| Pirate Bay Lives OnThis is becoming very funny. It reminds me of Wack A Mole!
They own their class C and can move it wherever they want. Moscow next? Beijing? They are rapidly becoming cult heroes!

I don't even uise the pirate bay, and I get a kick on how it keeps going and going. It's too funny. The only think that irks me is that when I'm buying movies/music it goes towards these future enforcement. I'd rather they charge me less for my products, and give up on this, and give up on DRM.

Equipment I installed myself provides wifi(with WPA2, so don't get any ideas) in and around the vehicle. What if Sony next decides to yank a feature you like? Then have the audacity to make firmware updates for mods that only attempt to get back the feature they stole. Die Sony! You're the reason I purchased an XBOX 360. At first, I was happy with my ps3. Consumers need to stop letting companies walk all over them. I am proud to say I purchase not even a blank CD from Sony these days. -- The new Sony rootkit-Using the ability to remove features you paid for. What's next? Xbox deals with their piracy as well (modified dvd firmware and jtag, can result in BAN from xbox live).
I'm guessing someone will figure out how to launch games (when the new ones come out, its inevilitble that they will require new firmware versions) without the firmware requirment. It could be tricky to get people on PSN, but thats still big for anyone that doesn't do online gaming.
The cats out of the bag, now that there's a hole, its going to be use and abused. The OtherOS feature on the ps3 was pretty useless, as you didn't get full access to the GPU or cell processors (which made for shitty HD video support). Hopefully someone ports XMBC to the ps3, this hack will give full acess to the ps3's GPU and power.

As to your first statements, I have no problem with a company taking steps against piracy. It's part of that business model and protecting profits to a reasonable degree. I do have a problem with a company removing an advertised feature that made some peoples' decision to buy that console over another console-all for a hack that might have eventually allowed someone to get a bit deeper into the hypervisor. Mind you, that hack is was nowhere near running pirated games. If anything, it might have eventually given Linux programs access to the GPU, but probably not until the ps3's market was past prime. This was a very tiny crack in the outer shell of the armor. XBOX 360 piracy is already a reality. You see MS banning pirates, but not punishing legit users, as well. That is, at least in terms of their consoles. As to Windows, check my posting tag -- The new Sony rootkit-Using the ability to remove features you paid for. What's next? Seems like simple fraud to me. Piss on sony.
No matter though, they shall remain jail broken as they have pissed off the most talented computer community in the world. Go linux nerds.
Backups are now reportedly working with the USB dongles. ( not sure if they are for sale yet as per the firmware upgrade thing might be a real bummer »www.engadget.com/2010/08/19/ps3-···out-inv/)
Sony meet the Streisand effect.

| | | KearnstdElf WizardPremium join:2002-01-22 Mullica Hill, NJ | Re: PS3 firmware update could kill jailbreak the Streisand Effect is one of the greatest pluses to the internet. any attempts to squelch information only cause it to multiply. best 21st century example is that HD-DVD code, that once the owners tried to get it hidden again it appeared everywhere. -- [65 Arcanist]Filan(High Elf) Zone: Broadband Reports | |

But honestly they should have allowed Linux full processing access to the PS3 and not nuked the support for it. if they allowed full access people could have written some interesting Linux software for it. I imagine that things like Blender could have some nice rendering times on the Cell CPU.(though the PS3 is lacking in RAM for that). -- [65 Arcanist]Filan(High Elf) Zone: Broadband Reports
|
| | SeleniaI love DebianPremium join:2006-09-22 Lanesboro, MA kudos:2 | Re: PS3 firmware update could kill jailbreak Still though, I can imagine a specialized blender distro that only loads libs relevant for production and rendering under blender, with almost no overhead. It being a ps3 would eliminate the necessity for the code to support multiple chipsets and cpu/gpu platforms. The potential in that would be incredible as you would be surprised what 256MB could do in such optimized circumstances. To Sony's credit, a few of their own games have given us a bit of a taste. -- The new Sony rootkit-Using the ability to remove features you paid for. What's next?
