| Speed boost? I have one that's even better:
Finally get around to offering 10 Mbps or better download speeds! I don't care about potential price hikes or being locked into a certain rate; I want download speeds that are progressive as technology advances.
I've had this 6 Mbps plan since roughly 2001 and AT&T's offerings have certainly stagnated. -- "War does not determine who is right; only who is left." - Bertrand Russell "Patriots always talk of dying for their country and never of killing for their country." - Bertrand Russell

if you spent sometime researching, you can quickly find out varsious versions of dsl can do 10mbps (look at uverse, what do you think gets the signal over the copper in the last leg to your house?) or even 50mpbs, probably higher.

| Re: Speed boost? Look friend, YOU chose to be rural. One of the things about being rural is none of the city-esk perks.
Broadband seems to be at or near the top of that list of things you get to forfeit. Moving to a place out of town and then trying to blame a service provider of being uncaring is... not right.
Common sense dictates that if you are out there, and want DSL or cable, and the providers aren't going to string it up for you - you get to move to a served area.
If you do not want higher speeds, they do offer DSL at 768k or 1.5mbps for kinda cheap. Once moved in, call AT&T, Verizon, or Embarq. They will be glad to help you get online.
Call them again and ask why they aren't serving your house and see what they tell you. Then, you can come back here and tell us all what they said. -- Think outside the Fox... Opera

from: dadkins
| Yah I have to agree with Dadkins. I went from a 3/716 DSL connection to a 6/2 broadband connection for about the same money (annually). Watching full TV episodes full screen actually works at my new connection. Every time I can do that, it's $4 I don't have to give to Pay-per-view.
The truth is I get around 8 down and 2.5 up if I connect to my router wirelessly. Those numbers jump to 12/2.7 on average (off peak). The other thing is that is just pass through. That is not a true indication of how fast I can browse. That has more to do with my browser's behavior and the servers I'm in communication with.
Even so, overall bandwidth speed does matter, so paying more for it is not a waste.

Different strokes for different folks.
Where the broadband industry has done a disservice is that they haven't educated the public as to the difference -- so the public only looks at one number.

1 edit | Re: How about ... a decent overall package? Their digital TV is very reliable in Valencia. In the 6 or so years of using digital cable, there was only one period of time after the TWC takeover where they had some trouble with the HD channels breaking up. From what you've described, you have a weak signal going to your cable box. A bad install that's never worked right isn't the same thing as being "not reliable". Not showing up for a service appointment to fix it is very poor service, however.
Their internet has definitely been a mess this month, which is probably due to upgrades. The "big outage" looks like it was planned maintenance gone wrong, and who knows whats been up with the DNS, but fortunately that's easy to work around. I've been getting calls non-stop about it from other people, too. It's not the norm. You can check my line monitor, prior to this month I went for an entire year with exactly one hiccup.
I'm not trying to make excuses for them, especially for missing your service appointment, there's NO good reason for that, but the system does work a lot better than what you've seen. Its taken AT&T a while to get my U-verse service working right, too.

What happens when everyone fishes in the same pond? Same effect with internet sales. Company's have pretty much secured the majority of there customer base.
I would think it would be logical for them to expand to new customer bases rather than drop prices to get people to switch from another network.

| I'm happey with 1.5 to 3 meg down.... Just give me 1 to 3 meg up to go with it....
Nothing more painful than sending some pics of my kids to my mother on someones killer 256k upload DSL...
Hey ATT... Instead of giving me $15 DSL, how about letting me pay you $75 to $100 for some 10 meg down, 1.5 meg up line bonded stuff...

| if you live in a place without dsl, cable, or fftn/fttp MOVE if you live in a place with dialup or satellite as your only options, you have got to move it, move it. you really are missing out.
the days of dialup are nostalgic.. but then again, you weren't moving 100+gb of websites, software, movies, and music and streaming content per month, per subscriber-- maybe 100mb per month.

| Re: if you live in a place without dsl, cable, or fftn/fttp MOVE yeah... moving isnt an option to some people, besides who wants to buy a house that doesn't have broadband access? no one.
and compared to the city.. RURAL KICKS ASS.
i wouldnt move to the city if my life depended on it. when i get older and leave my parents house ill move to a rural area that has dsl(2200ft down the street _), but never the city. heck, id rather spend all my money (part time job after school) on a t1 line to my house at 500$ a month instead of living in a city.
you really dont know how LUCKY you are to even have 1mbps.
*3.8 miles from the dslam(which should be operational within the next month or 2) but im still going to order dsl no matter what speed it may be.. even if it doesnt connect.*

Honestly, I could never live in a rural area, I hate driving and like everything to be nearby... but to each his own.

| Yea ... the people at the entrance to my father neighborhood 14 mile from Durham NC were smart. When Verizon needed to upgrade their phone switch they had to ask these peeps permission to do so cause the switch was on their land. They made a caveat that Verizon had to add a DSL Node on the phone switch and offer it to everyone around .... 14 miles from town, and you either have sat tv or a house antenna to get ok tv reception. Verizon got quite a few peeps from that deal and the people int he area are happy to at least have something better than DSL. | |
