From 400,000 lines in January to more than 3 million homes...
(old news - 01:33PM Thursday Jun 12 2008)
tags: coverage · business · Verizon Online DSL
While there's still many markets where Verizon's fastest speed remains just 3Mbps, the company e-mails me to note they've deployed their faster 7Mbps service to more than 3 million homes (you'll have to run the pre-qual tool to see if you qualify). When unveiled back in January, the service was only available to roughly 400 communities, or 400,000 qualified lines. The 7.1Mbps/768kbps tier costs $42.99 if you're willing to sign a one year contract and bundle local phone service. Verizon was also kind enough to provide me with this transcript (pdf) of recent conference, where COO Denny Strigl addressed FiOS expansion and promises to change the company's neglect of DSL (pages 13-15).

Verizon offering deals and availabilty check here

Verizon promo page for 7 mbps DSL:
»promo.verizon.com/7Mbps/default.···MC-SSD00

Check availability in your area here:
»www22.verizon.com/content/consum···lity.htm

P.S.> 7 mbps still not available in my area. Best is still 3000/768 DSL and no Fios.

you don't need the higher speeds anyway, right? higher speeds are only for bandwidth hogs and content pirates

The silly thing is that the availability website will not tell you if your existing DSL can be upgraded, it only tells you if the service is available on a new order. Since my local RT doesn't have any AVAILABLE ports, verizon reports that DSL (of any speed) isn't available in my area. However, I've had DSL for over a year.

Not to mention that for the most part, 7.1 is not available to people on RT's.

Pre qual tool stinks

I tried using the pre qual tool on Verizon's web site. I currently have the 3 MB DSL service.

It chugs along for about 15 seconds, and then proceeds to tell me Fios isn't available in my area.

Well, DUH! If Fios was available I wouldn't be trying to score 7MB DSL, thank you very much.

The page where the pre qual tool is mentions 7 MB for $42/Mo, and then sends me to a Fios pre qual tool.

Usually I'm pretty satisfied with Verizon, but on this one I've got to say they stink on ice....

At least they told you it wasn't available.
They told me "Great News, high speed internet is available and offered me 21x faster than dial-up and one tier up... just before one of their scripts crashed my browser,
I tell you they sure are making an impression on someone who really wants to leave Comcrap, and it ain't encouraging.

Your issue isn't with the Verizon web pages. I've been testing them with several different phone numbers of people I know to see if the pages and responses are correct and they are. You may have issues with either your PC or Comcast service.

Basically, if you're interested in finding out if you qualify for the service, you can call 1-800-567-6789 between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. EDT. That is the number on the landing pages to contact.

It is possible you may qualify for it. Try calling Verizon's Customer Advocacy Group at 1-800-483-7988.

Tell them you want to order the 7 Meg, except VZ website does not list it as available. Ask them to test the line for it. They generally will call you back if you leave a message.

Verizon 7Mbps service expands

I was finally able to order the service at the end of last month. I'd been checking to see if my second line qualified since my DSL service was running over it.

After numerous calls to Verizon where I was told my main line qualified I gave in and had my service transferred. And after that was done I checked the website out of curiosity for my second line and sure enough it now qualifies. Go figure .

Had it upgraded a few weeks back

Called a number of times since the news came out and a few weeks back they said I qualified. They sent a tech over to install a separate jack for the modem and they messed something up at the DSLAM or the CO where the modem would sync, but wouldn't get an IP so no Internet access. After about a week and hours to tech support & another visit from a tech they got it worked out. Had to use Comcast for that week and I don't want to go back to that throttled hell ever again.

It works great now, maxes out at about 6.5Mbps and the upload is more stable now.

not here

As I posted in the DSL forum a couple of hours ago, I was told 7.1 wasn't available here but 5/768K was. It also wouldn't allow him to do the upgrade, so he'd have to call back. He did, it was a glitch, 3.0 remains the top speed here (unless you want 7.1 business).

Stupid availabilty checker

I have the 1.5 package and I went to the 7 meg check availablity tool. Nice message(Good News! High Speed Internet Is Available.) Then it says I have to call to order. I knew I didn't qualify but I called anyone to see if maybe a remote terminal was installed lately and I didn't know it. Well guess what only the 1.5 package is available to me.

If I click a tool to check availability for 7 megs and it says good news then I should be able to get it. Another stupid move by Verizon.

I was told Verizon does not offer 7mbps out of any remote terminal. Maybe someone can confirm this...

Thats to get you to call so they have chance to upsell you on another[usually worthless] service.

Doesn't Verizon compensate for overhead in their stated speeds, though?

@verizon.com
Business 7.1 service has been available since 2007 in some communities, but not everywhere. If you want business DSL, you need to go to this page www.Verizon.com/businessdsl to determine if it's available in your community.

@verizon.com

7mbps Not Available Everywhere

At this point, only 3.4 million households qualify for the 7.1 Mbps High Speed Internet residential service. It is also distance sensitive like all DSL-enabled service is.

For speeds up to 3mbps the line that runs from a Verizon wire center to your home can't exceed about 16,000 feet or 3.2 miles typically.

For 7 mbps service the distance is 8,000 feet or about 1.6 miles.

Not! changing their neglect of DSL

If you read the report, the "DSL neglect" they're planning to change is DSL advertising. As for deployment, they pretty much said they don't plan on doing much:
quote:
We continue, to some degree, to roll DSL out
So it confirms what I suspected - those of us with no DSL at this point will in all probability stay that way. Even those of us only about 2500-3000 feet from a new, DSL-capable RT.

Note they said they only have 85% BB availablity in the Northest (even after dumping the Fairpoint lines). They're putting their CAPEX into FIOS.

Re: Not! changing their neglect of DSL

Did they mention how they are laying off the people that work in the corporate labs to make sure these architectures work before being deployed and then hiring account managers to find out why customers are canceling the service?

Quick question

So do you have to be home for this installation or is this something they do from the line outside?

If they come out to install a home run, you need to be home, as they will need inside access for running the dedicated line.
