Company responds to hacker's screenshots
(old news - 12:55PM Friday Apr 20 2007)
tags: business · gaming · security · privacy · software
"There has been no security breach of Steam," says Valve software to 1Up in response to yesterday's report that their broadband game distribution system had been compromised. But:
"The alleged hacker gained access to a third-party site that Valve uses to manage the commercial partners in its Cyber Café program. This Cyber Café billing system is not connected to Steam. We are working with law enforcement agencies on this matter, and encourage anyone with more information to e-mail us at Catch_A_Thief@valvesoftware.com."
The website that hosted the hacker's post is now offline.

This PR response is so by the book, almost as if it's copy/pasted. Only problem is that in it's appeal to those customers seeking retribution for their CC's getting out, it only amuses customers who are more IT oriented or have a bit of intelligence. Reason is because MaddoX is in Russia which should be enough alone, then there is a fact that you have to find him... I am sure Valve guys realize it and in reality this issue went no further then couple jokes at lunch time yesterday.

How come when I read this I think of "SandPebbles" and Steve McQueen and a Coolie trying to say Valve Steam?

regular customers were never at risk since the last 4 digits of the credit card number are the only thing stored on regular accounts....recurring accounts are something different though....

Re: They better hope they aren't telling a lie

But you see, people jump to conclusions and then mass panic ensues. And then the mob mentality kicks and then there is nothing to stop the villagers with their pitch forks and torches.

But, from each article I have read dealing with this issue it is explained that the Cafe application "people" were hacked, not valve itself. Although this Maddox person tries to allude that he has indeed hacked Valve by expressing he has stolen several "free" games. Although my understanding of the article could be flawed.
