Entry level tier speed jumping from 768kbps to 1.5Mbps...
(old news - 09:13AM Tuesday Nov 11 2008)
tags: dsl · prices · business · bandwidth · telco · Verizon Online DSL
In order to help beat back cable and stem their DSL subscriber losses, Verizon recently updated their DSL bundle packages, adding several new options for the triple and double play. As part of that update, the company said they would be updating the speed of their entry level tier from 768 Kbps/128 to 1Mbps/384kbps. Some users in our forums note that Verizon is updating some 768kbps customers to 1.5Mbps or faster if your loop length is short enough. Customers eligible for the free upgrade should be getting postcards in the mail, according to this forum thread. All DSL markets are expected to be updated by the end of the month.

Re: What about 3M subscribers?

It would be nice if they rolled-back the $2/month rate increase we got a few months ago.

Re: What about 3M subscribers?

What would be nice is if those of us paying $24.99 for 1M/384K would get at least 1.5M for the same price.

If you go the Verizon Kiosk at your local Verizon Wireless store you can get the upgrade for $21.99

yeah, it would be nice to see a speed increase or a price reduction. a 'free' bump to 7mbps sure would be nice, but i'd settle for most any speed increase.

Re: What about 3M subscribers?

Waiting here in Illinois for some speed increase for 3M from Verizon . Just ran speedtest tonight, had 969/671. Usually around 2800/680.

My price is $33.99/month + taxes.

FIOS areas too?

Does this also apply to FIOS areas? My girfriend has the entry level DSL and she is in a FIOS area. Most of her neighbors have FIOS but I can't convince her to get it since the price increase more than she is willing to pay. So any increase, in the pathetically slow speed she has, would be welcome.

I am sure Verizon will be quick to send you a higher bill in the future as well.

I wish...

Hate to spam but 1.5/384 for $20 sounds really nice when it's FastPath...and 1.5/896 (rated, not profiled :/) is twice the price here. Gotta love Qwest...

Re: I wish...

I could go for it.
I have 8Mb/3Mb from Comcast but with a pending layoff I might have to downgrade, cut off cable because every dollar counts. Sorry speed freaks but if it comes to the worst-case scenario where I must decide between food, medicine, and broadband it easy to see what I might have to cut.

speed upgrades

I called verizon about 2 months ago for a speed upgrade from 768 to 1.5 but when i change speed tier they told me that i would see a price change on my next bill. When i open my bill next month that price stay the same.

Hope they don't auto-upgrade not everyone can get it

I hope they don't auto upgrade people because not everyone can get the faster speed. A friend of mine is borderline for service and can barely get 768/128 as it is. I have 1.5/384 and now that it is entry level, could I ask to pay entry level price instead of what I am paying now?

You should, give them a call and state your rationale for the request, the worst that could happen is that they may tell you to wait a month or two, it would be irrational if you were to be told that what you pay for the service now is what you will continue to pay in the future.

I'm not that far from the CO and Verizon has never been able to get DSL to work at my place at all, the last time that a tech was sent to hook up my next door neighbor earlier this year they couldn't get it to work either, the guy said that even though the sales people said that the service is available at our location, the lines physical distance was beyond the range needed for minimum requirements, I wanted it as a back up, no such luck.

7.1 Mbps DSL

It would be nice if they would get on the ball with the 7.1 Mbps speed tier. I was told it would be available months ago, and it still isn't. They sent me an email a month ago for an offer with that upgrade, and I still can't get it. It seems like it isn't available as widely as it sounds.

Will AT&T follow?

Does anyone think AT&T will follow suit and up their service?

Free speed upgrade

I'm right now still at the 768kbps/128kbps package. I called up billing last week and said that there was a 3Mbps/1.5Mbps package for me in my area that's 19.99 a month, what I'm currently paying right now. If this upgrade does come along by the end of the month, it'd be cool to see the 3Mbps speed pop into my line as I know I can handle it. The 1.5Mbps package/386kbps package would be cool to see as well.

And yay! I got a link to my thread in the homepage

umm yeaaaaa

i used to have the 768/128 - $14.95 package...that a few months ago when my contract expired went up to $19.95/mo... called them tonight they claim they could give me a new agreement at 14.95 for the 768/128 or the 1m/384 at $19.95... fyi I also have a verizon landline, so either way this is not dry loop pricing.

im not sure i want to sign another agreement since i use this as a backup to roadrunner (10down/384up), and when I do use it it disconnects or drops to probably low signal, I remember I had the 3 meg speeds and it used to drop alot so I'm wondering if I'm provisioned to a faster speed if I'd run into the same kind of issues and if it's even worthwhile at all to keep verizon dsl if even for a backup at all.

Re: umm yeaaaaa

If you really want, stop into the Verizon DSL forum and we can check the line out for you to see if it is a low signal.

1 Mbps sounds just right

768Kbps subscribers were given the option for a free upgrade to 1.5Mbps years ago. But because we're so far from the CO, 1.5Mbps service was unreliable and we had to get bumped back down to 768Kbps. 1Mbps might still be within the realm of possibility.

Who's Eligible?

I doubt my parents are, who are on a 768 / 128 Frame Relay connection in rural Oregon. Any thoughts?

Re: Who's Eligible?

It may be possible to get faster service. Quite a few people have downgraded to dialup then upgraded to dsl service on ATM which allows for faster service.

The only change with it is after dsl is disconnected, the line is changed from the frame relay equipment to ATM equipment which can get faster service.

It may be possible to call up VADI and have them change it from frame relay to ATM based dsl, which could be quicker.

With DSL...

With DSL they upgrade what they can when they can & as much as they can. With many people switching to fiber it gives the copper nodes more room to breathe. Expect more speed increases into the future.
