Though it won't be winning any data rate races...

Wireless communication underwater is difficult because water molecules absorb radio waves very efficiently, but a new technique that involves playing garbled acoustic messages backwards could improve wireless communications beneath the waves, according to New Scientist. Broadband powerhouse it isn't: current tests of the system allow them to send data at 15kbps at a range of 4 kilometers, and 5 kilobits per second at 20 km. At 3,500 km the data rate falls to about 100 bits per second.

From the article, Conventional underwater acoustic modems achieve reliable rates of just a few kilobits per second across 5 km in shallow water. it clearly appears that not only is 'Time Reversal' a substantial improvement in both throughput and range but also quite innovative.

doesnt take much bandwidth to tell a sub to NUKEM! yea i know that isnt the use of this though as we use VLF for that.

Tesla technology.

The Borderlands Sciences Foundation guys built and tested a so-called longitudinal waves transmitter / receiver pair back in the eighties and they tested the radio communication with it. The cool part is when they immersed receiver antenna in the ocean water (a depth of a few inches) and still could hear the transmitted tone.
Fast-forward to the end of the video for this part.

Only if it was originally Satanic. I think the reversed message is sent back, with an added new message, so the software has a baseline to start interpreting the reply.

Re: But...but...

well first you have to set your Baseline Evil settings, then properly configure your SNIC(Satanic network interface card, with Evil Drivers v6.6.6)...

Fascinating Article

Raises some Interesting possibilities.

Since I live on the ocean, I would be interested to see whether or not this technology can be used to provide internet access at a marina. No-Wireing needed -- just drop the "thingy" over the side, and your online.

Re: Fascinating Article

you do realize the max speed of this is less than 1/3 of dial-up.

Sure, but for boaters, sending email is a luxury.

Wow with this technology

A politician can speak out of his ass and it will be heard miles away underwater, oh these modern wonders.
