UK drops out of Sophos list, Israel arrives
(old news - 09:20AM Monday Nov 06 2006)
tags: stats · spam
Sophos has released their quarterly list of the world's most significant contributors of spam, and the United States remains at the top of the list, contributing 21.6%. Sophos's research indicates that the UK has dropped out of this quarter's dirty dozen list, taking 13th position, while Israel has entered for the first time at number 11. While Asia leads all continents as the biggest spam producer, its output has dropped by 6.1% since the second quarter of 2006.

And people say the US isn't a world internet leader

Well, the US still leads in pumping out spam. Maybe we can drop down to the rest of our rankings by exporting our spam operations to all those high speed broadband countries in Asia, like Korea and Japan.

Re: And people say the US isn't a world internet leader

Quoted from the article...

Despite the United State's lead in the country rankings, Asia continues
to be the largest source of relayed spam even though its production level
dropped by 6.1% since Q2 2006. Europe, currently in second position, is
closing the gap by increasing its share of spam production by 4.8% in the last
quarter.

The Q3 breakdown of spam relaying by continent follows:

Asia 34.1%
Europe 31.9%
North America 24.2%
South America 8.3%
Africa 1.0%
Australasia 0.5%

That seems about right, for the spam I receive.

People still get spam?

Seriously people, its time to get off the internet if you don't know common sense email practices.

Though common sense seems to be in decline, i guess it comes to the internet eventually. :P

Re: People still get spam?

I get spam because I'm required to use the webmaster address for my domain. (Required as per RFC, which I tend to follow). This has nothing to do with common sense email practices, I simply get the spam due to my address. I also have an uncle that ended up with a domain that used to belong to a chinese company, and apparently bill@ used to get a ton of spam, and he has to use that address - too many people know it.

While I agree, the majority of spam people get is brought on themselves, I have to wonder about Gmail. I made an account there to use as a temp storage, but then ended up not using it. So about a month later, I remembered I made the account, logged in, and the spam folder had 20 messages in it. Tell me that's not fishy. I never used the address, never gave it to anyone, and it wasn't something you would just guess either.

So that just shows you sometimes you don't have to do anything to get spam.

Re: People still get spam?

I looked at some headers (a friend of mine) once, there were 26 addresses on it - CASmith thru CZSmith. And I have seen the same thing on two of my accounts that use initials and last name. Nothing like a sequential name generator to get full coverage.

MMm that is fishy, I've had a gmail account for a long time now and never had any spam. Maybe they just recycle no longer used ones and you picked it up that used to get spam?

If one would pick a username with a bunch of numbers added to it, then it would be very difficult for a spammer who sends to every combination of letters to guess.

Gmail is great for eliminating most of the spam (it goes to the spam folder, not the inbox). I freely post with my (fake) email address (my username does not follow the above advice) and pick up 50 or more spams a day with maybe one or two making it to the inbox. Gmail makes it easy to report those few as spam.

And those ? You cant blaim the user for getting junk email. Spammers use dictionary attacks to blanket domains with their spew. How can you defend against this with " conman practices"

Wonder what this really means

Since most (about 90%?) of my spam appears to have a non-US address, does this mean that even though we are the largest relayer that most spam comes from elsewhere or that we are the largest spammer and we relay via other countries?

Also, I wonder what the numbers would look like if they went by percentage of computers in a country vice a raw number? This is like saying since group X commits 70% of the murders in a town then they are mostly bad and group Y only commits 30% so they are better. But if you see that group X makes up 90% of the population and group Y makes up 10%, then you get a different picture.

(to work out the numbers in the above example, assume 1000 people and 100 murders performed. Thus group X has 900 people, 70 murderers, for a 7.78% rate, while group Y has 100 people, 30 murderers, for a 30% rate.)

That's why 43% of all percentage based statistics are correct 76% of the time.
