East coast customers able to order
(old news - 09:13AM Monday Aug 30 2004)
tags: dsl · bandwidth
After months of guessing, it would appear some members of our Verizon forum are finally able to order Verizon's long promised 3Mbps/768kbps service. Users on the west coast are being told it's not available yet, while users on the east coast are being informed they need to be at least 11,000 feet from the CO. The tier is being offered at $44.95, with likely bundle discounts. Users served by remote terminals are being denied the upgrade.

I wish they would compete with Charter

It would be nice if they would compete with Charter, or offer even a lower price for this, I would change in a heartbeat.

Charter 3 meg service $39.99 no extra fee's.

None the less, I am glad to see Verizon getting a higher speed.

Re: I wish they would compete with Charter

I would hope the "likely bundle discount" would drop this down to the $34.99 ballpark, if you have Verizon local/long distance.

Also, I'm assuming you need to be no more than 11,000 feet from the CO, not at least 11,000 feet

I am hoping they would compete stand alone, I have VOIP now, I think they would get the edge offering speeds like this, stand alone.

At least in those areas that can get either or.

Thanks for your totally informative post. It's not Verizon's fault this is limited to 11,000 feet. That is as far as the technology allows. For god sakes, some of us can't get more then 320/128 (768/128 plan) and pay the same amount as the people on 1500/384. Doesn't bother me, I use my 10,000/1,000 OOL connection and when FIOS becomes available I'll switch to the 15,000/2,000 package.

Yeah, hopefully we won't have a buncha people angry because "DSLR SAID THAT I HAD TO BE AT LEAST 11K AND I'M 25K FEET AWAY AND CAN'T GET IT WAHH"

maybe they wouldn't type in all caps.

Yea, quite a strange technology that works great if over 11K ft, but those people right next door are OOL. Maybe verizon solved the dsl distance problem.

Well, you can reward verizon, the fcc and your local municipalities, get the 3.0/768 then cancel voice service or keep lifeline if they make you, and get voip and take the $200+ back in service charges, taxes and fees. This might encourage them to lower the price of 3.0/768 and don't get the voip with them, they're too expensive.. lingo, and vonage are $19.99 and $29.99 respectively.. until the big guys come down in price- use alternatives or go to IDT for local service... at $40/mo for local & ld copper..novoip you have choices... see what they say when you take your voice service for not being competitive with cable... voip is adding thousands of subs per month and they are quaking, believe me... they don't want to admit it but the money they rake in from ordinary copper dialtone is where they're bottom line is really.. millions of lines that could potentially to voip and to other companies..let's see them operate on 1/10th of their current revenue..hahahaha it's fiber or die for them-- yeah baby!

Just how do you plan on having the Telcos deploy fiber to the home / premise if they don't have any customers? If they don't have customers, they don't have profit. Simply business knowledge tells you no profit = halted deployments of new technology. VoIP sucks, Vonage went down several times this year for hours. My Verizon landline has never went down in almost 15 years. When VoIP becomes more stable I'll switch.

Verizon has been DSL for a rather short amount of time compared to other companies. They are rather reluctant to invest money until they know FOR sure it will make them money (do you blame them?). It's possible that is why they took awhile to do the 3M.

The reason it is west only is because the Legal dept. in Verizon said, "If you can not offer it to everyone, then no one can get it". There are still CO's that are Frame Relay and Frame can't get 3M.

Verizon is working on correcting that problem. Everyone in the east can get it as long as your distance qualifies.

HAha not worth it...that's nearly 50 dollars including the stupid ad on fees. I don't think I should pay an extra 200 dollars a year for something they could give me for nearly free. They started what they can't finish. Matter of fact for the same price the cable companies are offering much faster speeds. Verizon is not really a good deal anymore.

If you are in MD, no cable company offers faster speeds than that. Comcast has 256/3.0 and comcast completly smokes them on the upload.

Yup I'm stuck with adelphia as my only other option and they are truly awful. Guess we're back where we started with verizon..overpriced for what you get, slower than the competition. Like when they wanted 50 bucks a month for 768/128 while everyone else was cruising along at faster speeds for the same price. No to mention they should not be able to not include the ad-on fee in the advertising.

Oh crap slap me upside my head, I forgot about adelphia lol. I forgot they still existed, they will probabaly eventually become comcast. But still man 39.99 for that service is a good deal.

Okay:

a) Comcast has 3mbit download, 256kbit upload. for 42.95/mo.

b) Verizon has 3mbit download, 768kbit upload for 39.99/mo (bundled because i have long distance. I could remove the long distance and pay more.) Verizon also has a $2 FUSF fee. This makes verizon the same price as comcast.

Verizon has MSN premium, a bigger mailbox, the best newsgroup service anywhere.

Comcast has...a lame 10 mb mailbox, no newsgroups.

