Company issues surveys for new tier names, prices
06:28PM Wednesday Aug 05 2009 by Karl Bode

We already knew that a Time Warner Cable launch of DOCSIS 3.0 services in New York City was close, and that NYC is the only market that's going to see the faster speeds this year. Insiders at Cisco working with the company have told us DOCSIS 3.0 gear has been installed in NYC for testing for months, and company COO Landel Hobbs recently confirmed NYC upgrades would be done by the year's end.

A poster in our forums notes the company is using surveys to figure out what they should name the new tiers, and how much to charge. "I get paid money for taking the surveys," says the user, who apparently didn't sign a non-disclosure form -- or possible doesn't care even if he did.

"It was a $2.50 payment for that particular survey, and it was about new speed tier and names like Roadrunner Flash, Roadrunner Extreme, Roadrunner Lightning, and a couple others that I forgot for the new title."

Hopefully "Extreme" didn't win, as that particular marketing-ism is getting a little long in the tooth for 2009, abused and used to death by a half-dozen broadband provider marketing departments, including Adelphia, DSLExtreme (of course), Cox, Comcast, and others. And that's just the broadband industry. It has become sort of a disease, and as a marketing meme it just doesn't work anymore.

Even Time Warner Cable already offers "extreme" tiers, which began as capped tiers that the company was offering in only select markets circa 2003, long before Time Warner Cable's latest capping fiasco. We're not sure if Time Warner Cable is listening, but please put us down for anything other than extreme. It's very 1997 Mountain Dew, and contrary to what some marketing execs apparently think, it doesn't say "edgy," it says "really, really corny."

On the more important subject of pricing, the obvious question is whether TWC's again going to try to impose low caps and high per-gigabyte overages on their customers, something that didn't go very well last time. There's still no sign of the promised bandwidth consumption meter the carrier said they'd use to "educate" consumers on usage, though it still seems likely a renewed effort will be made this fall to impose overages. We asked the company if faster speeds were any closer, and were told they're getting "closer every day" and to "stay tuned."

I did a triple-take over this past weekend while doing some routine maintenance on my father-in-law's computer. His ISP is Time Warner Central NY Road Runner, based out of Syracuse, NY.

Speedtest.net reported his connection at 20mbps/1. I couldn't believe it but there it was.

Re: Extreme exist already..

Tier 3 will tell you to find out the correct speed of RoadRunner you need to do 3 speedtests. Especially if you have PowerBoost. They have a RoadRunner Speedtest site of their own for each region. Check with Tier 3 for the web site.

Yep, I did run at least three speed tests because I absolutely didn't believe the first one.

I'll check out other sites to see what they show next time I stop over to his house.

Re: Extreme exist already..

I used to get over 30mb down at Speakeasy on Roadrunner when I lived in Nedrow, before I moved to a real area and got FiOS. It's fake, because it's that speedboost crap. I've got the 25/15(25) FiOS now and it's definitely faster than that fake TW speedboost

Re: Extreme exist already..

fake? LMAO!

And what is FiOS gonna be when it starts reaching problems? PowerBoost requires three speedtests before reaching the actual speed.

But at least their speedtest is OFF their network and NOT on it like VZ's. OOPS! Did i forget to mention that if you have cable Internet VZ's speedtests are FLAT OUT BOGUS!??!?!

And by the way? VZ didn't start building out FiOS until they were promised they didn't have to share it. only later to cherry pick the areas they want to offer it in. Cable is years ahead of VZ and can out build them any time they wish. Remember VZ HAS to rewire every street and city for FiOS. Cable doesn't as it only has to finish the last ~500 feet with it. Now who's ahead. And as far as speed? Cablevision is turely ahead of VZ and their so called Internet.

Proving once again that Denial is not just a river in Egypt...

The chances of FiOS "reaching problems" are minuscule compared to what happens when cable runs into the very real limitations of their RF distribution plant.

It's called being "future proof", and your cable is 1970's tech.

Dear TWC Marketing Dept.

I have some suggestions for tier names:

Crawl - the basic tier consists of a 5 gig cap and less than dial up.
$25.00/mo.
Chug - 8 gig cap/less than dial up speed - $35.99/mo.
Limp - 11 gig cap/still less than dial up - $39.99/mo.
Waddle - 15 gig cap/9600 k/bps dial up speed - $44.99/mo.
Strut - 20 gig cap/14400 k/bps dial up - $49.95/mo.

