More solutions emerge for smart phone users...

The NY Times profiles the growing trend of using your smartphone as a portable 3G to Wi-Fi router. It looks like the story was inspired by last week's launch of walkinghotspot.com, a $7 monthly service that works on Nokia and HTC phones that have either Symbian or Windows Mobile Professional. Last week also saw the launch of WMWifiRouter, a $30 application from Morose Media that also turns Windows Wi-Fi-enabled smartphones into wireless Internet hubs. Just as dedicated 3G to Wi-Fi routers did when they first emerged, the shift creates increased focus on the monthly (usually 5GB) consumption limits imposed by many carriers.

Not meant for long term use

I've used WMWifiRouter on my XV6800. This might be unique to my model, but it's a battery drainer. The charger can't keep up with the abnormal strain of both radio's churning away.

It's great for short term use though.

I used to use this on my XV6700. Very slick and useful.

Then that is a pretty bad design flaw. A charger that can't put out enough juice to keep the phone running non-stop at it's highest power consumption?

If you're charging by USB then I guess that's understandable. But if it's a car charger or wall outlet charger, that's terrible!

Re: Not meant for long term use

It's not that the charger can't keep up it's the fact the both radios being active create excessive heat which stops the charging process thus, draining the battery rather quickly. If I direct the A/C across my phone when I'm in the car it keeps it cool and the car charger has no problem keeping up.

It does not seem to be related to a drain on the battery but a overheat of the unit.

I use my Sprint Mogul for storm chasing, if I place the unit in front of the A/C vent with the back cover off it will stay cool enough to not stop charging.

We have also found leaving the keyboard open and turning the brightness on the screen down helps.

It sucks, but what it takes to make it work.

Works slick!

I've used it both on my 6700 and 6800, and it does indeed drain the battery quickly. If you tether it or charge it the service will run for hours with no problems. At least it does for me.

I also have an older copy that was not charged for!

Not impressed

I have a pre-commercial version of WMWifiRouter (0.91) on my HTC 6800. Aside from the novelty aspect, it's not really very useful for anything. The battery consumption is insane. I prefer to tether over bluetooth using ICS. I only do this occasionally and have never been billed by my service provider.

Re: Not impressed

I've managed to get 2-3 hours of solid use on my 6800 and version 1.11. I bought the product because I saw its value and convenience.

If you dim the backlight on you ppc to the minimum run the program you can get close to 3 hours of solid usage. When I bought my phone the guy at the store threw in a car charger, well it turns out that the charger he gave me is powerful enough to charge the phone while I’m using it as a wifi router.

BT Tethering is Slower than using the ad-hoc option provided by wmwifirouter.

Re: Not impressed

My HTC Mogul (6800) works great with WMWiFiROuter. Need to update to the release version (using a beta right now). At any rate, the connection is very good, and has beaten out my 3G AT&T card on various occasions. Not that I actually pay full retail for the AT&T card

WMWiFiRouter was worth the $22.50ish I paid for it back during the early adopter special. Since I always have my cell phone and all modern laptops have WiFi...well, you get the picture.

YouTube...

I found out how to do this while on YouTube a month ago. HOwever, with the way cell phone companies charge for data, this is certainly not meant for long term use, or else you get a huge data bill. But it is cool despite the fast drain on the phone's battery.

Re: YouTube...

I've been tethering for over 5 years... I started with a samsung A800 phone tethering 1x then on the PPC6700 now the 6800. I've had the same phone plane for over 5 years.

Re: YouTube...

also most people with smartphones have data plans. for instance with my iphone and AT&T I have unlimited data (most likely capped though) and on my old moto Q from VZW I had the same thing (capped at 5GB a month I think)

Re: 6800

All of these solutions only can create ad hoc connections. It would be nice if one could do a real AP. The article also ignores jokuispot.
