RE: Google, Verizon, others sued over voice mail patent

In addition to Google and Verizon, other defendants in the lawsuit filed by Klausner Technologies are: Cox Communications, LG Electronics, Comverse Technology, Embarq, PhoneFusion, RingCentral, and Grand Central, which was acquired by Google last year.

Klausner Technologies, a private company that holds several voice over IP patents, settled a lawsuit in June with Apple, which offers visual voice mail in its iPhone.

Klausner also settled with AT&T, eBay, which owns Skype, and Comcast, which agreed to a licensing deal as part of its settlement. The company remains in talks with Cablevision Systems, while Sprint Nextel signed a licensing deal and was not sued, Reuters reported.

Previously, Klausner sued and settled with AOL in 2006, and with Vonage last year. Terms of the settlements were not disclosed.
The patents must be pretty good and they must have a good case, because the big guys keep settling.

Maybe Klausner has also been reasonable in their settlement demands.

But it is unusual to see someone beat the big shots consistently in patent complaints.

I think verizon shit the bucket by using the patent as "evidence"

If they were smart they make licensing affordable, cheaper then years of litigation. Then companies bean counters do the math and tell management to cut the check.

Some patent mills try to shoot for the moon and become instant billionaires. They are much more likely to face stiff resistance when they take that route.

their case is likely improved by asking for reasonable amounts of money, vs some of the other firms that as stated in the previous post aim for the moon.

RE: Hackintosh maker vows Apple strike back

Psystar may actually have an anti-trust case against Apple.

»news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-10026···1_3-0-20
Miami-based Psystar, owned by Rudy Pedraza, will sue Apple under two federal laws designed to discourage monopolies and cartels, the Sherman Antitrust Act and the Clayton Antitrust Act, saying Apple's tying of the Mac OS to Apple-labeled hardware is "an anticompetitive restraint of trade," according to attorney Colby Springer of antitrust specialists Carr & Ferrell. Psystar is requesting that the court find Apple's EULA void, and is asking for unspecified damages.

Re: RE: Hackintosh maker vows Apple strike back

I doubt Psystar will win, but I sort of want them to... of course, this is mostly because I am tempted by the Mac OS X in general, but Apple refuses to offer a laptop with a trackpoint, and going to a touchpad would be too much of a step back... (Obviously a wireless mouse is the ultimate ideal, but that doesn't work in a lot of mobile situations)

Re: RE: Hackintosh maker vows Apple strike back

Well, Psystar may win .. But in the end, it comes down to has more money. I think Apple has a bit more cash in hand. On that note, Even if the EULA is void, Apple can still make sure that the OS only works with it's OS.

Psystar is really trying to make money off other people's work. The Hackintosh community has done the driver hacking already. Psystar has just put it into a package.

Re: RE: Hackintosh maker vows Apple strike back

Can they? The problem (yes, even for Apple) is backwards compatibility. They can't update all of their Macs with a security chip and then tell everyone that only new Macs will get Snow Leopard OS X, so all older Mac users (whose Macs don't have the chip) are screwed. Now, they could introduce the chip now, but even Apple would have to wait a few years. (Much like how Snow Leopard is rumored not to work on PowerPC Macs- they've had several years to upgrade to Intel and now they can reasonably drop support)

Russian mobsters try hacking into WVT computer system
By Matt King
August 26, 2008 4:33 PM

WARWICK — Local Internet users are under attack from Russian gangsters.

Really.

A Russian criminal syndicate has been trying to hack into Warwick Valley Telephone’s Internet service for weeks, resulting in several service interruptions and, for some users, the complete destruction of their e-mail accounts.

“For three weeks, on an hourly basis, Russians were trying to hack into our e-mails,” WVT President Duane Albro said Tuesday. “They were successful five times and we had to shut them down.”

It may sound fantastical, but Internet security experts say the

Russian criminal element is constantly attacking companies in an effort to extort them. The idea is to take control of a network and demand payment to give it back.

“For smaller companies it can be especially damaging,” said Don Jackson, director of threat intelligence for SecureWorks in Atlanta.
He said smaller companies, with limited defenses, tend to be more vulnerable.

For now, WVT’s system is safe, but in the process of boosting security, WVT technicians inadvertently erased the contents of some users’ accounts. There was so much data to corral, the company’s backup server couldn’t handle it all.

Albro said about 100 people lost everything over the weekend.

One of them is Warwick town resident Bill King, who says he lost not only his entire inbox, but his address book too.

Among the lost messages were many pertaining to his efforts to sell his house and buy a new one. He said he won’t stay with WVT.
“I try to shop local and this is what I get,” King said. “If they can’t be trusted I’ll go with someone bigger and better and more experienced.”

Albro said customers can protect against e-mail loss by periodically downloading messages to their hard drives. He said the company will offer credits to customers affected by the glitch.

Re: Russian mobsters try hacking into WVT computer system

trust me on this, if it were the russian mob , they would not leave evidence and if they really wanted stuff they'd go down to where they are and get the comps, if its net access, they are smarter then that and can get it via any phone jack at the side of the homes.

this smells like a case of someone got pissed off at the isp and is vengencing themsleves upon them and someone wants to bring heat on the maffia in russia when there is no proof at all.

Voip for cell phones cuts in to cell providers $

Gorilla Mobile and other carriers are allowing cell-phone users to make calls for virtually free using Internet technology.

Instead, Goldman places the international portion of the calls—roughly 100 minutes a month—through a service called Gorilla Mobile that relies on Internet-based technology to route wireless calls virtually toll-free. Goldman, a user of Apple's iPhone, estimates that he saves hundreds of dollars a year with Gorilla's service. He stands to cut wireless bills even more by signing up for another, iCall, that's due for the iPhone in the coming weeks. The service will let him place low-priced calls from WiFi hotspots—bypassing the AT&T network altogether.

VoIP calling is already raising a ruckus in telecommunications, putting pressure on the price of land-line calling and luring subscribers toward upstarts like Vonage (VG) and Comcast (CMCSA) away from incumbents such as AT&T, and Verizon (VZ). Now, the technology threatens to erode sales for mobile-phone service providers too.

ON World estimates that in 2011, mobile VoIP voice services may generate $33.7 billion, up from $516 million in 2006, the most recent year for which the figure is available.

Wireless carriers are expected to generate $700.7 billion in sales of voice services this year, according to consulting firm Ovum. Still, carriers in the fiercely competitive mobile-phone industry will be none too pleased with newcomers snapping up a portion of the almost one-quarter of all wireless minutes now devoted to long-distance and international calls. Insight Research estimates that together, international and long distance will make up 24% of the 1.2 billion wireless minutes used this year.

VoIP technology is likely to make deeper wireless inroads soon. Skype, the eBay (EBAY)-owned service used by more than 338 million people to make free PC-to-PC calls, later this year plans to release a new product called "Skype for your mobile" that will let customers use local wireless minutes to make international calls.
But to use those Voip services, you have to have a data plan on the phone and also not go over the usual 5GB caps involved.. But on international calls, that may still be a cheaper way than paying the cell phone company international call charges.

ESPECIALLY if you're calling another, overseas mobile. They have these "mobile termination charges". Nothing like opening your phone bill to see you made 33 mins worth of calls to New Zealand-- to a person using a mobile--- and you have a $350 bill.

Fun.

they are mad because the overage for going over 5gb is still less then the minutes to another country.
