Verizon Clarifies Death of Grandfathered Unlimited Plans
Grandrathered Users Won't Get Subsidized Devices
by Karl Bode Friday 18-May-2012 tags: prices · business · wireless · wireless
Verizon Wireless CFO Fran Shammo earlier this week stated that the company would be killing off unlimited data plans for users who were grandfathered after the company stopped selling unlimited data back in 2010. According to Shammo, the company is going to force many of those users on 3G to move to upcoming shared data plans if they want to migrate to LTE. After the negative press Shammo's comments generated, Verizon circulated a statement to the press promising that the phase out of these grandfathered unlimited plans will be a slow affair, and largely dependent on when and if these users wan't to upgrade to new subsidized LTE devices. According to Verizon Wireless:

•Customers will not be automatically moved to new shared data plans. If a 3G or 4G smartphone customer is on an unlimited plan now and they do not want to change their plan, they will not have to do so.
•When we introduce our new shared data plans, Unlimited Data will no longer be available to customers when purchasing handsets at discounted pricing.
•Customers who purchase phones at full retail price and are on an unlimited smartphone data plan will be able to keep that plan.
•The same pricing and policies will be applied to all 3G and 4GLTE smartphones.

Got rid of my MiFi

Decided today that my bill was too high so I canceled my MiFi, face the ETF, and am going to use the Mobile Hotspot feature on my iPhone 4. They let me keep my unlimited data and just added the mobile hotspot feature to my phone for an extra $20 per month. So after paying the prorated ETF of $145, I'll shave $30 off of my bill as I removed the MiFi ($50) and added the hotspot tethering to my phone ($20). Downsides are that I'll lose 4G until a 4G iPhone comes out and I'll only get 2 GB per month on the tethering side of the data plan.

Too bad you were not grandfathered in on the unlimited data for tethering.

That must have been years ago that they offered unlimited tethering. I was a Verizon Wireless customer from 2001-2004 then Cingular/AT&T from 2004-2011 and back to Verizon from 2011 onwards. I remember when data was new, using the data feature on a dumb phone (old motorola V60c and T720 from the easy 2000's) cost $6.99 a month and using data counted against your minutes from the time you went into wireless web from the time you quit the app. I don't know if that was true but that is what I was told by a VZW rep. I also remember the Get it Now feature and using that counted against your minutes.

As for getting rid of the MiFi, data speeds will suffer but my wallet will thank me

I signed up for unlimited tethering last June or July right before they did away with it.

Glad I upgraded a month ago. I guess I will have Verizon for 2 more years then I will consider my options. I currently get a 19% discount because of my work so going to another provider will be hard but might be worth it.

actually it would have been that way anyway. You always lose those grandfathered deals if you upgrade at the promo rates or make changes to the plan that would change the data portion.

Until now (or whenever this new policy takes effect), they were letting people get new subsidized phones, even when upgrading from 3G to LTE, and still keep the unlimited data plan.

Re: finally

that is correct but that always runs out. The same applies for customers that are on the outdated plan of all unlimited for $45 that VZ offered a LOOOOOOONG time ago. Back around 2001. Customers were grandfathered in..And was left to upgrade with promos/discounts. And then it changed. Those customers that wanted a cheap upgrade lost the plan. Those who decided to pay full price for the device had no contract (and still don't) and get their grandfathered plan.

How about data cards?

Wonder if this applies to data cards? I'd totally move to a 4G data card from my unlimited 3G data card if I could keep unlimited.

So much...

So much for all of those waiting on the iPhone LTE for VzW.

Verizon, if you want people to use your shiny new network, don't force your loyal customers into new plans "just because."

This is "great"

That's just great, no more subsidized phones for people on unlimited data plans unless you buy their crappy shared data plans... (I say crappy, but yet VZW hasn't even released them yet, I bet the lowest plan starts at a 5GB cap) well, looks like I finally have to look toward Sprint for 4G/cell service once my contract is up assuming that I can't renew the same contract and keep my unlimited data plan.

This plan isn't that bad because it appears there are loop holes to keep unlimited data once you want to upgrade, you just have to pay full price for the device, my only problem is all the devices I want are also $600 - $800 unsubsidized....... /sigh I guess I'll have to weigh my options once I get to that window, hopefully if the shared data plans have value (IE lowest plan starts at 10GB's) I can convince the other person on my plan to finally get a smartphone and then I'll be the one using all the data... Who knows, time will tell!

You left out the words "for now".

I can't remember which company it was, but some other company did the exact same thing in the recent past. They said that users with unlimited plans would be grandfathered in, but then a few months down the road, they announced that they were ending all unlimited plans. I wish I could remember what company it was.

Does anyone else know?