Before you argue that i have to have verizon phone service...if you remove your cable TV from your cable service, your internet will cost you $57.95/mo for 3/256. If i remove my phone service (downgrade to just a 'lifeline') my dsl will cost me 44.95/mo + $7 for the lifeline, + taxes, which brings me to $55/mo.

The logical choice is verizon.

Re: Unable to find it on their website

I'm not sure there is a link to the offer, the lady I was on hold with (making sure I got to the right dept) was saying that she had quite a few calls from people who knew about the speed upgrades, even though it's not posted on Verizon's website as of yet. "they got the info from somewhere else" :D

I placed my order, and yeah it is 11k for the cutoff, and I think $39.95 for 3/768 isn't too bad, unless you're a spoiled OOL junkie

Call 1-888-567-6789 to place the upgrade.

For people who want the peace of mind that they won't be capped, this is an excellent plan for the price. I'd switch if it was available to me. I have OOL right now, even though I have never been capped, I worry about it each time I upload. I upload sometimes a lot, sometimes for 12 hours at full speed. No problems yet, but like I said I never know when it'll happen.

it's about time...

that's some good news, but considering i pay a little more than 5 dollars more for 8mbps/1mbps service. They should pass these speeds onto their lowest tier. Why not get rid of the 1.5 altogether. I guess they aren't really looking to actually have much more DSL customers. Oh well, at least they offer it now. Although I could get that same tier for 29.95 no extra fees.

Hmm.. I just got off the phone with a rep, it'll cost me $71.96/mo with the 20% discount I'm getting because of the phone service i'm also getting from Verizon for my business.

Currently i have 1.5/384 for $47.96, it'll be roughly $25 more for double the speed.

BTW, I qualified with 4600ft. to the CO! bwehehe!!

That's funny...

DSL Extreme is my ISP and Verizon is my last mile carrier and I have been on the 3000/768 package for two or more weeks.

I did have a Verizon tech out to install a "home run" to stabalize my DSL connection and he said that it was funny that DSLX was providing the package and Verizon wasn't.

Screw that. I'm lucky enough to be in GWI territory. I get 3.7/600 for 39.95 with no additional taxes. Verizon isn't too smart. They were going to offer naked dsl, but instead they come out with voicewing voip and tell you you need to either keep your pots line, or save money by switching to cable access and ditching your landline. Great business decision Verizon.

Excellent Service and Price!

Guys this is an excellent service. If you want 3mbit/768kbit of bandwidth at $39.95/month bundled this would be great. Add in the fact that their newsgroups are the BEST of any ISP, their mail servers are excellent and the service is reliable. I'm on OOL, 10mbit/1mbit for $44.95/month. While this is a good deal, the newsgroups are HORRIBLE the mail server has been working good lately, but it used to go down a lot. Add in the fact they just started blocking port 25, so your required to use their mail server (like I said it is known to be unstable). Also the fact if you upload too much you can be capped to 150kbps. I've never been capped, and sometimes I'd upload at 1mbps for 12 hours. But I always worry I will be, you never know when it will happen. This is why I rather have the peace of mind of having my own "dedicated" (not really dedicated, but they allow you to use the bandwidth more liberally) then using a shared cable network.

Too bad I can't get it, I'm over 16,000+ feet from the CO. I can only get the 768/128 plan of which I receive 320/128. Horrible lines for some reason, so I'm stuck with cable for now. Hopefully FIOS (FTTP Fiber to the Premise) will be released within a year and I'll get the 15mbit/2mbit package from Verizon.

Re: Excellent Service and Price!

this may sound like a dumb question, but is this topic announcing that the 3.0/768 is now being offered by VOL? the reason i ask is because i had vzn dsl (1.5/384) for a long time using a different isp in my area. when i read a few weeks ago that vzn was doing the 3.0/768 i decided to leave my old isp to switch to VOL. of course, this involved disconnecting my current dsl service and re-ordering it to use VOL... i inquired why i had to disco the dsl portion of my line since moving to another isp should be completed in a day by remapping the vpi/vci info to VOL's circuits instead of my old ISP. anyways, long story short, i was without internet for 2 weeks and when everything was said and done i was nowing using VOL at 1.5/384 even though all 8 ppl i talked to said my service would be 3.0/768. after raising more hell, i was told that while my dsl line qualified for 3.0/768 (no shit, i had 7.1/768 for about 2 months before decided it was too expensive) VOL didn't offer that 3.0/768 package yet...even though vzn telco and VOL rep's told me they did...and other ISP's (like the one l left) offer it too. yea, so before i spend more time on the phone with them, i'm hoping someone on here can answer my question...thx

(btw, the reason i left my old isp was because they didn't offer unlimited data transfers)

No FTTP in NJ

@da.u

Sorry, it has already been stated in a press conference that NJ is not on the FTTP list for this year due to the regulatory standpoint on unbundling of the network. Until the state utilities commission drops the unbundling stance, VZ won't be doing any FTTP work in NJ.
