RE: Another one bites the dust: Miami-Dade abandons WiFi
Outdoor muni-WiFi seems like a dead duck as a viable technology. The question is: Will Wimax take its place as the next great goal of the "public must have free wireless" crowd(I.E. Muniwireless.com and others).
Re: RE: Another one bites the dust: Miami-Dade abandons WiFi
It's not so much the technology but the way they are selling it. They are trying to sell it as a free alternative to the Sprint/Verizon cards. The city leaders behind this kind of thing think you just pop a wi-fi card in you laptop and then you have free internet access any place you go.
They should drop the AP to PC link and go for the AP to Radio to inside network just the same way that wISPs do. They have a great way to get some good coverage but it's the "last mile" that always ends up being the problem.
