CEO: 'Joost is your old man's TV'
(old news - 06:52PM Wednesday Jun 20 2007)
tags: Video · software
Turning heads today is a new video application dubbed VeohTV that does things a little differently from the flood of other services vying for your attention. Currently in limited beta, the software seeks out video all over the web (user and network created alike) and organizes it DVR-style, letting you subscribe to programs and manage everything via remote control.

Business 2.0 explores the project in more detail, and notes how the company, which doesn't think the browser cuts it for video, is trying to create the app to both view and organize video. Last 100 also takes a look, and notes the the company isn't ruling out set-top box ambitions.

You can sign up for a possible beta invite here. A broader beta is expected "later this year."

If all the TV networks continue to put all of their shows online, people will soon be wondering why they need to pay that monthly cable bill at all.
How about because if TV moves to the internet connection, the internet bill will double and triple to be able to handle the infrastructure upgrades to provide all the extra bandwidth needed.

Then the TV Networks are going to have to seriously work on the content!

None of the "PrimeTime" shows are worth a damn!
Everything else have been re-re-re-re ran until it's WAY tired!

I have a few different Online TV programs... meh.

I agree with that. 70% of the shows on primetime are now those mindless, cheap to make, reality shows aimed at the truly brainless masses.

Re: pointless

the mid to late 80's and early 90's had the best shows IMHO I was born in 1984 so people might say other but from what I can remember those were the best years in tv.. Now it's not really worth watching.. I just stick to my History Channel and discovery and news channels.

Well, that era wasn't bad. But honestly, the 70's had some GREAT shows. Some were over the top cheezy, mind you, but I still think The Love Boat/Fantasy Island may have been the best back to back shows.

Starsky and Hutch...SWAT...Battlestar Galactica...Emergency!....MASH...Mary Tyler Moore....Bob Newhart...Fat Albert...What's Happening!!!...Sanford and Son...The Jeffersons...All In The Family...Maude...and all of the 70's Saturday Morning Cartoons and live action shows (i.e. Sid and Marty Kroft). WHAT AN ERA!

Oh my god. This is the first time I've seen anything from you, that I didn't think was pointless, pro-corporate drivel.

Though, I'd say closer to 80%. I have.. 4 shows that I watch. And 3 are now off-season. So, no BSG, Smallville, Heroes, or even SG:Atlantis until later this year/early next year.. and only 2 episodes left of Doctor Who.

But, I already pay for cable. I don't watch anything else, so they make more than enough money off that bit, to make up for my "bandwidth abuse" of those few shows.

I hope the idea of high quality, on-demand internet TV does well, though. Even if I have to queue up a few shows to download before I can watch them, it's still better than having to sit through, say.. a 7 month mid-season break. And yes, I'd even be willing to sit through commercials, in that circumstance.

GOLFnSUN See Profile is usually just saying what no one else has the stomach to say, the hard truth behind the why of something we all think is crap/unjustified.

While he may tend to justify (by which I mean often cite the bujeezus out of it) why the evil corporations are say, strangling kittens, it doesn't mean he's doing it too. He just tells you why and how it's a good idea/business model for the said individual/corporate entity to strangle said kittens.

I usually don't like reading it either, but it usually is what it is. Besides, all points of debate need two sides, and at least what he says is seemingly intelligent, rather than just propagating a flame war.

So be thankful we have more users like that, than simply anon trolls or whoever. I could say the same thing about a handful of users I see frequent DSLR. It's an objective view people...there's always two sides!

And I'm not flaming you AnonShawUser See Profile, since you were really just commenting, just a friendly reply

Oh I don't know. There is a glut of garbage, true. There are some gems though. I like The Office. I know it is a spin off of the classic Brit series but the US version has forged a great path of its own. There is also some pretty good TV on non-network channels like Discovery and the History channel.

Somthing like this would be great for things like viewing of classic boxing matches.

And the picture quality is alot better on TV. I have been trying out Joost....not really impressed so far. Running 12 Mbit download and still about 1/4 of the time, get pixelation and jumpy video.... I hope it improves...

Rules.

These sites are going to be shut down - The regualtions on streaming radio are at a standstill - let alone fricking video streams. Someone from joost should read DSLR and get the feedback - when I do load it (anymore is like 2 weeks apart) I get the retarded errors and wrong videos playing. Woo rah.

When I run Joost, it works ok... they are FINALLY getting a few things that are worth watching now, a few months ago content sucked!

Where do they get the content from? Doing surveys in europe to people who watch US TV?

More Alternatives

More alternatives to Joost would be nice. Competition is usually good, so I hope Veoh TV pulls off something good.

I was impressed with the picture quality of Joost seeing as how I only have a 1Mbit connection, but after about a month of using it there were some new channels, yet the channels I wanted to watch had the same old content (Aqua Teen Hunger Force ). Maybe after a few more services like this pop up and finally get out of the beta stage we'll have plenty of decent legal online TV to watch. At the moment CBS Innertube is still my favorite place to watch online TV (CSI shows).

DemocracyTV

DemocracyTV has been doing this for quite some time. Though it should be noted that I've tried installing it on four PCs and it crashes on all four when it tries to play it. They just released an update a couple days ago and now it works on one of my PCs. I haven't tried it on the others though.
