Universal Landline Service

Such a bill ending universal landline service would not pass in Democrat controlled Massachusetts. The telco workers here are unionized and the unions basically run Massachusetts state government. One Verizon tech told me that Western Massachusetts was supposed to be sold to FairPoint (when Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont were sold) but Massachusetts regulators would not approve such a deal.

I have a landline through Verizon on the PSTN because it is needed for my alarm system to work.

Re: Universal Landline Service

The article's author claims that satellite phone service requires a computer.

I would question its accuracy.

Considering the delay in satellite broadband I would think it would be useless for telephone service.

Re: Universal Landline Service

VoIP as far as I know wont work on satellite internet, unless they were referring to a satellite phone its self that wall pretty much work anywere. As far as this article goes it is pretty much old news. The bill already passed through the Ohio senate last month and is now headded to the house. And yes AT&T is pushing really hard to get it through.

Satellite phone service works just fine.

This digusts me.

Not only should the greedy bastards not be able to repeal universal landline phone service, they should be required to provide universal landline internet service as well. Any politician that would vote in favor of one of these bills has instantly outed themselves as bought and paid for. Getting rid of universal landline benefits absolutely no one except the companies themselves save for the politicians who get money from these companies for their votes.

"theft of internet service" article was unintelligible

Was the writer speaking of cable modem cloning or wifi hacking? I couldn't tell.

Alternate To Removing Universal Landline

Remove the price controls on landline service. Allow providers to offer the service at a price that covers the cost of maintenance and ensures that they make money.

And get rid of the USF at the same time! That is supposed to cover those costs and the big telco's are stuffing it in there pockets!

Potential Customer: Hi, I'd like to get landline service.

AT&T: Sure thing! Can you please tell me where you're located?

Potential Customer: I'm about 5 miles outside of town. Will that be a problem?

AT&T: Not at all!

Potential Customer: Great, how much will basic service cost?

AT&T: Let's see... OK, basic phone service will be $79.95 a month, before taxes and fees of course.

Potential Customer: $80?!!

AT&T: Yes. I'm afraid that because you live in such a remote area we just can't provide basic service for less than that.

Potential Customer: I'll still get unlimited nation-wide calling, caller ID and such, right?

AT&T: No, sorry. If you unlimited nation-wide calling and caller ID, you'll need to take our plus package, which will be an addition $39.95 a month, before taxes and fees.

Potential Customer: So my monthly bill would be $120 a month for landline phone service?

AT&T: Yes, although once you add on the taxes and other fees, it'll probably be closer to $135...
