The Borderlands Sciences Foundation guys built and tested a so-called longitudinal waves transmitter / receiver pair back in the eighties and they tested the radio communication with it. The cool part is when they immersed receiver antenna in the ocean water (a depth of a few inches) and still could hear the transmitted tone. Fast-forward to the end of the video for this part.
