Ahead of planned September 2 launch...
03:58PM Thursday Aug 28 2008 by Karl Bode
tags: competition · business · AT&T U-Verse
Ed Gubbins of Telephony Magazine e-mails me to note that AT&T's VDSL and IPTV service U-Verse has arrived in Little Rock, Arkansas. Flyers saying "U-Verse is now available in your neighborhood," are being hung on doorknobs in the heart of the city, according to area-resident Gubbins. AT&T had apparently been targeting the market for a September 2 launch, and an official press release should be forthcoming shortly. Also of note: it looks like AT&T is offering $125 cash back to users in some markets who are willing to switch from cable.

"Special two year price" on broadband

According to the article,

quote:
In addition to this, any new customer who signs up for AT&T broadband by November 15 will receive a special introductory price for the first two years, without having to sign a contract.
Interesting. Wonder how much of a discount they'll be offering?

They didn't push much when I called and ported.... they just let me port my line to TimeWarner. The local stores are promoting $200 and a free month.

Re: "Special two year price" on broadband

Enlighten me. How is Uverse worth a crap? I mean Time Warner who I had before I moved, offered 15/768. Uverse if I recall is only 6/1 or there abouts? It doesn't seem to offer any real competition to cable companies /incumbents in the area. Therefore, who'd switch over to it when better most likely exists?

Re: "Special two year price" on broadband

but... but... but... you can record 4 shows at once on one DVR!!!!*

(saving the Uverse fan boys some trouble)

* - Only 2 HD feeds for your entire house, only 4 total TVs for your entire house, only 1 DVR permitted for your entire house, and no the boxes aren't networked together. Stake your claim to the best TV and tell the family to bugger off.

Re: "Special two year price" on broadband

Hahaha

I don't even have a DVR or TiVO, and don't care if I ever do.

I want
a) Decent priced Internet (3-6Mbps is all I need), no caps or filters
b) Good VoIP

I can use OTA for what I need.

They'll only be able to do it by price. The cablecos are arrogant about overcharging and they really don't care.

Re: "Special two year price" on broadband

=). You keep bringing it up. I'm not obsessed with it. I mentioned it as a FACT. Period. Strange enough, you've mentioned it a bunch of times afterward. To each their own I guess (as saying goes). What you enjoy and what gets you off is none of my business. Glad I could suggest something, though, to make your life a bit happier.

Their top tier is 10/1.5 which is currently better than Time Warner's 10/1 in this area. They also offer a lot more HD channels than TW does.

As typical with AT&T, where they really compete is on price. They're offering huge incentives just to try it out, and throw very sweet deals at you if you threaten to cancel.

Re: "Special two year price" on broadband

I may be trying it out soon... too many recent issues with TW.
They rescheduled their tech on me today (digital tv going pixelated) and didn't call. Combine that with the 8 hour outage on Tuesday, I'm almost ready to jump ship.
I also personally prefer the DirecTv gui to Time Warner's

Re: "Special two year price" on broadband

TW's DVR guide in Valencia is the former Comcast TV Guide software. When Time Warner took over, it mostly stayed the same, just some advertising popped up on the guide in place of a row of channel information. It's functional but REALLY dated.

U-verse's is, IMO, quite a bit nicer, but is a tad on the slow side and still not quite as refined as some of the better DirecTV boxes I've seen. It has some nifty interactive features (traffic, weather, games, yellow pages), but I never use them because they take forever to load. At least AT&T is actively making improvements to it.

After the my first rough week of connectivity, U-verse internet has been solid and fast since. Pings are a little higher but more stable than TW's.

I miss TW's VOIP, though. I don't know what the heck AT&T's hold up is getting U-verse Voice to LA.

Finally!

The real world visits the sticks, some competition at last; may be a bit late though. If they really want to compete then raise the upstream limit and yes, It can be done! I live here and had SDSL until yesterday [Friggin Earthlink, rot in hell and take your outsourced Monkeys with you]. Pump that low tier upstream and something might come out of the pipe.

I imagine they will have to have thicker and newer copper to make the service useful to the general public?

Ah, shouldn't down them for trying, but does seem a bit like closing the gate after the horse has bolted. Did AT&T finally wake from their slumber.....

How about wiring up the rest of Benton, while they're at it? You can live in downtown Benton and not get DSL!

The line quality here sucks, too. At least where I'm at.

Re: How about more BASIC DSL in Little Rock???

My ex lives in Benton and finally got DSL from AT&T a few weeks ago. She lives on Lakeshore drive just off Military...down from the old fire station on the corner. Are you sure it's not available where you're at? If not it's probably coming soon.

Re: How about more BASIC DSL in Little Rock???

I live off of lakeshore on valley forge and I have yet to be able to get DSL out of them. I have been waiting for all this UVERSE to get turned on in the area so I can get away from horizonbroadband and the price gouging that they are giving us. 500k for 50 dollars a month is not kosher in my book but its that or 24.4k dial up.

Ooops I should have said Northshore, not Lakeshore. They live on Northshore right by the lake in between East and West Lakeview. Maybe they started with that side of town first.

I have it here, yeah. However, I have some family that moved a couple of times, being told that it would be available there, then when they get there, told that its not.

My line quality is kinda poor, though... lots of CRC errors, and dropped packets.

Finally!!

Tried ordering it online, gave me an error at the end, so I called and they finished it. He estimated installation in about 2 weeks.
