The Los Angeles Times reports that digital music sites are riskier than porn sites for "such PC-damaging problems or annoyances as spyware, adware and spam," according to a recent McAfee study. Nineteen percent of digital music sites that are high on the search engine rankings had such problems, while only nine percent of the adult sites did, perhaps because "the business side of that industry works even without the extra hustling." It’s no surprise that music file-sharing sites take the cake for security risks, with BearShare being the worst of them. If you’re trying to figure out what else is risky to be looking at online, things to stay away from include searches for electronic gadgets, background screen wallpaper and certain celebrities. Another report from McAfee shows a decrease in search results linking to dangerous sites and says that AOL is the least risky of search engines while Yahoo! is the riskiest.

Music sites riskier than porn?

I find this hard to believe. However, I don't frequent either type of site (can't stand music) so I guess I'm not much of one to comment.

It says Music Sites and then lists Bear Share. Isn't Bear Share a P2P app, or am I confused?

I guess they assume people primarily use P2P apps for pirating music and not other illicit activities such as pirating movies or tv shows, or even legal activities like sharing Linux distros.

Linux distros does for P2P what Hitler did for war.

What exactly does Linux do for P2P?

Wow, never thought I would say this but that analogy of Linux to Hitler is actually pretty accurate.

Thank you, at least one pearl did not go to waste. Plus I said Hitler in a thread and did not automatically lose the argument, sweet.

Are you having sport with batterup? There is very little legitimate need or use for massive P2P down/uploads. Linux distros are one of the few exceptions as they are huge public domain files that may be freely shared.

The knee-jerk answer to the question of *why do you need to be able to upload 4 gig files* is *for sharing Linix distros of course*.

Re: Music sites riskier than porn?

I wasn't having sport with you. I thought you were some how saying that Linux = piracy.
What you are saying is that Linux actually utilises Bit Torrent for it's intended purpose. I wish more people/companies looking to distribute would utilise it.

I noticed that also. It makes me wonder just how neutral MacAfee is in conducting this report. I see no mention of non P2P music apps that you can download directly from a website, such as iTunes. They do not make the distinction and they say that people only use P2P clients to download music which we all know is incorrect.

I will dare say you are at most risk getting infected downloading a application form a P2P network than a mp3 file.

Bingo, i'm guessing its another article where the writer either does not understand the topic or dumbs it down for an ignorant audience.

I apologize for guessing, but apparently my work web filter has now decided to block BugMeMot for some reason (classified as "criminal skills"!!!)
argh!

What type of person "can't stand music"?
That statement blew my mind more than the topic at hand.

I'm more intrigued by the choice to highlight music, rather than writing "can't stand porn"

If it weren't for "real" rock 'n roll, I'd agree. He just forgot to add one word:

He can't stand today's noise, um, music.

I too was drawn to that particular comment. I'm hoping he comes back to say that it was in reference to today's stuff because if he honestly can't stand music then frankly I think that is rather depressing.

Re: Music sites riskier than porn?

Nothing much to say about it, any time I was exposed to music as a child it was in a negative context (i.e. being forced to listen or perform at school or at various childhood activities) So now I have a negative association to music in general.

It doesn't generally BOTHER me per se, unless it is too intrusive. I do not ever go seeking it out, but if it is in a movie or something as a background then it doesn't really matter.

To answer the inevitable question about what I do in the car, I listen to AM talk radio.

I drove one of the loudest "Boom Cars" in Northern California for 3 years.
To say that I am burned-out on music is an understatement.

It is possible to not wish to hear music any longer... I can atest to that.

It's it easier to belive. If you want LEGIT music you know you have to pay and we all know which site are those. So if youa re going to any other site then of course it's a risk. the site owner is alreadya criminalfor offering music he does not have the rights to, so why be shock when he also gives you a virus or isntalls spyware.

The porn side of the internet is much more legit than people give it credit for. Porn sites have no qualms about canning affiliates who try to scam or do anything else illegal to get sales.

Search Engines...

quote:
"...AOL is the least risky."
Didn't see that coming.
Granted, I guess they ought to heighten what security they can control considering their typical user base.

A couple of things.
First isn't Google the least risky by warning you a sight may be malicious?

Second, Bear Share installs some very nasty stuff during the initial install and then opens the gate for who knows else to install more garbage. It's not the P2P use that causes problems (unless you download a nasty file later)

of course

It's cause the porn industry knows that they have something you want....what else...porn!

The music industry, on the other hand, HAS to somehow sell all the (#@(%@(% artists that put out music today

This is true.

I am not going to register for the LA time article. Still this is a big problem. I see the problem mostly on fly by night third party lyric and music sites. Usually I get annoying popup wanting me to download from smiley central. I keep I.E. security high and often these sites will have a bar or a window requesting to download and active x control to “enhance the site experience” and instruction how to bypass Internet Explorer’s security settings. My SOP is to search on Google, copy site URL to I.E restricted site list, and then visit site.

Porn vs. Linux Distros?

Hmmm. Have to choose. Have to choose. Porn on one hand, Linux distros on the other. Boy, hard choice to make. What to do, what to do . . .
