VC cash infusion and acquisitions expand the company's opportunities

Truphone is a small mobile VoIP company that was able to start growing after it received nearly $25 million from VC investors in its Series A funding round. The company can now make a real impact on the industry after a Series B round of funding garnered it an additional $32 million dollars. This news follows the company’s recent acquisition of Sim4Travel which “completes its GSM core network”. It also lets Truphone’s service move to more handsets than were previously possible and allows the company to truly compete in the global marketplace. Headquartered in London, Truphone has a small base of American users that is likely to get bigger as a result of these recent changes and investments.

Whats the point?

I dont really see the point here. As I understand it, they used to offer a Nokia VoIP client. Now, they bought a company that sells pre-paid SIM cards. Hmmmm, so now the point is you can use a SIM card or a wifi hotspot and have the same number?? Its not like the wifi calls are free (they are the same cost as a SIM call), so why not just use a SIM card to begin with? In all honesty I cant remember the last time (or if it ever happened at all!) that I was in an area with no GSM service, yet somehow had wifi service. I suppose one could theoretically encounter this situation is a sub basement, but in that case just wait to use the phone until you get outside! Overall I think the global market for something like this is extremely small and limited.

It is a Good Move for Truphone

Remember that Truphone is currently in litigation with TMobile UK over termination rates. TMobile claims it doesn't have to pay mobile termination rates to Truphone because its product is not a mobile service.

Truphone currently offers free call forwarding to UK mobiles when you are off net. Now they can keep more of that money in house, cut off TMobile's legal arguments, and position themselves as a great roaming SIM for Brits (their primary market).
