 3 orders, they made me get a landline that I didnt want because my "address qualifies for DSL"). I, a paying customer, should not have to beg the only provider I have to choose from for service, it sucks. EVDO/National Access is pricey, but if it's all you can get, it's not too bad. Better than dial up and better than satellite.