Sprint - 30 gigs/1 mbps - $55.99/mo.
Dash - 37 gigs/1.2 mbps - $58.99/mo.
The Olympic Athlete - you get a GARGANTUAN 50 gig cap, a BLAZING fast 5 mbps all for the low low price of $250.00/mo.!!!

You can assign your own speed tier to each name. They'll all crap out after they hit the cap in 10 days anyway, when they each turn into Roadrunner Coyote.

Very very good and funny post I thought. Here where I live, TWC's fastest turbo tier is suppose to be 15Mbit/2Mbit. Yet on the upstream side of things, the best upload I could get was 1.3Mbit, instead of 1.8-1.9 that I should've gotten. My signal levels were good, I verified multiple times that my modem was configured for 15/2, yet it seemed as though I was only getting about 1.5Mbps of upload.
I took my modem to a friend's house who feeds off of a different head end, and wouldn't you know it, I was able to achieve the full 2mbps of upstream speed at his place, meaning the modem was plenty capable of achieving those speeds. Yet back at my place, with the exact same equipment and configuration, I never have been able to break the 1.5Mbps barrier, even at 3 aM! So yeah those tiers would be very appropriate for TWC I think.

Heh, biz tiers are as follows:

10/512 - $100
10/1 - $150
10/1.5 - $180 (I think, might be $200)
15/2 - $250

That's with a 3-year contract. Each year off the contract is $10 more onto the price...and I think that's the rate for all of Texas. In the Carolinas area the speeds and prices are even more absurd:

5x384 - $80
5x768 - $130
5x1.5 - $160
2x2 - $196 (no, I'm not kidding)
7x2 - $350 (not kidding here either)
10x2 - $425 (or here)

What's even more interesting is the special "Teleworker" tiers TWC has in NC. 5x384 for $40-$50 depending on how many people sign up from your company, 7x1 for $85-$100. I guess the high pricing on the 7x1 tier is because no residential tier in the region has more than 512k up, and Embarq tops out at 896k. And I'll bet TWC isn't going to put caps on these connections, or at least once can hope they won't.

As everyone knows, TWC's offerings vary VASTLY depending on the area you're in. In NC 10x512 residential is $60 per month. Here 15x2 is $50 per month. There 7x384 is $50 per month. Here 7x512 is $40. There 1.5x256 is $35 per month. Here 5x384 (or is it 3x384? Their info site conflicts with their ordering site) is $35. There Wilson, NC decided to put fiber in. Here, select areas have FiOS...bleh.

Re: Dear TWC Marketing Dept.

We (my employer) pays 99.50 a month for 2/15 with static IP address and Ambit modem.

That's not too bad since its uncapped and they kicked a few turbo subcribers off our node to boost the signal to my building.

I wish i could get 2/15 at home though - stuck on the 1/15...which acts like 1/10 plan for 34.95.

I don't believe there is a way to tell what your node/CMTS is using or what it is capable of, but the easiest way to tell what your modem is using is to check it's status page. It should tell you what it is using.

DDWRT, 2 Linksys WRT54G in client mode and 2 high gain antennas and you can get 1-2 Mbits at around 2100 feet. We use similar for our guardshack. Capital outlay less that $200.

I thought they were moving away from "Extreme"

In Los Angeles we used to have Road Runner "Extreme", but it was renamed to Turbo last year.

I find AT&T's names funnier. They keep adding new tiers but they sort of painted themselves into a corner when they named their fastest speed "Max". You can't get maxer than max, so now we have "Pro", "Elite", "Max" and "Max 18" and possibly "Max 24".

Ultra?

TWC doesn't have an Ultra tier yet. That's the easiest cop-out; OOL uses it. Or does AT&T use it for one of their lower tiers?

Now if they really wanted to be an abomination they could talk with Dodge and co-brand "Hemi" on their new 30/5 tier.

Or just call it MACH 5, for 5 Mbps up .

Speaking of 5 Mbps, it appears as though that's *just* out of range for U-Verse's new profile (U12, 5 up, 32 down I think, with some of that 5 Mbps reserved for U-Voice and TV return path). Coincidence? I think not.