Yeah I have to agree, you may not actually be able to find them for the subsidized prices, but you can at least find them a lot cheaper than what you're finding brand new if they are slightly used. Either way we'll just have to see what the future holds, I have a feeling that really expensive phones are in my future, in fact I have a "new every 2" upgrade available right now on my plan, I've just been holding out for the quadcore phones, looks like I won't get to use it now

Unlimited is capped anyway

There is a 2 GIG ceiling to the unlimited anyway.

Once you hit the 2 gigs they put you on the heavy user list and your throttled for 2 months @ 25 kbs.

Its a scam either way

You must have Verizon confused with AT&T. Verizon does not throttle after 2GB of usage.

bogus

I am still waiting for some one to file a class action on the use of the hot spot......you already pay for data.........hot spot is a feature of the phone......so they want to charge you extra for the same data you are already paying for just because it is coming out of the hot spot.

does the power company charge you a fee every extension cord you use?

the cable industry tried to charge per outlet ya seen where that got them

A) You also get 2 GB of data extra and since their overages are $10 per GB it can be implied you're paying for the extra data.

B) They are moving to a data share plan in which you can use your data on multiple devices so the whole thing is moot anyways come summer.

The cable companies in most cases DID get get their extra outlet fees only its not called that. They simply got rid of analog cable ready and forced box rentals along with bi annual rate hikes. One way or the other they get what they want.

Throttle

Verizon admits throttling their top 3G users in their Network Optimization disclosure but it specifically says that LTE users will not be affected. It states that you will only be affected if you are:

A data customer on an unlimited data plan;
Have a 3G Verizon Wireless device (if you have a 4G LTE device you will not be impacted); and
Among the top 5% of data users in a given month.

Easy

I will just save a little more and not use Verizon's subsidies, I don't have to have a phone the day it comes out, So I will wait a bit and get the phones I want when they get cheaper..It will not be difficult to keep my unlimited data plan indefinitely...Well unless they change the rules again...LOL

Glad I got the LTE phone on sale when I did

Glad I jumped on the leap year day promo and bought the RAZR MAXX. I have 18 months before I can upgrade with a discount. I have no need for shared data. My other line is a flip phone with data blocked. I like that I can an extra fee to tether and my data is still unlimited (for now).

Who knows what the wireless landscape will look like in 18 months? Leaving isn't really an option because the competition is either the same price or the coverage is lousy.

Out of business

All I can say is I hope these huge companies like Verizon, AT&T, Comcast all run themselves right out of business!

Never have liked big conglomerates as they just seem to get dumber the bigger they get. Doesn't matter what type of business it is either.

wrong pathway..

verizon should have created LTE speed tiers and charged different rates, but still be unlimited. LTE has enormous capacity and could have served major metro markets well. billing by the byte still come back to BITE verizon in their earnings long-term given the significant gamble they've taken to upgrade LTE... just because a few million people have been desensitized to paying usage based billing data by AT&T & the crappy iphone doesn't mean Verizon can take that business model & run with it anywhere into declining earnings..

Re: wrong pathway..

iPhone isn't crappy unless u talk about old iPhone 1 and 3GS. The iOS version is very nice stable and fast. It's not sonwith android unless U get ics. Honeycomb is really crappy and slow and takes away user experience despite bigger screen or other features. Honeycomb on galaxy tab 1 which I have is really slow and I am about to upgrade to unofficial custom built ics and give up camera function cause I can't stand honeycomb!

Sprint - Slow but STILL UNLIMITED....

Sprint is the only major player advertising unlimited. Their coverage isn't nearly as good nor are the speeds. 4G roll out isn't top notch. However, I'd rather deal with slow than deal with overages.

If Sprint would STOP making stupid investment decisions and utilize the cash to maximize their network, a real chance exists to stomp Verizon, ATT, ETC with their ONE huge benefit... UNLIMITED

Their ill fated nexhell aquistion and the rebanding settlement and its $$$ BILLIONS to replace or reprogram equipment did them in. Hence why they now want to dump iDEN and its towers.

sprint is on life support if they make it past 2012, it will be a miracle.

I think this could wind up hurting cell phone manufacturers more than anyone-I at least will keep my Galaxy Nexus until it dies, then I'll switch to my backup Thunderbolt. There's really no incentive to upgrade if they are going to take away your unlimited data when you do so. That also means a lot of customers will go month to month when their contract is up, which makes it very difficult to budget for the future when you don't know if half your subscribers will be there 30 days from now.

Basic Phones going forward..

What I'm wondering is will a decent selection of basic phones be available going forward with VZ (or any of the major carriers for that matter)? Their basic handset selection is pathetic. They don't offer anything like the EnV3 or Octane anymore.

I hope they don't plan on forcing data down the throats of those happy with a talk and text phone. Data plan costs are just ridiculous as far as I'm concerned.
