Microsoft Surface: Where's the 4G Wireless?

considering what carriers want to charge for data why WOULD you want it?

I definitely don't. I use WiFi wherever and whenever possible, both on my tablet and smartphone. I have the 3 GB for $30 plan with AT&T, and with WiFi I have never even come close to the 3 Gig limit. I do tether my tablet to my smartphone occasionally, but only when WiFi isn't available.

I see this as an epic failure.

How can you say that before it's even been released? Sacramento is pretty nice actually, at least I like it.

Because he is either an Apple fanboi tor a MS hater or both. I'm actually interested in this and I've never had an interest in a tablet before.

Having Open WiFi Does Not Make You 'Negligent' Under The Law

But it does make you really stupid.

Re: Having Open WiFi Does Not Make You 'Negligent' Under The Law

Not really. It depends on how you set it up.

I have 3 APs running, 2 private and 1 public. The public one goes into a different port on my router and never touches the internal network.

It still makes you dumb.

A) having an open Wi-Fi is inviting people to help you reach your cap even faster.

B) If someone uses your Wi-Fi to download child porn guess who the cops are going to arrest?

A) I have Optimum West.. We have no caps.

B) I'm not that dumb. Everything goes through a Dansguardian filter first on the public AP.

Good for you. I would guess that the vast majority of people with open Wi-Fi are not that smart.

Can 4G challenge FTTH as a business alternative?

Exactly, and the caps are so low you'd hit them in a few hours (or less) on a desktop.

4G is fast, but there is no way it can touch FTTH.

Physical Line > Wireless

True 4th generation wireless services are those that can provide 100mbps upload and download to a moving target, and 1000mbps in and out to a stationary target, consistently, and to all users of the same tower. No current wireless tech we have out now even comes close to this, and with the ITU bending to the will of the carriers, they can literally call any 3G or 2G networks "4G" as long as they can hit 100mbps in one direction(even if no user will ever see those speeds). We do not have true 4G services yet.
