U-Verse hits Knoxville, U-Verse VoIP hits Charlotte, Columbia

It doesn't seem like that long ago that we chatted with AT&T about a lack of U-Verse deployment in BellSouth territory. Things on that front went slowly the first year or so after AT&T's BellSouth acquisition in 2006, but things have definitely been speeding up in 2009, with launches in Alabama, Tennessee, Louisiana and elsewhere. Expansion continues this week with U-verse popping up in Knoxville, Tennessee, and U-Verse VoIP expanding into Columbia, South Carolina and Charlotte, North Carolina. According to AT&T earnings released last week, AT&T now serves 1.8 million U-Verse customers nationally, adding 240,000 in the third quarter.

Yawn

In speaking to my ILEC when they rolled out IPTV, they actually said that TV over DSL just wasn't reliable enough and in their trials, had way to many problems so (wait for it) they are running fiber to all new IPTV customers.

When your sole purpose is not to please shareholders, great things can happen.

Re: Yawn

In newer areas, AT&T is running FTTP. But they are also offering the service in areas that have FTTN but copper to the premise in which line lengths are low and conditions are good.

I'm in one of these FTTN areas and U-verse is great. I'm a bit worried about headroom--how they are going to offer more services in the future to customers like me who have copper on the last leg of the signal. But right now, it's a great value for what I pay.

You didn't mention the slow rollout in Louisville that started about a month back. I live just outside of the city and a tech said that AT&T expects to have U-Verse available all throughout Louisville by the end of this year, and that they'll start rolling out to the surrounding cities (and unincorporated areas in the county) next year.

That is an incredibly slow rollout in Louisville. I'm in the city, but it still isn't available here. I seriously doubt anything will be done by the end of the year.

Re: Louisville

So far it is only available to two people out of several dozen I know, and one of them already signed up for it. Both of them are in newer suburbs, as for older suburbs I agree, there probably won't be anything seriously done by the end of the year.

Ahh yes, Matt you are in Jamestown where North State has plex. I hear advertisements on the radio for it here all the time. I wonder when AT&T will start U-Verse here in Greensboro. Though I can honestly say that I am happy with the 6mpbs FastAccess DSL Extreme that I have now. It is too bad that North State cannot run their own fiber optic lines in other parts of the county besides High Point and Jamestown. Of course, from AT&T's point of view they would have to compete with a smaller company with a superior product. Clearly they would not allow this.

AT&T came to my door back in Feb 2009, said they were digging in the lines on our street for uverse, and that it would be orderable in the next 30 to 60 days. Well, it's November 2009 now, still can't order it, even though all the equipment is installed, all the lines are in. Methinks AT&T has run into some problems with the rollout.

Patiently waiting for service here. BellSouth had said we would be up and running by mid summer (2009). So far, nothing. About 1 month past BS they issued a press release that service was available. As of today still waiting. No one that I've talked with has been able to order service. I'm guessing that when my cox service works right that BS are bringing customers online.

Re: Patiently waiting in Smyrna

What are they going to do with customers that are being served by a straight copper loop directly from the CO, as I understand U-VERSE is not available for these customers.
Also wonder when they are going to boot FAST ACCESS which is outdated packages from the old bellsouth.

Are effing kidding me!? Its been 15 months since the announcement that U-Verse has arrived in South Florida and like 3 neighborhoods in the whole county are U-Verse ready. They started airing U-Verse commercials here a few a weeks ago. About that time I happened to be in the AT&T store near me and one of the sale reps was putting up a U-Verse billboard or whatever you call those square sections held on by Velcro on the wall behind the counters. Why are they advertising something only 1 % of their customers can get?LOL

I had my door to door sales rep visit in Oct of last year. They said it would be available in Dec 2008 but as of today still nothing. Obviously these 3rd party sales reps are just out to drum up excitement and to get the word out without any factual knowledge to their claims but still, I live 5 mins from downtown Nashville.

AT&T won't even install DSL service where we live and we live in the dead center of three town that have it which is about 3 miles down the road either direction...i would just be happy with DSL...i guess wild blue will have to do....

It is funny...I live in South Florida, a Former Bellsouth Area...I am still waiting for DSL 3.0 or higher to hit this area I live in. I have DSL 1.5 off of a copper DSLAM, meaning no remote terminal but directly from the CO. When it rains I loose SYNC. U-Verse is nowhere near to even appear in plans for my area. I work for bellsouth, I mean at&t and I see where U-verse is going and where it is not. There are areas where I don't understand why U-Verse is going in and where it is not, i.e. my area. The company knows about my problem with the rain. Everytime it rains, I call the company and complain about the lose of SYNC. All they do is send a DSL "Contractor" and they say its outside...I know its outside...
